heffer··on Wiring my home with fiber
I think one major use case in this particular scenario is that the author has one 25 Gbit/s and one 10 Gbit/s internet service. If you want to make the most use of this fibre is the only way to go.

If it's any consolation I used your site at the beginning of the pandemic to get a photo from our office to use as a virtual background. You know, back when virtual backgrounds were new and it was still funny to fool people into thinking you're in the office (which was closed).
heffer··on Microsoft Creative Writer (1993)
I have very fond memories of using Creative Writer and (more so) Fine Artist as a kid. Thanks for sharing this.
heffer··on Ask HN: How would you bootstrap a telco?
I think having a good understanding of the ways the Canadian incumbents can screw you out of a business is certainly helpful. Check out Community Fibre's submission to the CRTC here (the 3.7MB document): https://services.crtc.gc.ca/pub/ListeInterventionList/Docume...

It has lots of specifics about how Bell in particular will use anti-competitive tactics to hamper your business. Also, in many parts of Canada there are simply no other transport providers other than the incumbents that could transport your traffic from your community to an IXP. To stay out of trouble your best bet is usually using a company like Zayo (if you're close to CP rail lines, ex-Allstream fibre) or using incumbents outside of their residential service area (eg. using Shaw for Transport in Ontario if you happen to be close to their fibre).

I really recommend reading the entire 44 pages and then giving Benjamin a call if you have any specific questions. He's a great guy that has experience bootstrapping a fibre ISP (albeit in Ontario, not BC) and can talk about important topics such as pole attachment and dealing with hydro/Bell. I remember our discussion ending up focusing on funding issues with regards to a lack of grant or venture funding of 30+ year horizon infrastructure projects. I think we spoke for almost 2 hours.

Also:

> People can hear me gulp

Imagine being on a video call with people constantly gulping. That and people looking like they are wearing some kinky gear.

I had to do a double take on the "Powered by Plus Codes" section of that website as one of the pictures they used there shows a girl holding some kind of document in front of a plus code labelled house. Her shirt reads "It's a all a big lie". I thought that was hilarious.
heffer··on Talos Linux
I had somewhat of a weird moment here as well. I was expecting this to be related to Cisco Talos.

And so I opened your link to find out what it was about. Only to find it mentioning CAPI 2.0 which I only know from the ISDN days (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_ISDN_Application_Progra...) and not as some form of I/O interface accelerator.

heffer··on ESPHome – Connect ESP32 with Sensors to HomeAssistant
Now that's a blog post I'd read.

Yes, playing the lottery is easy. Winning the lottery, not so much.

Canada does not currently have a viable immigration model for non-dependents immigration. The Parents-Grandparents stream takes 30,000 applications a year through a lottery system because demand is so high. So it could take many years before you get to bring your parents.

Fleet Commander with FreeIPA is as close as it gets I'd say.
heffer··on Ubiquiti vs. Krebs
> Meraki could have been that until the Cisco acquisition and now $$$$ (and they make it extremely hard for SMBs/ProSumers to buy in).

Meraki competes against Ubiquiti and Aruba InstantOn with Meraki Go, not mainline Meraki.

heffer··on Mourning loss as a remote team
Our company offers its US employees access to a service called Wellthy. It is good to know that when you are dealing with issues in your personal life you can reach out to a dedicated, named individual that has expertise in the area you are struggling and that is there to help you navigate and organize. Even if it's just for the feeling that you are not alone.

Similar programs are available to employees in other countries.

heffer··on Java Development on an Apple M1 – A One Year Review
Works the other way around as well: Compile platform independent code (such as Java) on --platform=$BUILDPLATFORM in a build stage and then copy into containers that are --platform=$TARGETPLATFORM. That way your build only runs once, natively, but you can produce the correct runtime containers for each architecture rather quickly.
heffer··on Ask HN: How can scam callers fake a mobile phone number?
The same principle is applied when you use call forwarding on most SIP providers. They "spoof" the real caller's Caller ID when forwarding the call, so that the forwarded call reaches your phone with the number of the actual caller, not some random number assigned to your account or the provider. If they didn't do this you wouldn't be able to call the original caller back directly from your call log.

This would be a legitimate use case for Caller ID spoofing.

heffer··on Ask HN: How can scam callers fake a mobile phone number?
If you are on Telus or any of their other brands you should be able to configure "Call Control". This feature prompts an unknown caller to type a given digit before the call is actually connected. Filters out 100% of all spam and other automatically dialed calls. Very very rarely I had people miss the prompt and as a result not being able to reach me. We're talking like 2 calls in 3 years. They reached me via email and all was good in the end.

Oftentimes it is so that you have to interact with the website which subsequently allows the webpage to autoplay media with audio or track engagement with a particular piece of content.

I’ve been using something like this within Grocy, an open source grocery and household management tool. I find it very useful.
heffer··on You Don't Need the Cloud
Hetzner has a presence in the US (for their Cloud offerings) but not for Dedicated or Colo.

The Colo looks cheap because it does not include any power usage. But by German standards (and at this time) the price Hetzner charges for power consumption can be considered economical.

heffer··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Any power vented gas water heater will require electricity to function correctly. More modern gas ranges will too, if they support child safety features, such as range lock-out, which may be required in some locales.

Same goes for gas fireplaces that do not have a standing pilot and electrically actuated valves, which many newer appliances have.

Likely referring to the European neobank Vivid Money.
heffer··on Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
In Germany (and some other EU countries) pre-orders come with Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 (A ~270 EUR value). Here in Canada not only is the phone more expensive, it also "only" comes with Pixel Buds which are a ~CAD 160 value after tax. The Bose headphones are also more expensive in Canada (as pretty much anything except gas and electricity) so they'd be an even better value here.

So I'll investigate if there are significant (to me) differences between the EU and Canada models and may just order it in Germany then.

heffer··on 112 Gripes About the French
> nothing seems inappropriate

"The French can't drive a car. They can't keep it up. They ruin vehicles."

The French, on the whole, certainly do not drive as well, keep a car up as well, or protect their vehicles as well as we do. Neither do women, compared to men.

We have had more mechanical training, more technical experience. And at the present time we have incomparably better maintenance facilities.

heffer··on A Warning to Users of NurseryCam
> Out of curiosity, why is viewing nursery footage seen as serious?

As a parent you are your child's guardian, which generally means that it is your responsibility to protect your child. I would assume most people would try to protect themselves against having their surveillance footage accessed by unauthorized parties and so this parent (the author) is trying to achieve this for their children.

I personally can imagine scenarios where for the purposes of social engineering it is advantageous for a malicious actor to get access to the footage of your child's nursery to, for example, study when your child is generally there or when you pick them up or who picks them up.

heffer··on Apache OpenMeetings – Video chat, messaging, white board, doc editing and more
Some competitors like Cisco opt to deploy their own AS (Webex is AS13445) optimized towards eyeball networks because capacity and latency to Google and Amazon can be tricky with some incumbents. So they generally have good control over their cost this way.
heffer··on How to better ventilate your home
This is true in Germany, where most in-home heating systems use radiant heat. I have since moved to Canada and my house uses forced air and a gas furnace. I can still feel cold at 21.5°C in my forced air heated house which I never did in Germany. Radiant heat does a much better job of heating the things in your house than forced air will. Heating things, and not just the air, is what has them store that warmth across Stoßlüften-Sessions. So technically, Stoßlüften works well with radiant heated homes, less so with forced air heated homes.
heffer··on Apache Tika – a content analysis toolkit
I only learned of Tika through Dovecot which can use it to include email attachments in it's Full Text Search index using it. Pretty neat stuff.
