henryaj··on On Really Trying (2009)
Mania is a hell of a performance enhancer.
henryaj··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Just baffles me when people are like "well no-one's died yet". How long until some mission-critical system is compromised, or hackers use LLMs to ransom a hospital chain?
henryaj··on I resigned from Anthropic today
Hugging Face incident, Anthropic reporting sandbox escape, AISI reporting models trying to push exploits to the wild
henryaj··on I resigned from Anthropic today
The HN crowd has a notable anti-AI bias - so it doesn’t surprise me

What evidence do you have for any of this?
henryaj··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
> If we trust 1Password with our data, we are trusting a company with those views inside it with our data.

Is this really true? Your data is presumably encrypted at rest on their servers; you're not "trusting" them with it any more than you're trusting S3 when you send encrypted blobs to it. The political alignment of Jeff Bezos doesn't really come into it.

You're certainly supporting them with your money - that seems like the real objection here.

henryaj··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
> In the UK there's severe limitations on freedom of speech

Sure, but those are just as controversial here as in the US, in a way that ANPR is a non-issue.

henryaj··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
Any idea why this is so much less acceptable to people in the US than in the UK? In the UK we've had ANPR for more than twenty years and AFAICT there's no mass controversy surrounding it. It catches people with no licence, no insurance, who are wanted in various serious crimes. I'm surprised at the difference in attitude.

(I am aware that the UK has a less-than-stellar privacy track record... but nonetheless it's curious that for this particular technology, as opposed to the Online Safety Act, there's such a difference.)

henryaj··on Stealing Reasoning Traces from Proprietary LLM APIs
I assume it does happen at a different layer, just that that layer is common to all of a provider's models to make conversations portable across models (otherwise the reasoning blocks would all need to be re-encrypted for them work with another model)
henryaj··on London’s most equidistant pub
I enjoyed many a pint in that pub during my student days at UCL!
henryaj··on My falling-out with the rationalist community
> This is my problem with the classical Consequentialism or Utilitarianism, they always discount emotions. I'm sorry, does emotion exists or not? Is it real? Then it should be brought into discussion

This is not true of rationalists! "Straw Vulcan" as a failure mode was talked about fifteen years ago - https://www.lesswrong.com/w/straw-vulcan

henryaj··on My falling-out with the rationalist community
Damore wasn't a rationalist but his memo was at least somewhat reasonable, and didn't merit him being cancelled.

> From this, you could argue it’s OK to work for an unethical company if it maximizes your earning potential — and thus, saves more lives through the donations you make. And finally, the harms caused today could be offset by the benefits to generations yet unborn

Do people do this in practice? 80K for example (EA not rat, but EA is the policy arm of rationalism after all) expressly warn against this. Feels like a strawman.

The 'return' in these cases is social return, not profit.

henryaj··on Show HN: Flock – Share your daily todos with friends for accountability
Show HN:

I built Flock because I kept failing at productivity in isolation. Flock is simple: you see your todos alongside your friends' todos in real-time. Creates gentle social pressure to follow through.

- Real-time dashboard showing your friends' progress alongside yours - Vim-style keyboard shortcuts (j/k, space to complete) for power users - Built-in pomodoro timer - Goal tracking to organize todos by area of focus - Beeminder integration for quantified-self types - Works with Claude via MCP — ask Claude what's on your list, add todos by voice - Dark mode, command palette (⌘K), drag-and-drop reordering

I've been using it daily with a small group of friends for months and the effect on my follow-through has been significant.

I absolutely hated doing Cyber Essentials (Plus). Huge waste of time
henryaj··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
https://www.flockwith.me

I'm building Flock, a social goal tracking and intentions app. Styled a little around Complice/Intend, but with more of a focus on working in public with your friends and colleagues - see what they're working on, track your intentions against specific goals.

Building out reviews now - so you can systematically review your progress against your goals to stay on track. Give it a try, and add me as a friend! https://www.flockwith.me/u/henryaj

henryaj··on Ryanair flight landed at Manchester airport with six minutes of fuel left
Certainly banned enough that you can't listen to ATC playback anywhere online. I think in practice you can use an air band radio at home (not sure how anyone would know if you were anyway).
henryaj··on The untold impact of cancellation
High Court notice from the mentioned court case: https://pretty.direct/consentorder.pdf

> The Defendants accept that they have never had any evidence to support the allegations apart from the two unverified claims published in coordination with the Open Letter. They were never in a position to make any informed judgement on the truth of the allegations, and did not seek clarification on any of the allegations from the Claimant.

He won £5,000 plus costs.

[edit - the defendants here appear to be signatories of the open letter]

henryaj··on The untold impact of cancellation
It's interesting looking at the messages of recent commits of people removing their names:

- Upon reflection, I don't think this letter was the right approach for this situation. Although I cannot retract my initial decision to sign it, I would appreciate having my signature removed from the document.

- We had good intentions and reasons for concern, but there was no due process, and the consequences of that can be awful. Please accept my withdrawal.

- The goal of providing safe spaces is laudable and necessary, but I expected to see further process outcomes from this effort. Perhaps some sort of SIP or scalarum iustitiae processus.

- I no longer believe the way this letter was the right way of dealing with the situation. And while I cannot undo signing it, I would like to request removing my signature.

Also the working on PRs workflow seems broken - the local branch doesn't have the changes that are on the PR so I can't pick it up and continue working on it.

Agreed that worktrees seem clearly better.

henryaj··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
> Fake meat isn't really a product for vegetarians/vegans

This is just flat-out wrong.

henryaj··on Beyond Meat fights for survival
Why do you fucking think? Because it's tasty. You can disagree with the ethics of how we make animals suffer because they taste nice and still think they taste nice.
henryaj··on I built something that changed my friend group's social fabric
WhatsApp has a somewhat similar feature - pull up to start a group voice chat. You can ping others to let them know you're around.

henryaj··on Electron band structure in germanium, my ass (2001)
I had a very similar experience during a lab internship I took during my biochemistry undergrad degree.

First part of a project was running PCR on a particular plasmid that we were going to use to transfer a gene into Drosophila. But for some reason the PCR didn't work, and I spent almost all of my time trying to get the damn thing to run.

Everyone naturally assumed I was just doing something wrong, being an undergrad with little lab experience. After about ten weeks, it turned out that the lab tech had written up the protocol wrong and I was using the wrong primers. No wonder it didn't work.

Was one of the experiences that made me realise that working in a lab really wasn't for me...
