hauget··on Raspberry Pi touch display
Likewise. I'd also LOVE something like a cheaper/smaller version of Sony's Digital Paper to replace my notepads/sketchbooks. SIDE NOTE: I keep a Thinkpad x220 with a retrofitted IPS display and a 9cell battery for dedicated writing/programming. It's got fantastic viewing angles, an amazing keyboard and 10hrs+ battery life! You can find great deals for a used x220/x230 (and its IPS display) on ebay. Worth every penny!
hauget··on Asia's smartphone addiction
I didn't realize how bad it's gotten until I saw a guy texting WHILE DRIVING HIS SCOOTER!
hauget··on John Carmack's son's game in Racket
Man I wish I'd had this kind of experiences when I was his age... WELL DONE to both father and son!
hauget··on Ask HN: Recommend books for a software developer opening a business
I'd recommend checking out Joel Spolsky's Reading List: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/FogCreekMBACurriculum... You might want to start with Guy Kawasaki's "Art of the Start" and Josh Kaufman's very useful "The Personal MBA"
hauget··on Up in the Air: Escaping from East Germany
Reminds me of the story of German actor Thomas Kretschmann (you might know him from playing Baron von Strucker in Avengers: Age of Ultron & Captain America: Winter Soldier). From his Wikipedia page: "At the age of 19, he fled East Germany and began a month-long trek to West Germany to escape the East German state. During this trek, part of his finger was lost but surgically reattached. Kretschmann crossed four borders (Hungary, Yugoslavia, Austria) with nothing other than his passport and the equivalent of $100 in his possession." Pretty incredible!
hauget··on How to search for a commit message in GitHub?

hauget··on Dear Google Mail Team
Likewise.
hauget··on Hipster Sound – Coffee shop booster
Just discovered pink noise because of you and my mind is blown! It's very calming and hypnotic!
hauget··on 7 Rejections
"It's not like they get rejected and keep selling that one book they just wrote." (1) just because you're selling doesn't mean you're making profit. (2) Airbnb wasn't profitable when they were getting rejected, so in a sense "they kept writing". Hell, they even sold cereal boxes to stay afloat before Ycombinator picked them up! https://www.airbnb.com/obamaos
hauget··on 7 Rejections
Reminds me of Stephen King's rejection slips: "By the time I was fourteen the nail in my wall would no longer support the weight of the rejection slips impaled upon it. I replaced the nail with a spike and went on writing.”

Like Guy Kawasaki once said, "Don´t Let The Bozos Grind You Down".

hauget··on YouTube Map Explorer
Would be awesome if you could switch videos (like tv channels) with your arrow keys once a location has been clicked. Other than that, GREAT mashup!

damn GEMA...
hauget··on Philanthropy for Hackers
Of possible interest: Students Helping Honduras http://ceciskids.org Organization takes kids off the streets of one of the most dangerous countries in the world (highest murder rate according to UN report released in 2014; ~90.4 homicides per 100,000 people) and gives them a home, proper food and education.

Also, org. is always looking for teacher volunteers. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone whom you think might be interested in helping. Cheers!

Disclosure: I was born in Honduras and am a sponsor/donor

hauget··on Final Fantasy 7 remake coming to PlayStation 4
"And Shenmue 3 beats FFVII anytime because it's a new game, not a remake". So you think the remake won't have any new content? Seriously? How about we wait until the games come out before declaring which is "better".
hauget··on Final Fantasy 7 remake coming to PlayStation 4
This game helped me through some rough times growing up. Hopefully it will live up to its name.
hauget··on How a keyboard changed what I look for in an editor
I LOVE my Sculpt Ergonomic keyboard! Have mixed feelings about the mouse though (I still haven't found a way to use the back button on it with my Mac). It would be perfect if Microsoft found a way to put a Thinkpad's track point into it!

On the off chance, has anyone found a good carrying bag for the Sculpt Ergonomic keyboard?

hauget··on How a keyboard changed what I look for in an editor
I'm cringing at the weight... 5.4lbs?! A Surface3 is 1.76lbs!
hauget··on How a keyboard changed what I look for in an editor
I wish Apple would adopt the Surface approach and just give me/us a Mac tablet. Would be great to have a Mac where I can raise the screen up to eye level (with an embedded stand) and use with my own custom keyboard.
hauget··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
Tier option sounds smart. I think we have a similar system in place in Germany.
hauget··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
There has to be a balance between government regulation/oversight and market forces. Just look at what happened with Wallstreet. You think no intervention at all would have been a good idea there?

It's not about disallowing the other guy from doing stupid things and not being rich anymore, it's about not allowing someone to waste precious resources essential for human life, so as to not make it harder for others in need to have access (at accessible and fair prices) to said resources in the future.

hauget··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
EXACTLY. Governments and other non-market forces need to regulate and step-in when market forces fail to regulate themselves.
hauget··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
Even when those resources could be bought by someone who will waste them? We're not talking about something like gold here, we're talking about a resource that is essential for human life. Would you really want someone who's wealthier than you to buy all the water around you just because they can?
hauget··on California Announces Restrictions on Water Use by Farmers
Water is a scarce resource in this case. You don't exactly let the "wealthy" buy off everything they can just because. Scarce resources need to be regulated my friend.
hauget··on Oculus Rift
It was mentioned in the keynote event today that the headphones were detachable.
hauget··on Ex-BlackBerry Co-CEO Talks Publicly
If only they would have brought BBM to iOS, Android and the rest of the platforms...
hauget··on Ex-BlackBerry Co-CEO Talks Publicly
Here's how I think they failed:

1) They should have embraced a decent appstore and given developers the proper tools to not just build great apps, but also make money (same thing happened to Nokia)

2) Yes, they rushed production of the Storm. They should have NOT tried to make BB OS more iPhone/Android like and focused more on #1

BB hardware, security and power efficiency is where BB is king. I really wish RIM would disappear and merge with Windows Phone. Nokia/BB HW + WinOS/Android would be a killer combination.

hauget··on Ask HN: Managing and sharing personal health records?
Can I request digital records from them in case I move outside the US? Or will each individual have to scan/classify data on their own?
hauget··on libimobiledevice – A cross-platform library to communicate with iOS devices
Can you be more specific? You can use 'idevicesyslog' to view onscreen logs. You can also use commands like 'idevicediagnostics' to retrieve state information (e.g. power cycles of the battery) and 'idevicecrashreports' for crash data.
hauget··on Welcome to America: Here's Your Linux Computer
Couple of things:

1. Your particular computing experience vastly depends on what type of connectivity you have access to. Some people, for example, don't even have access to broadband.

2. Computing needs vary from person to person. For example, using spreadsheets for financial analysis isn't ideal on Google Spreadsheets, not because it's impossible but because a lot of plugins tie into Excel.

Now, I'm not saying most things we do now on a more powerful offline/desktop won't ever be eclipsed by their online counterparts, it's just that we're not there YET.

I'm with you on the VR setup! Can't wait to strap on some VR goggles and do all my computing there!

hauget··on Can the Swiss Watchmaker Survive the Digital Age?
Wow. I just found out about the e-strap. Sadly I don't think Montblanc will get it right unless developers embrace it. This is exactly the kind of innovation watchmakers should embrace though! I'd love to keep wearing my trusty G-Shock while taking advantage of everything smartwatches/fitness trackers have to offer.
