hbt··on Show HN: A directory of the best free resources for remote workers and nomads
for ref, you should use https://github.com/lukasz-madon/awesome-remote-job to improve your list.

it's already curated and contains great content.

hbt··on Github search sucks (and how it could be better)
all files ending with py with "import flask"

https://github.com/search?q=filename%3A%2A.py+%22import+flas...

use advanced search to specify stars:>20 etc.

hbt··on Show HN: FaaS – Serverless functions framework for Docker
Anyone knows how this compare to iron functions https://github.com/iron-io/functions

Looks similar. Docker image with entry point but the entry point is a server instead of process and it reuses the docker container instead of shutting it down

Would be great to get a quick comparison between the two.

Another tool in the same category is hook.io microcule https://github.com/Stackvana/microcule

both iron functions and microcule are battle tested by companies

hbt··on Ask HN: What do you use to align your daily todos with your long term goals?
I like the 4dx approach. Lead measures vs Lag measures.

you pick a long term goal and associate a metric to it.

Example: weight from 180 to 170 That's your lag measure.

Your lead measure are the activities you get done daily.

- Daily caloric intake

- sleep schedule

- exercise routine

- water intake

- intermittent fasting

Your lead measure influence your lag measure but as the name indicates, it takes time before you notice the effect.

Focus on your lead metrics and adjust when they are not working.

hbt··on The Myth of Developer Productivity
Gist:

- you can't measure programmer productivity

- instead of brainstorming ways to increase it or measure it. Focus on reducing friction, impediments to progress and measure fine grained tasks (like design, test, review, release etc.)

hbt··on Hollywood as We Know It Is Over
There is a name for that: price gouging.

Maybe you can justify selling an ebook for 800$ because when using it the customer will recover their investment.

What if your hospital/doctor/insurance starts doing that? After all, wouldn't be a good investment to not be DEAD or suffering? Wouldn't you give them a shit load of money for all that value they created for you?

It's a bullshit justification for milking people out of their money.

I prefer the Amazon/walmart approach. Commoditize aggressively and keep the competition away by having low profit margins. Make your money off volume instead of gouging a small pool of customers.

The same applies to this Hollywood crap. They are price gouging with licensing deals, geo-location restrictions, delayed releases etc. Then wonder why aren't enough people willing to pay us what we ask them to? Fuck off.

hbt··on What’s up with Firefox?
chromium is open source and you can create a google account and add each API you want.

There are no ties to big corp unless you want to. You don't get features from giant cluster of computers for free.

When firefox implements voice recognition, translation etc., I will look forward to how they decide to monetize it.

Regarding "about:config", that's a great feature. Let's see if it still exists in the future versions. After all, wouldn't it confuse the mainstream masses they are so desperate to appeal to?

When they start caring about power users again, I will switch. Until then, they can keep dumbing it down til it's garbage.

hbt··on What’s up with Firefox?
Firefox is trying to be chrome where as chrome is leading the way.

Chrome dev tools are superior to firefox where I remember a time nothing could compete with firebug.

The chrome extension API is now better than the upcoming "Web extensions" which removes extensions access to XUL and dumbs down the API to make it compatible with chrome extensions.

They've been trying to replicate the chrome sandbox for years and it still hasn't made it to production.

It goes on and on. They are catching up and doing it poorly, not leading nor innovating.

hbt··on What’s up with Firefox?
checkout "tabs outliner" on chrome.
hbt··on Police seek Amazon Echo data in murder case
The part that listens for the "Alexa" word is analog not digital.

It cannot be updated remotely by firmware.

Crack open the device, test the analog component and confirm the signal only fires when you speak alexa and nothing else.

Having said all that, I wouldn't buy it. NSA is known to temper with devices behind the back of companies (no matter how trustworthy you think Amazon/Google/Apple are). Check what they did with Cisco equipment sold to foreigners. They intercepted the shipment, tempered with the device and no one was any wiser until the Snowden leaks. Cisco now ships via proxy to guarantee no tempering.

American businesses shouldn't fear globalization or chinese disregard for intellectual property; their own government is fucking them.

hbt··on Ask HN: What motivates you in life?
The belief that tomorrow will be better than today. That progress is being made.
hbt··on Yahoo installed a backdoor for the NSA behind the back of the security team
So now, quitting your job (because you're asked to do something unethical) is the equivalent of losing your life and limbs?

