hellweaver666··on The Raspberry Pi 5 Is No Match for a Tini-Mini-Micro PC
Absolutely right... I used to use Pi Zero W's for IOT projects. I had several of them around my house running sensors, rgb lights and the like. Now I can do the same thing with a much smaller device like an ESP32. Setting up a device that changes light colour based on time can be done with a €3 esp8266 flashed with WLED. For other projects I will use the beefier ESP32-S2/S3 or the Pi Pico Microcontroller.
hellweaver666··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining
This reminds me of when I used to work for an ISP. Every November the "my internet doesn't work when we turn on the Christmas tree" calls would start. It was usually interference from cheap tree lights, but occasionally it was people unplugging the router to plug in their Christmas tree :D
hellweaver666··on Apple planning default navigation app setting in iOS 18 for EU users
What I don't get is why they don't just roll it out everywhere? Surely it's more hassle for them to maintain multiple versions of iOS with different features for different markets?
hellweaver666··on My favourite animation trick: exponential smoothing (2023)
I appreciate the effort that goes into animation like this, but I always have to wonder, especially in the context of the web if it's worth all of the additional code and development time for such a minor detail. Do our users even notice?
hellweaver666··on Building a USB SNES Controller
I just followed this guide. It’s pretty straightforward! https://hackaday.io/project/16288/instructions
hellweaver666··on Building a USB SNES Controller
I once modified a SNES controller and put a whole Raspberry Pi Zero, battery and boost/charger board inside for a portable retropie setup.
hellweaver666··on Building a USB SNES Controller
I bet you could build something like this with a Seeeduino Xiao (or Adafruit QTPY) to get a smaller footprint inside the case and not need to modify the plastic.
hellweaver666··on Bottled water has 'up to 100 times' more bits of plastic than previously feared
you can get home filter systems (either manual jug style or plumbed in) that can deal with most of these problems.
hellweaver666··on 'It gets scary': Neighbors say these Bay Area ghost kitchens are out of control
Seems to me that the problem is less the buildings and more the fact that delivery drivers in the US seem to insist on using cars. Here in the Netherlands they deliver on scooters and bikes and create a lot less traffic problems.
hellweaver666··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
This feels like the workflow for a 3dprinter without Octoprint. I get the feature is there, but why on earth would you use it?
hellweaver666··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
I have a Dell 1350cnw, which is a rebranded Brother CMYK laser. I bought it in 2009 and it still works perfectly today (except for the fact I have to keep an old computer around as a print server because Dell refuse to release 64 bit drivers for it). I will almost certainly replace it with another Brother printer. I mostly only use it these days to print colouring pages for my kids and the very rare physical letter.
hellweaver666··on Building an occupancy sensor with a $5 ESP32 and a serverless DB
I have a number of similar devices but I use dirt cheap Wemos D1 Mini boards from Aliexpress, they usually cost around a buck each (and they come in ESP8266 and ESP32 variants).
hellweaver666··on Building an occupancy sensor with a $5 ESP32 and a serverless DB
Just a tip, if you want an ESP32 board that has more memory etc, look at the range from Unexpected Maker!
hellweaver666··on Building an occupancy sensor with a $5 ESP32 and a serverless DB
Seeed Studio (maker of the Xiao) have mmwave sensors that can do fall detection.
hellweaver666··on Ask HN: The Ideal Hosting for WordPress?
Would it be possible to have a super hardened dev environment where we can build/test/write etc in a normal WP style but deploy to a static hosted version (better performance, security etc)?
hellweaver666··on Still no love for WPA3 on the Raspberry Pi 5
I have six Raspberry Pi's (from the Pi Zero W all the way to the Pi 4) plus several other wifi microcontrollers (ESP8266, ESP32, Pico W etc) doing things around my home and they all happily sit on my wireless network without an issue. Is it possible that your home is subject to some kind of interference that they are struggling to cope with?

I used to work support for an ISP and we would always get customers calling up complaining that our wifi router was shit, but it almost always turned out to be some weird unshielded device causing electrical interference (I remember we would always get a glut of these calls around December when people plugged their cheap Christmas tree lights in!).

hellweaver666··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
Interestingly, mushrooms are actually illegal in the Netherlands, but thanks to a fun loophole the truffles are completely fine :D (for those not in the know, truffles usually have a lower % of psilocybin per gram so you have to eat more to get the same effects but the end result is about the same!)
hellweaver666··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
Sounds to me like you're still hallucinating.
hellweaver666··on Leaked Microsoft pay guidelines – salary, hiring bonus, stock awards by level
Yup... HR call it "benchmarking"
hellweaver666··on Invidious – An open source alternative front-end to YouTube
I would be very surprised if this isn't either in progress or done and just waiting for the right opportunity to roll it out.
hellweaver666··on Ask HN: How are so many fake ads allowed on YouTube?
The ones that get me are mobile games. They show some cool concept but when you install the game it's just a cookie-cutter pay-to-win RPG type thing.
hellweaver666··on Molly Holzschlag has died
This is super sad. I learnt HTML and CSS from following tutorials by Molly, even met her a couple of times at conferences. I really can't understate how much this woman shaped the web as we know it today. Rest well Molly!
hellweaver666··on Reddit faces content quality concerns after its Great Mod Purge
You just have to sign-out and look at the homepage to see this. It's all attention grabbing subs like AITAH or "amiugly" or "ratemyface" etc etc etc. All the interesting subs have withered away and died. Take /r/3dprinting for example, there used to be cool new models shared there every single day, now it's just people sharing pictures of benchies, globs of spaghetti and the odd question from someone that hasn't done any research.
hellweaver666··on A complete guide to building a hand-wired keyboard (2020)
Building your own keyboards is super satisfying. I started off hand-wiring a couple of macropads and then built a 60% handwire and a split ergo. Finally with all the knowledge I learnt I designed a PCB for a macropad and then just scaled up to my own keyboard which is a 50% ortholinear keyboard which has three extra "macro" switches on the side. I found a switch footprint that allows it to take "normal" or "low profile" style switches so I have a version for home and a super slim version for taking to the office.

I think the only thing I would do differently now is to dump QMK and use KMK instead as it's Circuit Python based which means that the firmware can be created and edited directly with your favourite IDE (QMK requires installing all sorts of extra software and compiling etc). If the Microcontroller ever dies on this board I will definitely swap it out for a CircuitPython compatible alternative!

hellweaver666··on Show HN: My Pen Plotting Journey
People have attatched pens to 3d printers and done this!
hellweaver666··on Dutch E-Bike startup VanMoof unable to pay the bills
I drive an ebike by a German Company called Reise and Muller (https://www.r-m.de/en-en/bikes/). For the electrics, it uses off the shelf parts from Bosch which means you can buy spares (batteries, motors, controller etc) online and install them yourself with relatively little fuss. The motor also has a bunch of unused power that you can unlock if you're ok with getting your hands dirty ;)
hellweaver666··on Maker Faire Bay Area Returns
the UK has Makers Central which happens at the NEC in Birmingham https://www.makerscentral.co.uk/
hellweaver666··on Banging sounds heard during Titan search, according to internal government memo

hellweaver666··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
they are open source projects without major financial backing. Mastodon had a similar challenge last year when people started leaving Twitter en masse.
hellweaver666··on Sub.Rehab – See where Reddit communities have relocated
the subreddit still exists (even if Mods removed it, Admins would recreate) but the communities are at least partially moving to the Fediverse.
