herbst··on One Phone. One Computer
I mean you can do that with any android and a installed Linux distro. It was also more or less the exact vision of the Ubuntu phone but people didn't care a lot.
herbst··on Maintainer rejected AI contributions, we forked it and added video acceleration
The comments on twitter are weird as well ..

I mean the real issue I see is as maintainer I wouldn't want to open the door to that because I don't want to read through thousands of lines of AI generated code in future just to seed out the good one.

herbst··on Can we stop with the uptime percentages?
Fast is future. Slow is ded. We are fast now
herbst··on Ask HN: AI Panic, you buying it?
From my perspective it looks like working to deep in AI makes you crazy. No other way to explain all the weird bullshit these billionaires throw around.

Sure AI sucks, but not to that degree (yet)

herbst··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Even that only makes sense if endless consumption is a given good thing.

If I need something I usually have a need first, then I research then I buy. It's never the thing in the ads in between that turns out to be best.

herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I am sure you aren't wrong. But in the exact 2 cities I was thinking about the non roundabout one definitely has the "better" public transit and definitely more people using it daily. (Salzburg AT Vs Thun CH)

Thun has just a really good street system and city layout generally I guess.

herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
I mean sure I also hate that as a biker, however it's the one thing that keeps my mind from drifting off so I guess it's necessary.
herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
In fact it's illegal to take more than 3 rounds in Switzerland.
herbst··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
If you have weapons and a child. And you have that child unsupervised do their own thing with theoretical access to your weapons. Would we call it "child going rouge" if it decides to play with the weapons and shoot someone?
herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
Some roundabouts here have bike pass troughs on the side (obviously only works if there is no turn to that side) for speedy drivers like you.

Other than that it's obviously by design. There is no reason to speed at constant 50kph in a city. Nether for a car, motorbike or e-bike.

herbst··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
The city I grew up in had no roundabouts back then. Today it does have some, some were even made and removed again since. People there hate roundabouts.

The city I live nearby now has so many roundabouts that I can drive for over an hour without seeing a traffic light. It always had those, people are used to using them.

Guess what works better and barely has any traffic issues at all.

herbst··on AI models don't kill people – people kill people
Where can I sign up for compensation for the constant "ddos" from openai?

It can't be just me, half the internet needs beefier servers I guess. That all just plays into cloudflare as well (which barely does anything for some reason).

herbst··on Your car is selling your data
I really wanted a modern car because of the fancy automation stuff, I thought.

But it never is economical or more environmental friendly.

Whatever I saved on my old car compared to a newer one will never be less than the theoretical fuel savings on a newer car. Repair costs will never be as much (assuming you buy a popular repair friendly car). And nothing new needs to be built for me either.

herbst··on Eating Fruit Skins
Organic doesn’t mean pesticide-free or non-toxic. Organic farming can use pesticides such as copper compounds, pyrethrins and spinosad, all of which have their own toxicity and environmental risks
herbst··on Eating Fruit Skins
If you don't know your bananas are free from pesticide and fungicides make sure to dispose them in the trash. It's not even recommended to compost banana because it's so full of toxins.
herbst··on Eating Fruit Skins
When I stopped smoking strawberry leafs where one recommended component of tobacco replacement. It does smoke well, and also makes a great component to tea. Never eaten it fresh tho.
herbst··on Eating Fruit Skins
Washing pesticides off with water. Like whenever it rains the farmer needs to spray again because water is enough to get rid of it.. exactly
herbst··on Eating Fruit Skins
My exact thoughts reading trough this thread. Where are people even getting their bananas from if they feel comfortable eating the skin? I don't even compost them because I don't want all that toxic shit in my garden.
herbst··on Eating Fruit Skins
You do that to get the starch out and get a better result don't you? That's what I rinse my rise for at least
herbst··on Do You Report Litter?
I rather mean it's so common that I doubt they want me to report all the weird, remote and hidden places I find when the problem is so much bigger and obvious everywhere else.
herbst··on Will there be a 7G?
> If I see anyG on my phone anywhere that isn't a city in Germany and know I can put it away again if it's not some kind of an emergency because it's basically unusable

Ftfy

herbst··on Do You Report Litter?
That's sad to hear, i remember the Netherlands (except Amsterdam) as one of the few other generally clean places on this planet.
herbst··on Do You Report Litter?
Where i am from litter is very rare and when it gets cleaned up usually next day. However when I travel in Italy or Spain litter is like everywhere. Especially in Spain, the more nature is around you the more likely you are near a illegal littering place from someone.

Not sure if I as a tourist am supposed to report it, or just ignore it and move on.

herbst··on How to buy a good car for $1000
The tire alone is about $300, about $200 in work and $100 or so was a break replacement.
herbst··on How to buy a good car for $1000
I live in Switzerland tho. But might be true, it's "big" because of mountains and because I actually use it to commute and travel on the autobahn which is no fun if you are slower than anyone else. Most people here have 500-800cc
herbst··on How to buy a good car for $1000
Wheel cost alone was about $300 for both, rest is work time and new breaks.
herbst··on How to buy a good car for $1000
My honda NC750 at 10 years old cost me $4200. I had to replace wheels once (rubber, $600) and the transmission failed on me ($850) all within my first 8k kilometers.

My last car was a Subaru forester that did cost a little less, was older tho, on that I spent about $800 in total per year on to keep it alive, easily doing 20k kilometres a year.

Motorcycles arent so much cheaper necessarily.

herbst··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
A lot of code for Esp devices, Arduino clones and other embed computers is open source coming straight of china. This was also the case 15 years ago.
herbst··on Dating Apps Are Dying
Yes. Everyone says things like "go there, you'll meet people" and the reality is, yes you might meet people but on a very different level than you did 10 years ago.

I am mid 30 (so not that old) but the reality in dating does make me feel very old right now.

herbst··on Dating Apps Are Dying
That's the weird paradox. Never have been so many people been alone, never have so many people lived alone. And yet it seems so hard to connect.

I mean sure living in Switzerland doesn't make that more easy for sure, but the general issue doesn't seem to be a local one.
