hawk_··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
This can go wrong in either direction. If you brush your teeth and have milk shortly after, the fluoride binds to the calcium in milk and goes to your belly instead of staying with your teeth protecting them. On the other hand if you have orange juice or similar (acidic) and then brush your teeth, say bye to your tooth enamel.
hawk_··on Determine durations with monotonic clocks if available
BTW on linux the equivalent is CLOCK_BOOTTIME - and the general point stands that you need to find something "steady" enough for your usecase. There is no absolutely monotonic clock in the universe ;-), that we know of, is there?
hawk_··on Study reveals average age at conception for men vs. women over past 250k years
Where's the paradox? Live births drive evolution afterall. Wouldn't such a massive survival difference start to show up in mate age preferences getting "coded" into our genes?
hawk_··on How Memory safety approaches speed up and slow down development velocity
Cleaners aren't deterministic, so that's meaningfully worse than rust's resource mgt. Java's try with resources cleanup only works if the resource is freed up before the callstack is unwound. Currently that's only viable for the most trivial of scenarios. Loom will make that applicable in more places but still not as widely applicable as a borrow checker/rc based deterministic resource management.
hawk_··on Meta Quest Pro – Bad AR Passthrough
Actual monitors are a pain to carry around when travelling so if a VR monitor could become portable that could help me carry my setup wherever I go.
hawk_··on OCaml 5.0 Multicore is out
Lightweight syntax is a pain to use for blind people. Glad OCaml hasn't fallen for that fad.
hawk_··on Rust front-end merged in GCC trunk
No borrow checking is effectively a dialect of Rust?
hawk_··on Ask HN: Those with money-making side projects, how did you come up with the idea?
That's brilliant! How do you advertise/let others discover your product?
hawk_··on Ask HN: Those with money-making side projects, how did you come up with the idea?
Interesting. How do potential users discover this?
hawk_··on I gave ChatGPT the 117 question, eight dimensional PolitiScales test
"Reality has a well known liberal bias."
hawk_··on Tell HN: The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is an excellent MacBook replacement
LG Gram series has a few light ones, have been using linux mint xfce4 on one for daily dev.
hawk_··on Jeffrey Epstein documents to be unsealed, potentially revealing acquaintances
Bill Clinton couldn't keep a blowjob secret while being a sitting president. I doubt this is any easier to hide.
hawk_··on Jeffrey Epstein documents to be unsealed, potentially revealing acquaintances
> but just isn't very likely.

He "took his own life" under very suspect circumstances. I wouldn't put that down as isn't very likely.

hawk_··on HN Who is hiring job posts over time
I see. And how did you find the company websites? The reason I ask is could the type of companies in your filter be the ones just not doing quality work? And interestingly my acquaintance is having the opposite problem where they are willing to train but are having to work very hard to find good CS grads in the EU.
hawk_··on HN Who is hiring job posts over time
Where did you look for jobs in the EU - as in which message boards/websites etc...?
hawk_··on Ask HN: How's the job hunt going? (For those laid off)
Nice. What's the compensation range for this role in Remote (EMEA) or AMS? https://getstream.io/careers/job/4617451003/
hawk_··on I am a quite good bad programmer
There's no theoretical way for a hash map to work without storing the key - the reason for that is hash collisions in presence of which you do need to run equality comparison with stored keys otherwise you would overwrite data just because of hash clashes.
hawk_··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2022)
Any salary ranges at hand?
hawk_··on Exploring the richness and variety of letters sent to the East India Company
The video linked by parent is light on details. This one has more details if anyone's interested (A debate on the empire but many of the things apply to EIC) https://youtu.be/f7CW7S0zxv4
hawk_··on I tried starting a manufacturing unit in India (2020)
That sounds awful. Curious to hear if you were able to avoid GST payments in later years as should be the case for exports.
hawk_··on Test scores are not irrelevant
It's clear they mean that the barrier to entry was available to anyone. That doesn't mean that anyone has the capacity to understand and apply the contents of the text.
hawk_··on Memories: Edinburgh ML to Standard ML
What's the FFI overhead like? And can you pass SML function pointers into C code as callbacks?
hawk_··on The era of fast, cheap genome sequencing is here
What you do when you find something out is still a choice. If that backpain isn't getting in the way of most of your lifestyle then the risks of a surgery aren't justified. A lump in the pancreas well I think most of us would be better served by finding that out earlier than later.
hawk_··on Virtual Threads: New Foundations for High-Scale Java Applications
Stacks in idiomatic Java aren't usually that deep (pointers instead of in place values) so this isn't that big of a deal, unlike say in C++.
hawk_··on A 14kb page can load much faster than a 15kb page
> break the TCP standard

Oh ok, but then is it really breaking the standard as OP claims?

hawk_··on A 14kb page can load much faster than a 15kb page
How do they do that? Do they use some nonstandard tcp stack?
hawk_··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
I would let the same team of "rock solid senior engineers" be the judge of that. They seem to think it mattered significantly enough.
hawk_··on Tell HN: Unpaid home assignments are not ok
The quotes on incompetent was missing. If someone's set at a place and proves to be "incompetent" in another setting their family is better off if they never switched the job in the first place. Hiring someone with 5/10+ years of experience for example and firing them after trial is a worse outcome for most people than not having had them make the switch in the first place if it was avoidable.
hawk_··on Tell HN: Unpaid home assignments are not ok
Good luck hiring and then firing incompentent people (and there are many such "programmers") at scale. At least by making interviews hard you're not putting families at risk which you would by hiring people to fire them with pretty high odds.
hawk_··on TruffleC: A C implementation on top of JVM (2014)
> And frankly I don't understand the hate people have against Java.

There are two kinds of programming languages : ones that people complain about and ones that no one uses.
