hayyyyydos··on Stop Spotify Surveillance
Check out the start of the next paragraph

> Queer indie-punk musician and Fight for the Future director Evan Greer has released a new music video for the song “Surveillance Capitalism,” ahead of the release of the album Spotify is Surveillance.

That raised a red flag for me. Why is this person's gender identity in any way relevant to the issue at hand?

In the same way the text calls out emotion recognition software as "racist pseudoscience" (then linking to an article about facial recognition) - which doesn't have much at all to do with the patent.

Bought to you by the "Union of Musicians" - the same people who claim Spotify make "enormous profits" (I wouldn't call them enormous) and want 1 cent per play.

They want Spotify to pay them, but they also want to damage Spotify's reputation? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot

Further to that, check out the Union of Musicians' subcommittees [1] - there's a "Classical Music Accountability" subcommittee (classical music = white supremacy?)... and a Police Abolition committee, of course.

hayyyyydos··on Fuck Domainparkers
auDA really doesn't do much enforcement of this, at all. The policy might aswell not exist.

Not surprising, considering there are at least 4 auDA accredited registrars who specialise in domain parking[1], which is (allegedly) against the rules.

[1] https://www.auda.org.au/accredited-registrars - see drop.com.au, terrific.com.au, yexa.com.au, fabulous.com.au

Here are a few examples, all definitely parked domains - but auDA allows it:

television.com.au

bank.com.au

remotecontrols.com.au

modem.com.au

tweet.com.au

homephone.com.au

homepage.com.au (This domain is for sale, $80k)

It would be great if auDA enforced their policy...

hayyyyydos··on TP-Link Archer VR1600V V2 Super User Password Cracked
This is (kind of) a non-issue.

The hard coded su password only exists in the TPG (an Australian ISP) version of the VR1600v software. The main admin user is unable to set VOIP server details and authentication etc.

If you get a vanilla TP-Link VR1600v, you'll find there is no such hardcoded password, and the normal admin account has full access to VOIP and CWMP settings.

It's such an unusual concept to me that you guys still need to show insurance/registration documents when being pulled over.

Ditch the concept entirely, no need for proof of insurance - either in physical card or digital form.

hayyyyydos··on When you browse Instagram and find Tony Abbott's passport number
There is one, but it's on the homepage - take a look under the "about" heading at the bottom and go from there.... (assuming that's the puzzle that ASD figured out)

This looks like the same James Body from Dangerous Demos (ClueCon, Kamailio World, Astricon etc) - very fortunate to have an industry veteran like him as the chair of the parish council for a project like this!
hayyyyydos··on Show HN: Automatically Rename HEY's 'Imbox' to 'Inbox'
> How would you whitelist things in your regular IMAP client? Manually moving things to the IMAP Inbox and which then marks them as whitelisted somehow?

That's exactly how you'd do it, and the functionality definitely exists - all handled on the server side. See: learning spam from ham by dragging to/from the spam folder.

hayyyyydos··on UK phone number transfers between networks are handled through a Yahoo Group
Not transfers, but rather notifying the other carriers of new number range assignments so they can condition their switches to route them. Not as bad as it sounds.
hayyyyydos··on I just lost my wallet on the way home from work
Interesting that there's an 18 character limit. In Australia, with the NPP (equivalent to UK's Faster Payments), your description can be up to 280 characters including, of course, emoji.

Out of curiosity, does Faster Payments allow you to pay to any other identifier (email address, phone number), or only bank account number? More importantly... does it support emoji?

hayyyyydos··on Elon Musk Gambled Tesla to Save SolarCity
> Amusingly, the DeSol web site has a copyright date of 2023 on it.

It's a Wix website (which probably tells you a bit about the company) - many of them have Copyright 2023 on them[1]. It's a phenomenon I've noticed for a while, but never worked out why. If anyone knows the reason I'd love to know.

hayyyyydos··on Australian firm Meriton fined $3M for misleading consumers on TripAdvisor
> Why not penalize by percentage?

The ACCC usually does do it this way.

Some recent examples: https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/air-nz-penalised-15-mi... - Air NZ penalised $15m https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/iphone-and-ipad-misrep... - Apple fined $9m https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/domain-name-corp-and-d... - Domain Name Corp/Agency fined $1.95m

You'll see that most of these amounts are pretty close to the amount the companies made from the activities and scale with the size of their operations

Sure, height:auto can't be animated - but max-height:800px, for example, can be used to similar effect.
