hawk_··on C Is Not a Low-level Language (2018)
> To some extent, just sitting down for a year to learn modern assembler and starting from the very, very bottom once again to build a high level language, rather than starting with C and building "C, but ..."

Right so build a 'union' of what's available and somehow try to fit it in a unified model. I was hoping there was at least some theoretical PL answer of a unified model. But can't be because all manufacturers and industry sub-groups are doing their own thing.

> assembler

Yes that's definitely a cop out.

hawk_··on C Is Not a Low-level Language (2018)
What language(s) in your opinion have the right low-level where the access to the real machine doesn't feel foreign?
hawk_··on India’s pickle people: Decades-old culinary heirlooms, nostalgia
> The last process requires special hands if you wanted your pickle to last a few years.

Is that some code word for hygiene? I seem to remember that the concept of hygiene for making achaar (and for other kitchen matters) was codified in religious practices in my family/community.

Not OP, but would be great to have it working on Linux. How can one help?
hawk_··on Is there a fifth fundamental force of nature?
That's not a fundamental force and the insinuation made me dislike the otherwise nice movie, Interstellar.

I can confirm that it was the same at least ~6 years ago when I went through the same.
hawk_··on Serverless to monolith – Should serverless lovers be worried?
Resume driven development.

And on the flipside - One of the funniest justifications I have heard for companies using new fangled untried tech is to attract talent - no one wants to work on boring tech apparently for the fear of being outdated.

Any sources for this claim?

hawk_··on Flunct: Well-typed, fluent APIs in SML
Issues like this and a few older ones give me a pause. https://github.com/MLton/mlton/issues/473

Is there sufficient use of MLTon amd64 backend out there to consider it mature? or Do people prefer the LLVM or C backend instead in general?

hawk_··on Flunct: Well-typed, fluent APIs in SML
What's an industrial strength toolchain that one could use for SML today? Compiler, package manager, ide etc... that integrate well.
hawk_··on Making C++ safe without borrow checking, reference counting, or tracing GC
My idea is to use your solution to solve the halting problem.
hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
> We still rescue them

We still rescue them. I never argued against rescuing them.

hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
Which of the victims asked those planes to be sent their way?
hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
Yes well you're paying through your taxes at least (assuming you are a tax resident in the jurisdictions involved)
hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
The grown ups involved in that who didn't pay heed to warnings would be reckless. We still rescue them but we can charge those who can pay for it.
hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
Yes I get the training aspect. My point was around charging them for this. There are other such rescue missions where our brave men and women risk their lives because of reckless behavior of some. We should at least have such reckless actors take a bigger burden where possible.
hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
Of course we'd want that. But here's a rich CEO who fired safety whistleblower. Why take all that burden? A bunch of rich people who were lost at sea - we could charge all of their estates for this.
hawk_··on Debris found came from missing Titan sub, says friend of passengers
I am curious how we (the society) justify the shared costs incurred in searching for people involved in such a reckless mission.

Got it. I will try to leverage the synergies between Latin and English ex post.
hawk_··on A guide for people who want to self-study the basics of computer science
I have been seeing more and more usage of 'ex post' and 'ex ante' lately. What do they convey that isn't conveyed by 'after' and 'before'?

hawk_··on Reddit is OpenAI’s moat
ChatGPT like AI is the natural next step in the arms race of SEO vs Search. Right now is a mechanism to fight SEO. It will continue to work for a few years.
hawk_··on Zig language server and cancellation
I think that was meant in a very narrow sense comparing to SQL. In SQL the columns being selected go before the the table name so the IDE can't suggest a set of valid columns. In LINQ the order is flipped. But other than that there's no grand language design there to support tooling.
