hawk_··on Understanding Jane Street
> to make money over retail trades

You can call them vampire squid from hell but they don't exactly take money from retail, they tighten spreads for them if anything.

> Clustering of files by similarity using a similarity hash function.

Does that mean that I can store all those 100s of photos taken at slightly different angles, in an efficient way?

Fed's balance sheet has barely started contracting. This contraction cycle has a while to play out.
hawk_··on The trimodal nature of software salaries in the Netherlands and Europe (2021)
I am curious to see how this plays out with the coming recession (hiring freezes instituted already). I suspect that #3 segment will prove to be ephemeral - a result of fed's QE unlimited regime.
hawk_··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
Fair enough. How many startups/company websites clearly state what they are actually doing? The problem is particularly bad in B2B space where the descriptions are replete with buzzwords and don't convey anything more than "Lorem Ipsum"
hawk_··on Pigeon Towers: A Low-Tech Alternative to Synthetic Fertilizers (2016)
I'd phrase it as "reduce the number of mouths to feed". That way it could be achieved by reducing the amount of cattle grown for meat and we could eat more grains etc... ourselves instead of feeding those intermediaries.

> Latinx

It's hard to take anyone who uses this term seriously. Latinos can't even pronounce it or care for it.

Isn't success x% inspiration and [significantly larger than x]% perspiration? How does it matter if he achieves it through persistence. He is consistently able to build teams that deliver.

hawk_··on Show HN: World’s first £3 flat fee (0% FX markup) money transfer service
For transfer above a certain amount the .5% or whatever they charge still adds up.
hawk_··on Germany to Send Anti-Tank Weapons, 'Stinger' Missiles to Ukraine
What would be the fastest way to get these to Kyiv? Fly them to Warsaw or further east and then on road from there I imagine. Might still take a couple of days, hope that's not too late.

[Edit: Typo Kiev.]

hawk_··on Gas Embargo Would Hit Russia Hardest
Yielding to terrorists sets bad precedent. Where does it stop?
hawk_··on Putin orders Russian peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine's two breakaway regions
short termism there is the fear of losing elections due to a misinformed populace. we should have educated people instead and embraced nuclear as the stop gap for the next 100 years while we develop all kinds of other energy tech.
hawk_··on Putin orders Russian peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine's two breakaway regions
Isn't saying that energy sector won't be touched a few days before Putin's latest declaration showing our hand too much though.
hawk_··on Putin orders Russian peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine's two breakaway regions
Yep, one after another decision reeks of short termism. There's a dictator who believes the world as some zero sum system right at our borders and we are burying our heads in sand.
hawk_··on Putin orders Russian peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine's two breakaway regions
What's disappointing is the response of european leaders so far. They have prepared a sanctions package against Russia which won't include anything in the energy sector! If not energy then what, Matryoshka dolls? and we are supposed to take them seriously :-(

It's great to be able to pull "bonkers TC" and not feel fulfilled than to not pull that TC and still feel a void.

"All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind".

And even finding quality volunteering opportinities has been difficult. There's all kind of parasitic behaviour when free money or labor is on offer.

> other viable systems programming languages simply did not exist (now you at least have Rust as a possible contender).

(I have no horse in this race) But if a big part of their complaint is compile times, Rust may not be the best example of a contender.

So what if they freeze during those 45 minutes? How representative is that scenario for what most devs do?

hawk_··on Why Brahmins lead Western firms but rarely Indian ones
It's more like a dictionary lookup[0] than some general pattern. Also there are many regional variations. So if you have come across a particular lastname before you happen to know they are brahmin.