Let me guess, you believe all government actions are lawful. All lawful actions are righteous and justified. The only permissible way to change the system is through the system. Did I get the gist of your morality?

In which case, keep voting and I'm sure you will see the changes you want reflected in legislation just so they can be ignored in by secret courts and intelligence services.

In the real world, people respond to threats (e.g prison). That's what the government uses. Why are we expected to behave differently?

hbt··on Yahoo installed a backdoor for the NSA behind the back of the security team
This is why we (as a community/industry) need to have the equivalent of a prison/death threat.

The government wins by making it personal, by threatening prison and death for your obedience. It's not an abstract threat. It is directed to a specific person not a company or security team.

The people who comply can quit those companies but they don't. I'm not referring to the ones down the chain (e.g the security team who was unaware) but the ones who obeyed and pushed something they believed was wrong.

Whether it is public shaming or having a permanent stain on their reputation next time they go job hunting, we need a way to retaliate.

Right now, they can fuck us and get away with it and what's their excuse? "the government told me to do it. Just doing my job. I had no choice."

There are no societal consequences to cooperating with the government even when we believe it's wrong.

Create a climate of "snitches get stitches" and maybe they will think twice before selling out the lives of a billion people. The same way these government officials hide behind patriotism when they mean blind obedience to my authority.

hbt··on Ask HN: Senior developers, what would you tell a younger you?
* Get it to work first. Make it pretty later.

* Don't waste time & energy learning trendy tech. Hold your excitement and ask yourself: "what can I do with it that I can't do with my existing arsenal and is it worth the ROI?"

* Learn to identify companies that are nothing more than feature factories

* Ownership is better than a paycheque. It means control over your decisions and work quality.

* When working at corp/consulting, focus on the things you can control and the people you can influence. The rest is out of your hands and not worth the emotional investment.

* Learn to let go. Tech gets out of date. Software you spent years working on gets replaced. Stuff stops working because of dependencies down the line. Nothing lasts forever.

* Focus on getting better and investing in yourself.

hbt··on Global warming: The state of the climate in 2016
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this.

No one has a solution for climate change that doesn't involve changing personal habits. People don't want to do that. Eating less meat or a carbon tax (i.e taxing the working poor) is not a solution. It's admitting defeat.

People don't need to "believe in climate change". We simply need to build a solution that is much better than what they have available now. What that solution is? Plenty of ideas, no one has a clue how to execute them.

The current strategy for the left is: let's see how guilty we can make people feel about their consumption habits and scare them with far distant consequences. Talk about funding "green"/eco-friendly businesses which barely make a difference and try to sell people on carbon tax.

For the right, the strategy is: deny, deny, deny. Double down on economic growth and hope innovation follows.

Of course, "hope and dreams" sells. Admitting defeat wouldn't get you elected. The rhetoric is adjusted accordingly.

hbt··on The World in 2076
The anti-innovation backlash is the most likely thing to happen.

Today, politicians are winning the populace by lamenting on unfair trade deals, globalism and foreigners taking jobs. Those jobs are not coming back, if they are, certainly not to humans.

We will see a growing class of people who are economically useless. (read Professor Yuval Noah Harari new book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homo_Deus:_A_Brief_History_of_... ) And, no, the answer is not basic income. It's intelligence augmentation.

Intelligence is the only valuable currency nowadays and we are not acquiring enough of it fast enough compared to the machines.

Our only tool for intelligence augmentation is still education. Not good enough at all. It's already impossible to keep up; let alone learn something from scratch at a late stage in life and be expected to contribute something significant enough to derive long term economic advantage that can't be taken by a machine or globalists.

I think all other issues will fix themselves or reach a natural equilibrium (overpopulation, climate change etc.). But lack of intelligence is our doom.

hbt··on Lessons learnt from monetising my Chrome Extension
Does limited functionality work instead of free trial?

i.e here are 2 out of 5 features. Upgrade to PRO to get the other 3.

The 2 features providing basic functionality.

I realize this is difficult in your situation since it is more a 1 feature extension but I'd be curious if that strategy works.

