helterskelter··on I didn't realize my LG TV was spying on me until I turned off Live Plus
I believe HDMI has support for sharing internet since 1.4 and I wouldn't be surprised to see TV makers attempting to leverage this in the future to get around not connecting your TV directly to internet.
helterskelter··on I program on the subway
I do my best thinking on the bus.
helterskelter··on Show HN: Jmail – Google Suite for Epstein files
Yeah but a few words from somebody like Ghislaine could completely fuck shit up for a lot of people.

Of course, she'll have hanged herself shortly afterward while the security cameras were malfunctioning.

helterskelter··on Inca Stone Masonry
> the use of rope or string, sand, and water to finely cut stones and gems

I haven't heard this one before, that's a great idea. Here's a YouTube video of somebody doing this with jade if anybody is curious:

helterskelter··on 'It's surreal': How US sanctions lock ICC judges out of daily life
The US wielding the sanctions banhammer the way they have been recently will only weaken its power over time and create opportunity for economic rivals like China. Every time they (mis)use it they create incentive for people to create alternatives to the US financial system. You won't see sanctions become completely completely toothless overnight, but I could see in maybe 15-20 years that getting around US sanctions will be a mere inconvenience.
helterskelter··on Show HN: I Ching simulator with accurate Yarrow Stalk probabilities
Very cool, thanks for the response. Neat project btw.
helterskelter··on Umbrel – Personal Cloud
I'd really love to see an off the shelf distributed FS server in a NUC form factor that you plug in and is largely self-managed. Automatic atomic updates, QR codes to add a server to your swarm, manage it through a browser, client side encryption so a compromised server doesn't mean data exposure. If you want to get fancy, you could have user quotas so you and all your friends set up a single swarm with shared storage and you'd have a very distributed cloud. Optionally add a hetzner instance to the swarm.

> Functionally it makes no difference whether you split near the middle or not -- a truly random selection would sometimes end up with a pile of one, and that's totally fine.

Yeah I just mean I would be very conscious of splitting with a single stalk in one group and would wonder if that was really a 'fair' selection or something I did intentionally since I know the exact number of the yarrow in one hand. In practice, I can't imagine anyone would make a selection like that, even though in a truly random system it would happen not infrequently.

I'm curious, and I figure you would know more about this than I do: when using real yarrow stalks for the I Ching, how do you split them into groups? I mean like, roughly equal? Don't think about it too much and just split? Just separating them into, say, groups where one group is just a single stalk doesn't seem random.

I guess it's a question of philosophy, either split into groups based off of your intuition, or aim for a truly random split in the pile.

Anyway, I wasn't sure if this is something that's a settled matter or what.

helterskelter··on Developing a food-safe finish for my wooden spoons
Just a heads up, rags used with raw linseed oil will ignite if you aren't careful with them. People say that only the rags used with boiled linseed oil will start fires, but I've seen rags used with raw oil ignite on two occasions.

Also...most linseed coatings will mold if they're not kept dry. If you'd like to avoid that, look for purified linseed oil -- it's regular linseed oil, but the proteins that mold feeds on have been removed. If you really want to go crazy, look for the stuff made from food grade oil.

helterskelter··on Ask HN: How can I get better at using AI for programming?
I like to followup with "Does this make sense?" or similar. This gets it to restate the problem in its own words, which not only shows you what its understanding of the problem is, it also seems to help reinforce the prompt.
helterskelter··on Sick of smart TVs? Here are your best options
This. I was reading about some of the ugly hacks Valve has had to get around to use 2.1 on the steam machine. They (HDMI consortium, whatever its called) won't let you use 2.1 if your video drivers are FOSS. Since SM has open drivers for the AMD card it's leading to subobtimal video output at certain resolution/framerate combos (4K@120fps? Something like that), and they can't legally advertise support for HDMI2.1.

