helltone··on Rust solves the problem of incomplete Kernel Linux API docs
I didn't know rust was able to tell when a method is thread safe. Where can I read more about that/try it out?
helltone··on Ask HN: What are your favorite index ETFs for Investing?
What bank/app do you use to invest (I'm in UK)?
helltone··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (May 2024)
I'm a hands-on engineering manager with a very technical background. I like to work bridging product, people and technology.

Location: London, UK

Remote: I prefer onsite

Willing to relocate: no

Technologies: C++, Python, AI, compilers, computational geometry.

Résumé/CV: https://funchal.github.io/

helltone··on GQL: A New ISO Standard in Graph Query Language
It is quite ridiculous in my opinion that the iso standard is paywalled. When it comes to standards, we should be driving adoption by making it accessible, in particular for open source developers, students learning etc. Piracy of standards may actually be beneficial for their success. I wonder who buys the access at such price and how much money iso makes it any at all.
helltone··on 3D + 2D: Testing out my cross-platform WASM graphics engine
Great work Sean, this is quite impressive. It seems you were previously an EM, but clearly very technical. I'm currently an EM and technical as well. I'm wondering what made you take the jump and decide to build this on your own. I'm in a different domain, but my industry seems stuck in a local-minimum that just sort of works well enough, and I have a lot of thoughts about what-if things were built in a different way. Can you share a bit more about your story and any advice in making this sort of jump successfully. I'm happy to take it offline (my contact is in my profile).

helltone··on Ask HN: What was the last project you worked on that you enjoyed?
I enjoy most projects that I work on. Recently I worked on some graph merging algorithm that was pretty fun. I am also working on a parser generator on my sparse time. Before that I worked on some database query planner.
helltone··on Implementing Cosine in C from Scratch (2020)
What would it take to have a parameterized algorithm where you specify the precision you want and get a fast implementation for that precision?
helltone··on Ask HN: What technology is “cutting edge” in 2022?
WebGPU, particularly as a portable way to do compute
helltone··on Ask HN: How do you find companies that hire for broad experience and aptitude?
My team is looking for people that fit this description, feel free to email me (address in my profile)
helltone··on No-code in manufacturing: automation without programming
Is no-code the new trend because full automation with AI failed? I wonder if we're trying to realise what jobs actually require skilled labour.
helltone··on New in Git: switch and restore
What is a good resource to learn modern git properly? I have been using git for 10 years and get around with a really small set of old commands.
helltone··on A New Era for Mechanical CAD
Philosophical question but why do we still use nurbs instead of, for example, subdivision surfaces? Is that mostly because users want to export to nurbs after editing?
helltone··on Ask HN: Should I quit software development?
I'm in literally the same conundrum.
helltone··on RectCut for dead simple UI layouts
This sounds like a fascinating topic.
helltone··on Implementing a LLVM Micro C compiler in Haskell
This looks great, are there any similar tutorials written for languages other than Haskell?
helltone··on RectCut for dead simple UI layouts
How does layout in say LaTeX compare? Is text/font layout different fundamentally?
helltone··on PolarDB, yet another open source database system based on PostgreSQL
Yellowbrick
helltone··on Are we game yet? – A guide to the Rust game development ecosystem
does it support webasm/html5?
helltone··on Arb: Efficient Arbitrary-Precision Midpoint-Radius Interval Arithmetic (2016)
I dream of a programming language where I would be able to specify a computation and maybe error bounds on input/output and get efficient code respecting the bounds automatically. Arb takes us close to that, but I still have to handle recomputing with greater precision by hand, and things get complicated with multiple inputs. What are your thoughts on making arbitrary precision/rigorous error bounds more ergonomic to use for programmers?
helltone··on Being Glue
I am someone who enjoys/excels at being a "glue", I'm not quite an engineering manager yet but I don't write tons of code anymore either. I have been struggling to find a job. Every job I see is either entry level individual contributor or senior manager. Where do I find companies that value and seek glue/leads?
helltone··on Durability: NVMe Disks
Can I have a reference for that hardcoded buffer size please?
helltone··on Remove first 300M lines from 700 GB file on 1TB disk
While filesystem block is usually 4k, I think ssd blocks are in the 256k-4mb range. So 4k is probably a bad choice.
helltone··on When feature flags do and don’t make sense (2019)
It might be better estimated by the binomial coefficient 7,2=21, since each patch has to be backported to every other version. Still kind of exponential.
helltone··on Open Problems in Robotics
It seems you are taking about theoretical error bounds, that is proofs in papers with assumptions on input probabilities etc. These don't always apply to actual implementations, in physical real robots. There is a huge gap in safety between practices in aerospace engineering and robotics.
helltone··on Open Problems in Robotics
One problem I encountered while working on robotics is that many commonly used algorithms yield approximate solutions with no error bounds. They work 99.99‰ of the time. This is fine from a computer science or math point of view, but very scary from an engineering perspective, specifically when there are humans nearby. A big part of me struggles to accept the suitability of algorithms coming from gaming engines or machine learning etc for real world heavy duty robots. The lack of rigour in the field is astonishing.
helltone··on Show HN: dstack – an open-source tool to build data applications easily
Looks great, how do you compare to other alternatives in the same space?
helltone··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (August 2020)

I'm an experienced software engineer with a passion for working in collaborative teams, and a research/optimization background. I also have some management experience if that comes in handy. Looking for my next opportunity.

helltone··on Remote First at Quora
That, and the fact that all the benefits snacks beer gym etc will all be lost not replaced.
helltone··on Who still needs the office? U.S. companies start cutting space
How would this work when both parents work different jobs and children in school?
