I guess West Coast shipping from China is much cheaper

haunter··on Upcoming Changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming
>Beginning in November, we’re changing how cloud gaming is included with XBOX Game Pass.

>Game Pass plans will include a set number of cloud gaming hours each month:

- Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours

- Game Pass Premium: 10 hours

- Game Pass Essential: 5 hours

RIP. Imagine Netflix had a limit. You can only watch 2 films each month but you can pay for more...

haunter··on Audacity 4.0
They haven't

Just go the main homepage and there is a banner which leads you to buy the latest plugin

But hontestly nothing wrong with that imo

There is only one actively maintained fork https://tenacityaudio.org/

>Paint .NET-on-WINE has never been possible because of Direct2D, which WINE has really struggled with (for good reasons).

>So like ... why not reimplement Direct2D-in-Paint .NET? Remove the dependency on WINE completely. Clean room reverse engineering ...

>Thanks to Claude Code, it's now a reality. More story in the link above.

>It's buggy and slow, but real progress is being made.

>And I have no idea when/if this will be "production ready" or "supported" or even "good enough." Maybe next year, maybe next month, maybe 2035.

>Claude made more progress on this in 3 weeks than we've seen in the 12 years since PDN started using Direct2D in 2014.

>This isn't to talk down to the WINE folks, btw. Direct2D has a really complicated effects system, and probably only PDN really uses it, so the ROI was very low.

>AI doesn't care. And it doesn't get tired. And this is the perfect task for it: it already has the design (D2D's docs and API), and it already has a known-good implementation of it and an app to test against and bang its head against.

>So that's what it did: it banged its head against d2d1.dll and paintdotnet.exe for about 3 weeks until it was able to boot up PDN. In WINE. For real.

>Here's PDN on .NET 10 win-x64, in WINE 11.14-dev, on Ubuntu, in WSL2, on Windows 11. And yes it works on real Linux too.

And the company behind Nexus:

>We acquire. We amplify. We conquer.

https://www.wearechosen.io/

lmao good luck.

Love how the guy was running the site alone becaue he couldn’t “trust anyone else” and ended up selling to a company like this.

Though SteamDB is not irreplacebale at all, it’s running on the Steam Web API so not something super secret stuff.

haunter··on Notes on Private Trackers
In Hungary the biggest private tracker, which is a vocation to use here, solved this by abolishing the ratio system. When you download something you have to seed it for a net 48 hours inside 1 month OR until you seed it back to 1.0 ratio. In each month you can download 10 torrents w/o following this rule. There is no regular ratio system, no freelech torrents etc.

385k users, 750k torrents, 2,6 petabyte of data, 8.6m seeders out of 9.1m connections. Simple as that. https://files.catbox.moe/ogcrpl.png

haunter··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
Mind you Valve has done equal amount of bad as well by inventing the whole battle pass system and thus bringing even more FOMO to games, and making unregulated gambling available to millions which is still going strong and surprisingly no one cares about it. There are some lawsuits here and there but they focus on the lootbox gacha element and not the whole gambling market running on the Steam API

Valve could shut it down any single day just by disabling trading but hey, that doesn't let you buy a 110m long superyacht (; https://www.yachtcharterfleet.com/luxury-charter-yacht-53601...

haunter··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
The DHT network picked it up already so the magnet link is enough. At this point it will be available forever (as long as there are seeders)

haunter··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
Yeah the long forgotten Steam release of League of Legends is also in the files (it was only available for like 5 months)

Might not be the most interesting game in the leak but old versions of live service games are almost impossible to come by

https://steamdb.info/app/20590/

Downloaded it to extract all the old assets but it still needs an encrypted depot key

>error!! -- extract: missing depot key!, pass --key if you know it though

Some people reported that "--key 0000000000000000" or "--key 0" works on some depots... well not here

haunter··on The Internet Is Kind of a Predatory Cesspit Now
I follow reddit through RSS, at least that still works but probably that would be the final nail in the coffin for me. There are some really good subs out there and there is no replacements of those on the open internet. Maybe on Discord but I don't really like to use to that for anything else besides voice chat.

Suica works virtually everywhere https://www.jreast.co.jp/multi/suicamoney/shop.html

haunter··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
tbh if you only stay in Tokyo then the combined Tokyo subway pass (Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway) is the best all around deal, you don't need anything else. ¥2000 for 72 hours
haunter··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
The best thing that you can add a Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, or TOICA card anytime to your Apple Wallet. You don't even have to be Japan. Just add transit pass and that's all, when you are there you can start using it instantly. But it works with a lot of cards all around the world (Hong Kong Octopus, Korea Tmoney, SF Clipper etc.) it's in the Wallet app itself.
haunter··on Xcancel and Nitter have been taken down
Unbeatable (just like reddit) if you want live sport replays. /r/soccer uploads goals before it happens on the broadcast I watch on my TV

Also the Asian community (Korea, Japan etc) is incredibly strong on Twitter. They don't really care about the whole politics around the platform.

haunter··on Worst-case glacial lake flood scenarios in a transboundary Himalayan basin 2022
The Scablands were terraformed by a series of GLOFs (Glacial lake outburst flood) like this when deglaciation started at the end of the last ice age. Just imagine it on a thousand times bigger scale

>During the last deglaciation that followed the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, geologists estimate that a cycle of flooding and reformation of the lake lasted an average of 55 years and that the floods occurred dozens of times over the 2,000 years between 15,000 and 13,000 years ago. U.S. Geological Survey hydrologist Jim O'Connor and Spain's Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales scientist Gerardo Benito have found evidence of at least twenty-five massive floods, the largest discharging about 10 cubic kilometers per hour (2.7 million m³/s, 13 times that of the Amazon River).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channeled_Scablands

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missoula_floods

Also it's interesting if you start reading about Native American flood stories, these were not just tales or legends but telling actual historic events that the ancestors experienced.

See I thought if IPFS was picked up by the piracy scene (some bigger private trackers for example) then it probably would have been more successful. Alas I haven't seen it outside of libgen and even there I thought it was a backup option only.

If I were 17 again I'd prepare to go for volunteering overseas after high school for 1-2 years (plenty of free options in the EU where you might only need to cover the plane ticket). See the world, you learn a new language, help others and then think about what you want to do.

haunter··on Sydney Marathon medal mistakenly depicts Munich stadium
Most of the NPB teams are corporate owned and named

- Chunichi Dragons > Chunichi Shimbun (news corporation)

- Hanshin Tigers > Hanshin Electric Railway

- Tokyo Yakult Swallows > Yakult Honsha (yes, the probiotic milk beverage company)

- Yokohama DeNA BayStars > DeNA (ecommerce/mobile games/online services)

- Yomiuri Giants > Yomiuri Shimbun (media conglomerate)

- Chiba Lotte Marines > Lotte Holdings (related to the South Korean Lotte Corporation mostly known for their confectionery and ice creams)

- Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks > SoftBank (I think everyone knows them on HN)

- Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters > Nippon Ham (food processing)

- Orix Buffaloes > Orix (investment banking)

- Saitama Seibu Lions > Seibu Railway

- Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles > Rakuten (I think everyone knows them on HN)

But that's not a Japanese only thing, the Korean (KBO) and Taiwanese (CPBL) baseball leagues are the same

Kia Tigers, KT Wiz, LG Twins, Lotte Giants, Samsung Lions

CTBC Brothers, Rakuten Monkeys, Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions, Fubon Guardians

And not even a baseball thing only the football teams in the region are the same