Thanks

hbt··on Software Developers: how to get a raise without changing jobs
Yes, the classic "just world hypothesis" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-world_hypothesis

If you "work harder", you will be compensated fairly. Of course, "work harder" is overrated now that work doesn't involve physical labor. "Work harder" has been replaced by "create more value".

The expectation is after you create more value for the owners, you will be compensated fairly. If you believe that, go talk to engineers who worked on startups as early employees and got screwed by investors, founders, managers etc.

Why? For many reasons:

- the owners didn't think you could do any damage to their reputation and impact hiring prospects after they screwed you

- after the company grew, you were now interchangeable

- needed to raise more money and dilute your shares

- you were no longer as valuable to the next stage of the company

- They didn't believe you could replicate the value you created again

etc.

Of course, founders, investors and friends stick around regardless of the stage of the company or the value of their contribution. Why? Because they OWN it, they have power.

Do not confuse performance for power. The only time I got a significant raise (I mean 4X the pay) is when I had significant leverage. Opportunism, self interest and politics rule business.

People are not gonna give you more money if they can avoid it.

hbt··on Canada’s federal court rules intelligence service bulk data collection illegal
Here are your choices:

* educate yourself and grow your self reliance to understand & use these technologies and look for your interests

* delegate the work to experts, trust authorities and hope they have your best interest

* isolate yourself from technology and pay the economic/social price.

Your Freedom takes work. You can't delegate it. There will always be a conflict between individual freedom and social safety.

hbt··on Canada’s federal court rules intelligence service bulk data collection illegal
You'd have to be a fool to trust lawmakers or law enforcement with your data and privacy by this point.

They will always find some loophole in the language. Illegal to collect but not illegal to access what has been collected by allies (aka the Five Eyes).

Just encrypt everything, use VPNs and whatever you push in plain/text may as well be public.

Trust open technologies you understand, not politicians.

hbt··on Panama: The Hidden Trillions
Keeping the population in line by fattening them up and distracting them only works if they believe in something bigger than themselves.

With the lack of community and the focus on individual and the self, people will not be fulfilled if they know someone else is doing so much better.

It's the classic monkey experiment with cucumbers. If all monkeys get cucumbers, they are all okay with it. If one monkey gets a cherry while the other gets a cucumber, the cucumber monkey feels it's unfair and gets angry.

You can keep humans in shitty conditions if they believe in something bigger than themselves. That the shitty conditions are justified and therefore fair.

hbt··on Drakon: a visual language for specifications from the Russian space program
This is great work. FYI spacex uses LabView http://www.ni.com/labview/ (amongst other stuff)

I wonder if you could use annotations to manage the visuals e.g http://drakon-editor.sourceforge.net/folder-night.png You'd have an inline annotation to separate the code blocks and generate the visuals so you don't have to maintain/update two places. Any tool that does that?

Also, integrating different level of complexity using system 1,2,3 (from https://www.amazon.ca/Software-Requirements-3rd-Karl-Wiegers...) to represent user flow diagram in addition to flow charts.

Flow charts get confusing after some complexity. Useless if you want to represent multiple actors + messages. Systems/sub-systems view.

There is a tendency to think of visual programming as an all or nothing. Either we have all text or all visual. As long as it is "Write once, update everywhere", visual tools can be useful in navigating new code bases, obtaining insights and quickly understanding a piece of code.

The problem though is they often require maitenance and get out of date with reality (even if it is comments/annotations)

hbt··on Implication of sabotage adds intrigue to SpaceX investigation
ULA has a 100% success rate. http://www.space.com/30738-united-launch-alliance-100th-rock...

Why does spacex have occasional failures? Do they run their experiments with customers cargos?

Note: I know nothing of the space industry.

hbt··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
He wrote on salary negotiation and creating value as a consultant + boosting his rate.

Is that what you are referring to by pay-per-performance for engineers?

hbt··on 90 Cents of Every 'Pay-For-Performance' Dollar for CEOs Are Paid for Luck
On a related note, is there any successful pay for performance scheme for engineers?

Pay-per-performance is well established in sales and marketing. Even when the sales/marketing strategy requires a large team to implement, the spoils go to the top.

It seems the only time engineers get properly compensated for the value they create is when it is so obvious and the owners can't get away with stiffing them.

