Is it consuming too much science fiction that has people thinking like this?
heinternets··on The West forgot how to make things, now it’s forgetting how to code
When you've run out of ideas just portray "the west" as some monolithic portrait in some decline-porn fan fiction as clickbait.

heinternets··on PRC elites voice AI-skepticism
Apart from the obvious, China seems to be making incredibly reasonable decisions lately. Especially compared to the current superpower.
heinternets··on Self-hosting a NAT Gateway
Please can we do away with NAT forever. Why are we still encouraging this? It’s caused the world to do horrible kludges and continues to do so.
heinternets··on Germany to ban Huawei from future 6G network
Look at the Wikipedia article “criticism of Huawei” for a massive list of IP theft, espionage, backdoors and more, including references.

Do you have any examples? Asking for a friend.
heinternets··on Aisuru botnet shifts from DDoS to residential proxies
The issue with this is in many authoritarian nations they will see your Wireguard link and block it. Or even knock at your door.
heinternets··on Suspicionless ChatControl must be taboo in a state governed by the rule of law
People in China have every packet inspected and injected with a malicious payload if it doesnt suit their government. They may get a knock at the door if they say something bad. It also restricts free access to information.

They dont just “feel” oppressed, they are.

heinternets··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
May I suggest getting a cheap VPS in another country and using SSH to tunnel traffic, or even setup a window manager on the VPS.

In London it was a different story to the USA.
heinternets··on Content Authentication Technologies will do more harm than good
Since AI video creation is now a big topic, was looking for a way to authenticate real videos and media. Seems this just opens a whole host of other problems.
heinternets··on Reverse engineering the obfuscated TikTok VM
Is TikTok so obfuscated to prevent people from knowing the full extent of data collection and device fingerprinting?
heinternets··on A flowing WebGL gradient, deconstructed
This looks very smooth. Would this be in 10 bit colour if the display supports it? I can't see any banding even when zoomed in Safari or Brave on a MBP with HDR display.
heinternets··on TCL's bet on screens that look like paper
If you want to be able to fully present the full range of HDR you need at least 1,000 but more like 10,000 nits.
heinternets··on Static IPs for Serverless Containers
So much work seems to go into working around the limitations of IPv4 instead of towards a fully IPv6 capable world.
heinternets··on Should We Chat, Too? Security Analysis of WeChat's Mmtls Encryption Protocol
China have their own crypto standard OSCCA, which uses the SM4 cipher, SM3 hash function etc instead of using the AES, ECDH, RSA algorithms everyone else does. The OSCCA standard are only approved for use in China.

I feel this is somehow an attack on free speech but I can't articulate how
heinternets··on The NSA advises you to turn your phone off and back on once a week
That article says it’s just a BT beacon chip left on, nothing else in the phone is on.

There's articles all over the place about it if you look. For example:

You can decide this by not owning an Apple device
heinternets··on Unbricking my MacBook took an email to Tim Cook
How would you provide this type of locking system without giving users access to their own private keys, then having a much worse problem where dozens of users lose their private keys and forever brick their device?
heinternets··on I hate work
So then how ARE we supposed to spend our lives on this planet and where is this defined?
heinternets··on Naomi Wu and the Silence That Speaks Volumes
Naomi said to the interviewer it was in regards to her previously publicising the Sogou software security vulnerabilities in 2019:
