the frightening part is although your father's record is available to the public, police officers who are caught lying while testifying get to seal the record.

in many jurisdictions, sealing a record is the equivalent of destroying it.

your crimes will haunt you forever because the system never forgets, meanwhile they simply go back to business like it never happened

hbt··on Show HN: Locust – “Git diff” over abstract syntax trees
I've been thinking about a similar tool in go that would use the call graph

it would show how many new/changed calls were made and also include basic info about new declarations

it would give a quick overview of changes and hidden side effects prior to commits thanks to go static analysis

hbt··on How I got the French Tech Visa to start my company in France
Yes, racism in Europe is due to nativism. It's not as bad as asian countries though.

Imagine if native americans were still around and you immigrated to the United States or Canada. Chances are the statues, official languages, culture (music etc.), food and mindset would be heavily influenced by the native american population.

Although English/French/Spanish might be accepted languages, it would be a constant fight and constant reminders that you kinda don't belong here and you have to "integrate" i.e give up parts of your culture and who you are.

I don't know if multiculturalism is better than integration; there are advantages to having a diverse society but also a cohesive high trust society.

However, in France and most of Europe, no matter how much you integrate you will never be "native". Or in French, "Francais de souche". Your skin color, your last name, your accent will stick out and you will be treated differently.

Again, not like in Asia where you might as well be a second/third class citizen. But enough, to make you feel like you don't belong and you're always a foreigner... no matter how much you "integrate".

hbt··on Git Repo of Police Brutality During the 2020 George Floyd Protests
When cops get to purge their own disciplinary records and keeping their misconduct secret; they don't get to be called 'heroes'.

They are a tool of social control only interested in the perception of truth, trust and transparency. Pushing whatever narrative serves their interests.

hbt··on Ask HN: What is the single top-priority software engineering problem?
interoperability: "the ability of computer systems or software to exchange and make use of information."

Emphasis on exchanging information between 2 unknown programs.

So much programming plumbing (parsing text etc.) to do just that.

So many hours wasted chasing API documentation to figure out how to call an incantation.

So many software features hidden away and inacessible unless used through a UI maze.

So much code sitting there unused and undiscoverable.

hbt··on Show HN: Statistical tool for analyzing a Git repository
I wrote https://github.com/hbt/git-forks-analysis to analyze a git repo and its forks.

I modified existing tools to scan all branches.

The most interesting tool is https://github.com/src-d/gitbase which turns your git repo into a database you can query. This is more effective than parsing git log output.

I keep a list of similar tools here https://github.com/hbt/git-forks-analysis#other-git-data-min...

Happy to add yours

hbt··on Dissatisfied with Docker
- start the container with docker run and run sleep 999

- then start your application with docker exec

you will have instant execution.

Only restart your container if the environment changes (new build etc.)

For development, mount your source code in readonly.

hbt··on It Takes More Than Mass Protests to Drive Change
leaders are targeted. their reputation is tarnished by the media and isolated / detained by police.

also a major lack of trust within the group prevents a leader from emerging in the first place

hbt··on In Japan, there's an industry devoted to cleaning up after people who died alone
in the West, children are delegated to third parties (often strangers, not family)

Several government programs act as a poor substitute for family support.

Lack of incentive, lack of community and an emphasis on individualism creates people like that.

hbt··on AI and Deep Learning in 2017 – A Year in Review
the fact this thread got over 100 points without a comment or discussion proves what I suspected.

most of us are observers when it comes to this tech. sure, there is some quick tutorial to build a "learning model" somewhere or read an article to grasp what is being discussed...

but when it comes to contributing something remotely significant, we got nothing. whether it is due to lack of resources (giant datasets and computing power) or lack of knowledge and experience to even theorize something plausible.

this is even more frustrating knowing how important of a role this tech will play in the future.

being a passive observer is not enough.

I'm looking forward to 2018 AI summary.

hbt··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
1) The VPN's IP will be used by more than one person. (i.e a pool)

2) use a VPN that has a reputation for not keeping logs and turning people over.

https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-comparison-chart/

hbt··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
All traffic is encrypted + goes through the VPN in a docker image with firewall configured to shutdown the moment the VPN disconnects.

The IP of the cloud VM is never exposed. Only the VPN's.

If you're worried about dropbox type surveillance, you store the data in an encrypted drive.

hbt··on I Know What You Download on BitTorrent
A good reminder to Dockerize + VPN

https://github.com/haugene/docker-transmission-openvpn

put that on any cloud vm and you have peace of mind + good internet speed.

hbt··on We Only Have Hours Left to Stop the NSA Expansion Bill
Violence is a proven effective tool and it is used as a last resort (to be considered justified). There is no denying people are feeling powerless and not represented.