Startups are well known for stiffing engineers because the teams are small, there are no repercussions and the founders don't have much of reputation to begin with. It's harder in bigger companies since it sends the wrong message to others in the company and destroys your reputation.

Maybe there is no such thing as fair compensation. Just get leverage and negotiate or obtain a position of power (authority) within the company.

hbt··on Inside the Chicago Police Department’s secret budget
I do blame them.

You're in a cage. They are outside the cage. You ask. They have no incentive to comply. The power dynamics are not in your favor and that's why they can treat you poorly and get away with it.

Poor treatment in jails/prison helps no one. Everyone who goes to jail is not a cop-killer or wife beater. Even those people do not deserve poor treatment.

I get it. It's easier to generalize then treat each individual as a special snowflake. However, some people would rather kill themselves than go to prison. This also makes the job of police officer more dangerous if people would rather die than surrender knowing all that awaits for them is torture (sleep deprivation, disgusting food, forced labor, isolation, confined spaces, rape etc.).

We do not treat criminals as human beings. We offer them no path to be rehabilitated. They cannot vote, cannot get jobs easily and are social outcasts. You'd be surprised by the amount of people who committed non-violent, victimless crimes and had their lives ruined forever by this broken system.

I understand the police officer is not exactly a social worker. They are a cog in the system but they are not helping, not attempting to improve/change the system and are to blame (along with prosecutor, the justice system and authorities in general).

It boils down to one thing: They have POWER and you don't. They play a role in maintaining the status quo, you don't. Therefore, they are to blame.

Sorry for the rant, it boils my blood when people with no power make excuses for the poor treatment they received from people with actual power.

hbt··on Getting things done
Past a certain level of income, the number of things you can directly buy that will make a significant improvement in your life are extremely rare.

You're back to square 1 and you need to work to improve your life. The technology, products and services simply do not exist.

Unless you are willing to readjust your world view, attitude and ambition to be fine with stagnation (i.e "living life"); you will feel dissatisfied.

hbt··on Getting things done
One thing the post doesn't cover is a defeatist attitude or a poor outlook on life. Basically, depression (regardless of the reason).

Depression doesn't need to paralyze you. You can be productive when depressed but it is often followed by a pattern of self destructive behavior.

I used to never understand why addicts would self destroy. They would get a job, finally get their lives together and then fuck it up.

Long term goals can feel pointless when you believe that you are insignificant and your life is meaningless. What's the point of improving my life by X factor if I'm gonna be dead anyway? What's the point of building this if it will be replaced by technology Y in Z years? What's the point of discovering this if eventually someone else will? What's the point if the Universe....

That type of thinking about the far future often results in defeatism.

In reality, you wake up the next day, having made no progress, your life is the same as yesterday, it may have gotten worse if you overindulged in your addiction and now you feel like utter shit.

A positive outlook on life and a focus on improving now, on evaluating each activity as a return on investment and building a better version of yourself feels more serene than admitting defeat.

I think comfort leads to stagnation. The best work I've done is when I was in survival mode and completely dissatisfied with my life. Once I reach "normalcy", procrastination and self indulgence kick in unless I see a point behind a long term goal.

hbt··on Getting things done
The "why" is often summed as "will this make my life better and by how much?"

I agree that "grinding it out" doesn't apply to creative work. You can have a time block dedicated to writing and produce nothing because you feel the activity is pointless/meaningless.

If you don't see how the end result will make your life better, you will never make progress. Worse, you will get depressed by the meaninglessness of it all and be tempted to self sabotage existing efforts.

Long term goals are an existential crisis because every fiber in your body just wants to say "Fuck it", give up and indulge into immediate unfullfilling gratification.

Intentional self destructive behavior is pretty much any activity that says "Fuck you future self". Often, it requires reflection on your attitude and outlook on the future.

hbt··on Getting things done
One thing that helps is focusing on how this improves your life.

Even if all your writing does is clarify things in your head, that's progress. You are better because of it. Don't bother iterating and polishing the writing if you don't feel like it. Move to another post or write on the same subject again with a clear head.

Also, do not underestimate the quality of your work. It is often good enough for people who are not at your level.

There is so much work out there I now think is mediocre but used to believe was amazing/awesome/life-changing.

Making personal progress is more important than doing nothing and stagnating.

Good luck with your work ;-)
