I say 5 years before we have a moral panic about this

hellfish··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
> New York is where the jobs are. Just leave and get another 200k job as a banker where?

If you scale that 200k for cost of living it shouldn't be very hard to find an alternative

hellfish··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
> to construct a society

Did anyone in particular construct this society, or was it just given?

You can't judge society at large by the same ethical standard that you judge an individual

hellfish··on Why it’s hard to buy deodorant in Manhattan
There's a simple solution to this: just leave, and take your taxable income with you. If a jurisdiction can't do a basic function of government, why the fuck would you want to perpetuate the administrative disease any further? Paying taxes to these jurisdictions is like enabling an abusive relationship

You just don't get the message ig? Maybe if you just stop thinking and accept that 2+2=5 it will make sense :)
hellfish··on Ask HN: Is it just me?
Maybe the reason for fallout is because the honeymoon phase has already gone by, and you want something different but haven't come to terms with that yet?

You shouldn't put pressure on yourself to make something work if you're getting disillusioned. Better to go somewhere better

hellfish··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
> These people were swastika waving full blown white nationalists.

There are videos of it available for anyone who wants to fact check the claim you're making here. Watched a bunch, can't find a swastika anywhere

hellfish··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
Funny to see a self proclaimed "activist organization" leaking private citizen information for people donating to a peaceful protest

Anyone who claims these people are "successors to WikiLeaks" is full of it

hellfish··on Chief scientist of major corporation can’t handle criticism of the work he hypes
> Like, I don't quite believe the claim because I'm defensively rational, but I feel a certain dizziness and confusion (thinking to myself, "could this actually be true?") until I come back to my senses. The more outlandish and impassioned the speech, the stronger the effect.

I always like to ask myself: "what are they trying to get me to do?". Whether it's a habit, voting pattern, product, etc. Then I ask myself: "is it useful? who does it benefit?"

Whether it's true or not, idrc. what's more important (at least to me) is what it does and who it benefits

(also in this case to avoid any ethical conundrums, something is useful if it makes $, beneficial to X party if it makes them $)

hellfish··on Help seed Z-Library on IPFS
> Even if you use DNS-over-HTTPS/TLS, you don't know if your DNS provider is in cahoots with the eavesdropper. You have to trust someone

but in this case, couldn't you just use an offshore dns provider that's in a jurisdiction that won't cooperate with judicial system? (assuming here adversary is getting sued by copyright holder, not govt agency)

hellfish··on Help seed Z-Library on IPFS
> so the SNI and Host header already gives it away, TLS or not

Couldn't you just use ech/esni, ISP wouldn't see the domain only IP (and dns provider)?

hellfish··on Help seed Z-Library on IPFS
We're talking about seeding a library full of copyrighted content. The person who made this site couldn't take 2 seconds to set up HTTPS? They're either incompetent or part of a honeypot. In either case, it's best to steer clear

Keep in mind, the first post on this site was in 2022. 2022, and no https... is this some kind of joke?

And in this case the adversary isn't necessarily the three letters, it's the copyright holders and legal system. No https makes ISP logs even more useful

hellfish··on Help seed Z-Library on IPFS
Why the hell is this site not https? Note the first blog post was in 2022. No https in 2022? Red flag. This looks like a honeypot to me

And for the record, z library gets its books from libgen? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was just a frontend?

> In February 2022, after many anonymous donors supported the 2022 Freedom Convoy, DDoSecrets began providing journalists and researchers with a hacked list of donors' personal information from GiveSendGo

Oh sure. Go give a government organization government leaks. What a great idea!

hellfish··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
What do the politicians have to hide? Why does it matter who the leak comes from?

I could give a shit less if X foreign govt leaks the info, the politicians are the ones we should really be concerned about

hellfish··on Oh, the Places Your Apple ID Will Go
This isn't really all that surprising

Anyone who uses Apple/Google/Microsoft/other products as intended will have no privacy. By as intended, I mean using chrome while logged into a google account, using MacOS while logged into an apple account (and using all of apple's internal applications), using android with a google account, etc

I wouldn't be surprised if the usage data, health data, from e.g. iOS+services goes straight to data brokers. I can't prove this, but it wouldn't surprise me. Even if it didn't, there's no guarantee of how the data will be used internally (or whether it's given to law enforcement, for example)

If someone uses these products as intended and has even the slightest expectation of privacy (e.g. believing any of the vague BS in the TOS), they're probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer (or at the very least, grossly misinformed)

hellfish··on Oh, the Places Your Apple ID Will Go
> What is the value in anonymizing your voluntary engagement within a single corporate entity?

Because up to a certain point it isn't voluntary

> Why for example would I want to make it any more difficult for my doctor at a hospital and the hospital pharmacy to share my confidential health information to ensure I get the right treatment?

Because principle of least privilege. This is one example, another could be the doctor sharing health data with an internal hospital logging service, which is utilizing some cloud service, which is utilizing some other cloud service, etc

hellfish··on Oh, the Places Your Apple ID Will Go
> I mean, people on HN will argue that it's wrong to block ads

I've never seen this attitude here. Not once. Do you have any examples?

Sometimes the illness is better than the cure
hellfish··on The case against the Twitter apology and our culture of performed remorse
This reply will probably get downvoted, but grace has inherent issues.

Actual grace in Christianity involves becoming a believer, no? That comes with its own set of obligations. Combine this with a culture that jumps at the opportunity to capitalize off of people's misery and you have a recipe for self destruction. Look at the pharma companies poisoning this country with opiates if you want an example

Grace requires a level of trust that isn't possible in the current economic configuration

hellfish··on The case against the Twitter apology and our culture of performed remorse
> In the US, at least, if you engage with conservative culture, with Christians, with rural people, with the people who are tired of "cancel culture," you will still find plenty of grace.

The sjws and Christians show grace in exactly the same way: you earn it by converting.

Middle America also has it's own issues, nihilism, crab mentality (big one), and drug issues (also a coastal problem) are some that come to mind

hellfish··on The case against the Twitter apology and our culture of performed remorse

> I've been asked to kill myself countless times, countless people told me they had fucked my mom, etc. But when you go above that

There is no going above that. That's what psychological abuse looks like, and you're justifying it to yourself

You can have a community that isn't full of passive aggressive people and also not a disgusting shithole. Look at hn as an example. You're only hurting yourself in the long run

hellfish··on The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns

No way in hell this will happen, just saying

hellfish··on “Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted and demonetized”
The people who oppose free speech always try to redefine it this way.

Freedom of speech is freedom from censorship or moderation. Not freedom from discomfort