helterskelter··on Ghostty is now non-profit
Is there a compelling reason to use ghostty on Linux, over say, gnome-terminal or foot?
helterskelter··on A Love Letter to FreeBSD
C'mon that just rude to Dada.
helterskelter··on The current state of the theory that GPL propagates to AI models
Running the program and analyzing the source code are two different things...?
helterskelter··on Cheese Consumption and Dementia in Older Japanese Adults: The Jages Cohort Study
TIL! Thank you.
helterskelter··on Cheese Consumption and Dementia in Older Japanese Adults: The Jages Cohort Study
This is surprising. You'd expect cholesterol to accumulate in the blood vessels in the brain and create problems.
helterskelter··on Maybe that's not liquid water on Mars after all
Yeah seconds per meter would be a more appropriate measure.
helterskelter··on Boom, bubble, bust, boom. Why should AI be different?
During covid you probably wanted a 70/30 split so you didn't get eaten by inflation, but I think 60/40 is probably a safer bet for the average person right now. I'd consider pulling back to 50/50 over the next 6 months to a year so you can loss harvest and skip the capital gains. I'd also consider moving money you don't expect to need anytime in the next decade into real estate.

I'm not really an investor btw, this is just my intuition. I'm curious what others here are doing.

helterskelter··on AI is a front for consolidation of resources and power
Honestly one the best use cases I've found for it is creating configs. It used to be that I was able to spend a week fiddling around with, say, nvim settings. Now I tell an LLM what I want and it basically gives it to me without having to do trial and error, or locating some obscure comment from 2005 that tells me what I need to know.
helterskelter··on The code and open-source tools I used to produce a science fiction anthology
I have no idea how accurate this comment from last week is, or if it applies beyond games, but the model is interesting:

> Japan has a scheme for orphaned games where if you can prove you did due diligence in searching for a rightsholder and couldn't find one, you can go ahead with rereleasing the game and the royalty payments get held in escrow by the government in case the rightsholder comes forward. I wish the US had something similar for cases like these.

helterskelter··on Google boss says AI investment boom has 'elements of irrationality'
I'm curious what HN is doing with their portfolios right about now. I'd be dumping NVDA and reallocating to more bonds for the time being.
helterskelter··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
My experience has been all Wranglers unless they have aftermarket "eyelids". I think their stock lights have zero angle and just blast straight ahead without pointing towards the ground. Most high intensity lights tend to point at the ground so you don't usually get it straight into your eyes.
helterskelter··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Honestly the worst offenders for shooting the lights right in your eyes are the Jeep Wranglers. I drive a work truck on occasion and the Jeeps are about the only vehicle that still get me looking for the fog line. High intensity lights are still really annoying though, and my eyes are probably 7-8ft off the ground.
helterskelter··on Why don't people return their shopping carts?
I never return my carts. I used to bag groceries in a grocery store and whenever I got sick of customers and/or coworkers I'd go get the carts. The more carts far out in the parking lot the better, I could an entire shift without being inside talking to customers.
helterskelter··on Lawmakers want to ban VPNs
The water's getting a little warm isn't it, fellow frogs?
helterskelter··on A Sad Collapse in Student Preparation at UC San Diego Was Inevitable
So in the article I read on AP or Reuters, 1/8 freshmen had below a middle school level of proficiency in math. If you're from outside the US, middle school is for kids aged ~11-14.
helterskelter··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
Hey it's a start. Get people together who don't like Flock cameras and tell them about pulling the modem out of their vehicle and you'll get some bites.
helterskelter··on Redmond, WA, turns off Flock Safety cameras after ICE arrests
I'm in the PNW and they put Flock cameras up in my area recently. Nobody likes them (libs or cons), and we've seen some rather creative approaches to uh...disabling them. One person took a pipe cutter to the mount and spirited the whole unit away, another apparently fired a shotgun slug through it, somebody else looks like they used it to relieve their anger problems with a metal pipe.

Flock cameras, America's bipartisan issue?
