hdz··on Starcraft Brood War self-play RL bot beats strong human [video]
It’s great hearing Artosis’ voice again. He also commentated one of the DeepMind AlphaStar show matches.
hdz··on Ask HN: How do GitHub Copilot and Anthropic Claude compare in cost?
Claude is the most expensive route for enterprise. With copilot at least you can choose cheaper models if things get too expensive and restrict them in the worst case. None are cheap though you’re talking hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars a year if you have over a thousand people using it.
hdz··on People hooked on vapes try a new way to quit: cigarettes
Thank you for writing this.
hdz··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Tons of value left, especially for open source models. I would say the benchmark is yet to be truly saturated (just look at the legs and seat to see what I am talking about) and I always look forward to seeing them. Thank you!
hdz··on A Screensaver for LG's Spying Smart TVs
Anyone else make the switch to projectors from TVs as a primary way of watching media?
hdz··on Doomscrolling Ourselves to Death
I encourage those who want to read more to start a book club with their friends. My club has read 6 books now and it gets at two things the article mentions, isolation and illiteracy.

I’ve recently also subscribed to a few in print magazines to address the desire for up to date recent information we get from social media.

HN is still hard to quit, the amount of useful information here is still high. digg.com summarizes X which I’ve found to be useful for not feeling like I am missing out on discussions there.

hdz··on Project HydraFusion: Frontier quality via multi-model orchestration
If you’re a copilot cli user (we exist) you know that the auto mode leaves something to be desired. It only changes models at the start of a session or after compaction. Most dev tasks are now sub agent heavy and there is no model routing on the sub agents.

I do notice that there is no mention of effort levels in the comparisons. 5.6 Luna Max is really good and really cheap. A 5.6 Sol high orchestrator with 5.6 Luna max is cheap, has frontier level performance, and is faster than Sol alone. This can be accomplished with simple agent instructions. Looking forward to running my own benchmarks on HydraFusion to see how it fares. Gone are the days of a single model doing all of the work it seems, unless the work requires no tool calls.

hdz··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
I'm not looking to change your view. But for other readers who are curious, here is a link to an interesting task to gain intuition. Ahmad is a good data point for someone who tinkered, built intuition, then started his own ai company. https://twitter.com/TheAhmadOsman/status/2087742080793620593...
hdz··on Olo (Color)
The closest approximation to Olo colored paint you can buy is also by the company that makes some of the blackest black paint. I haven't used it personally. https://culturehustle.com/collections/paint/products/yolo-ne...
hdz··on Better Gaussian Splatting in Julia
Having this work on Apple metal is huge for the accessibility around training splats. I remember two years ago I needed an RTX Nvidia GPU to run things like splatfacto on nerfstudio. Very neat optimizations as well like the depth map and sky dome, 3dgs has come a long way. Awesome!
hdz··on Lake Vostok
Agreed. I used to hear news about it in the early 2010s then nothing since then. I imagine it could tell us about potential life on other planets with oceans under their surfaces
hdz··on Astronomers may have found the first exomoon
A small dense planet, which orbits a star, is orbited by a larger gaseous moon. It's interesting the discovery is in Chile which has some of the best night skies, a Class 1 on the Bortle scale specifically in the Atacama Desert. Hoping to make it out there one day.
hdz··on Show HN: Immersive Gaussian Splat tour of grace cathedral, San Francisco
Hi Vincent, the Sutro Tower 3dgs demo is one I enjoyed a lot. I'd whip it out on my phone and show people saying, 'hey look this is whats possible with 3D Gaussian Splatting'. And this Grace Catherdral splat is stunning. It showcases one of my favorite parts of 3dgs which is reflections and glass. The color and essence of the stained glass comes through so well.

The cutaway Peek feature is like a sci fi version of an Stephen Biesty's Incredible Cross-Sections book. Incredible work!

hdz··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
The harnesses will tend towards commoditization, but for now the harness quality matters a lot. Especially for non terminal harnesses.
hdz··on DVD-Audio
DVD-Audio vs SACD was one of those strange format wars where there was no winner arguably, both lost to MP3s and later music streaming. But SACD is making a comeback lately. I’m not sure if it will ever be as popular as vinyl but physical media is really having a revival. SACD being developed by Sony and Philips may have something to do with its longevity compared to DVD audio which was developed by an industry consortium, plus it has a much cooler logo
hdz··on Local, CPU-Friendly, High-Quality TTS (Text-to-Speech) with Kokoro
Great point! these are better than Samantha and they're free. But still, if I could wait a few seconds to get a much richer TTS experience I'd pay for that.
hdz··on Local, CPU-Friendly, High-Quality TTS (Text-to-Speech) with Kokoro
Who is going to hack together a mac widget that allows us to select text anywhere, press a shortcut key and finally get a non robotic voice outputted in a reasonable amount of time?

I am aware of the Option + Esc shortcut on osx for the onboard TTS but wow is it hard to listen to in 2026.

hdz··on Workers Cache
Does anything beat a free static site hosted with Cloudflare workers at this point, performance wise?
hdz··on Show HN: CLI tool for detecting non-exact code duplication with embedding models
Very nice. I can imagine putting this into a pre push hook to keep things clean after an initial sweep.
hdz··on ZCode – Harness for GLM-5.2
When the harnesses commoditize, it will be the dynamic things like skills that will be the most valuable, useful thing you can bring to a harness. That seems like a long ways away though. There are still meaningful performance differences between agent harnesses.
hdz··on Why jet engines aren't made in China
“America is in decline” is the consensus view. America dominating on all fronts is the contrarian view. I expect these views to swing like a pendulum in public discussion until something meaningful happens or until it’s clear in the rearview that America is in fact is more like UK, Japan, or Germany.
hdz··on New Relic to open-source Pixie’s eBPF observability platform
Any plans to bring this to Cloud Foundry?