Your method of protesting doesn't work if you care about the national debt, quantitative easing, inflation, interest rates, crony capitalism, the rent economy, the value of your money growing worthless day by day while the cost of living is artificially getting higher despite technological advances.

What do you do to address those issues? Not participate in the economy? Create your own currency, your own bank and somehow escape regulation? Vote?

They keep pushing people into a corner and expecting us to submit. Technological innovation (e.g cryptocurrencies, encrypted wallets, globalisation etc.) and violence are the only tools we have to fight back. Any other system (e.g voting) has been gamed to serve their interest or rendered useless (e.g protesting but don't be inconvenient)

Don't get me wrong, your vote still counts (in non gerrymandered districts) and I'm sure you can voice your opinion on gay marriage; but the stuff that actually matters, you are voiceless and expected to obey or die.

hbt··on Simplistic programming is underrated
The blog post barely gets into the idea of what simplicity means in programming.

If you have any interest in the topic, I recommend Rich Hickey talk "Simplicity matters" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rI8tNMsozo0

My personal favorite is: Living with complexity 2010 by Don Norman (Author of Design of everyday things)

hbt··on Give away your code, but never your time
Regarding PR and paying, people fork the code and make the changes they need. They send PRs to avoid merge conflicts in the future. i.e it is in your best interest to get your code merged.

You are not obligated to send PRs. You can fork and let it sit there.

Regarding community management, past a certain scale you should charge for it. People often feel entitled and will waste your time instead of reading doc. Majority of OSS projects rely on a handlful of individuals; often 1 or 2 people handling everything.

I completely understand the spirit of this.

OSS is not charity or altruism. Share your code out of self interest (e.g contributions, forks, bug detection etc.) If you get nothing out of it, unsubscribe from notifications.

You don't owe people your time, skills, energy.

hbt··on Functions as a Service: Serverless Framework for Docker and Kubernetes
at the moment. we lack the software for proper faas orchestration

I do believe with docker faas rest swagger, we will have a solution which allows you to write a function, define its input and output with a schema like swagger, define its dependencies with docker, expose it as a service rest, call at scale with faas.

this also makes API discovery and reliability much easier

hbt··on Functions as a Service: Serverless Framework for Docker and Kubernetes
distributed computing

by having a function with a rest API in a container, you can scale it on demand with no infrastructure management

hbt··on Functions as a Service: Serverless Framework for Docker and Kubernetes
this is pretty cool. you can also convert it to swagger and restify your function.

the main benefit is annotations in comments

hbt··on Small functions considered harmful
>>> If you have to spend effort into looking at a fragment of code to figure out what it’s doing, then you should extract it into a function and name the function after that “what”.

Fowler is right about smaller functions and OP misinterpreted his statement.

This is what Fowler means https://gist.github.com/hbt/3e71146454a2d6388338af1d76394a13

Abstract the fragment of code in a function, keep it within the function until you need it elsewhere and do not pollute needlessly the API with functions that are poorly named and used one time only.

hbt··on McClure steps back at 500Startups after internal sexual misconduct investigation
Relationships with a power differential are common in the US too.

Women generally date up. This is especially common within professions with a high status since it is difficult to meet someone equal/better. View https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2016-who-marries-whom/

People generally are poor at reading others and end up pushing too far or getting offended easily (not referring to this case)

What's more likely to happen is what has been highlighted in the "sex partition" - https://www.amazon.com/Sex-Office-Partition-Dividing-Workpla...

Men are more likely to create more barriers to protect themselves and prevent bad optics rather than walk on egg shells around women. This in turn limits opportunities for women (aka glass ceiling).

hbt··on Ask HN: Why does visual programming suck?
The problem with having 2 representations of the same piece of information is maintaining them in sync.

If we use text for specific and visual for abstraction, we still need to maintain both and there are no effective tools to do that without creating additional work.

hbt··on How Harvard Business School Has Reshaped American Capitalism
keep in mind this was written prior to behavioral economics or Neuro economics or study of cognition.

understanding why people make the decisions they do and how they all fit in a large system remains a work in progress.

we certainly know more now to simply call it the invisible hand

hbt··on How Harvard Business School Has Reshaped American Capitalism
your land is protected by a club.

instead of protecting it yourself, you delegated the job to the government.

libertarians will argue "why not delegate to a private company?"

because we all learned from past experience. it is better for one entity to have a monopoly on violence than multiple small organizations.
