hatradiowigwam··on Music Theory for Programmers
I can't possibly agree loudly enough with this recommendation. I started with Hal Leonard method classical guitar books(1 & 2) and that was one thing...great books, but nothing compared to Absolutely Understand Guitar. That guy teaches and explains music theory in a way so effective it's not even comparable to other systems. Fantastic teacher, fantastic material, nothing but praise for Scotty West's music program.
hatradiowigwam··on Audacity 4.0
I'm not sure what you are talking about wrt guitar and standard notation. Finger (PIMA) indication, staccato/legato, vibrato, tremolo, slurs, hammer, pulls, etc...it's all there. I don't see as much notation around hammer/pull as a classical player, but pick up a classical guitar music book sometime...you'll find that everything (guitar-related) you mentioned needing to be included, is already included.
hatradiowigwam··on Suspecting AI cheating, Ivy League prof ordered in-person final; scores fell 50%
> How do we do that in tech? Hell if I know, maybe a proctored written exam, followed by an oral exam, then a project? But who knows.

Ever taken a Redhat exam - such as Red Hat Certified Engineer? That's the right model. It's a hand-on exam with arbitrary exam objectives you have to meet (by any means possible, there is more than one right way to achieve desired state). There is no internet, devices, or anything else to help you. People that pass allow you to make assumptions about them - for example... without stackoverflow, github, or the internet at all - this person can configure virtual hosts with nginx, firewall rules, host VMs, and administer network concepts(virtual switches, routing) between them. To do that without any GUI or internet available - it means you understand those concepts very well, and can implement them blindfolded.

Any RHCEs want to chime in?

I started to take your comment seriously until that line. You're avoiding leveling up and learning how to use the CLI. Whatever reason you are avoiding it for, understand that's what is at play here.

hatradiowigwam··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
People actively do that at work. My employer is a large [US] government financial entity, that likely holds your mortgage and the mortgage of people you know. Our profit this last quarter was publicly reported as 3.6 billion dollars. Most people will respond to any question with an OpenAI-generated answer, and you'll notice it most when 3 or 4 people in a teams chat all reply with a near-identical answer to a question you ask in the channel. I can't overstate how much AI is used here, or how zealous the leadership is in pushing us to use it for...everything.

Just wanted to point out that people are doing it at work, not getting fired, and this isn't some 2-bit business you haven't heard about.

hatradiowigwam··on Grand Theft Oil Futures: Insider traders keep making a killing at our expense
Welcome to the world of commodity trading. There is no SEC here, and this is business as usual. You can look at T&S to see this for yourself, but this is (like it or not) how this typically goes in commodity markets.

hatradiowigwam··on Adobe modifies hosts file to detect whether Creative Cloud is installed
Whether it's run as root/administrator or not - you can disable this behavior by setting the immutable flag on /etc/hosts. No user, including root, can write to a file with the immutable flag set(although root could _remove_ the attribute and then write).

That won't work... that will crash the price of [new] bonds, and more capitalized nations will buy the dip. You are operating under an assumption that the humans controlling a quantity of wealth enough to [quote] "crash the bonds market" make decisions based on principles. They don't - and if you compare history with a long term bond price chart then it will become apparent.
hatradiowigwam··on Ask HN: Who here is not working on web apps/server code?
I build ETL pipelines and all kinds of ad-hoc data processing software. These range from python projects to thousand-line shell scripts. The jobs run on machines above >1000 CPU core counts - what you would consider a mainframe or big iron.

Web stuff will burn you out. In my case, that happened 10+ years ago and I've never desired to go back [to building web products].

I spent alot of time in Fairbanks throughout 2006 and 2008, doing aerial surveys from plane. Fairbanks was a good airport to get stuck at, and you do meet some interesting non-traditional travelers. I've never met the guy in the article, but I've met a few bike/hike travelers there who were either moving horizontally or vertically across Alaska (no small feat at all), and I always thought it sounded like an adventure.

hatradiowigwam··on Tech megacaps lose $770B in value as Nasdaq suffers steepest drop since April
This is large but not a black swan by any means. If you trade NQ for several years or more these movements should not be surprising. Even at after the drop, it is (in my opinion) absurdly overvalued, and has been for 5+years. That said… the advice about the market remaining irrational longer than you can remain solvent applies.
hatradiowigwam··on Gold Prices Top $4k for First Time
Gold's price is only half the story here. The other half of the story is the value of US debt and US currency(USD). When they move in opposite directions - historically - /one/ of those instruments crashes. Choosing a side and putting your money behind it is dangerous, but also lucrative.
hatradiowigwam··on Gold Prices Top $4k for First Time
Four things are happening (and one of them is gold) that make a terrifying situation.

Facts:

- Gold has reached all time highs

- US debt (ie T-bills) selling at all time lows

- US equities are at all time highs

- USD falling day over day, month over month, year over year

All 4 of those facts cannot remain true indefinitely. The all time high equity prices are because it requires more USD(which is decreasing in value) to purchase them. Gold is at all time highs because USD is decreasing in value, and the flight to safety leads people to gold. US debt is falling in value because no one wants to buy it. At some point, equities will give up and crash, or gold will have to crash....and I don't think it's going to be gold crashing.

hatradiowigwam··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
Their "powerful and normally very vocal unions" are saying /nothing/, because the union's overall goal (by their messaging and their members messaging) is to increase and sustain additional hourly pay and increase the wages for said pay.

There is no effective system of checks and balances, or this entire discussion would be moot. Civilian solutions(like ICEBlock and friends) are a whimper of a response compared to the lethal and aggressive actions of these LEOs. Typically entrenched groups(like LEOs) can not be talked or reasoned with into changing their position. Those changes in position come from leverage (ie, your supervisor is replaced or leveraged with the threat of replacement), or direct aggression.

As an example, certain villains took issue with these systems and mounted their own lethal response. We are /still/ talking about these individuals because of how riotously effective their actions were at illuminating and mitigating the perceived problems. Whether your talking about Ted K, or Timmy M....they are examples of people who took action to correct a perceived problem. Right or wrong, every reader of this post knows who they are, what they did, and why they did it. Until something of equal magnitude opposes the authoritarian problem of the day(ie ICE), the status quo will continue.

hatradiowigwam··on Apple announces App Store changes in the EU
Us Americans have approximately zero to do with your rules or society. The idea of thinking Apple (or Microsoft, or Google) represents "Americans" is absurd. We don't vote for them to exist, we have no mechanism to stop their existence or oppose them in any way. We're as happy about EU forcing them to change as anyone else - our own attempts all failed. Jail break providers(for instance) were persecuted with legal process, gag orders, and seizure of their assets. Repairing iPhones as a side business? They put a stop to us doing that also.

I'm all in agreement with your emotional sentiment, but please understand "Americans" do /not/ like the same things you do not like. Our country just takes away our ability to do anything about it. Land of the free and whatnot...

hatradiowigwam··on Show HN: Every problem and solution in Beyond Cracking the Coding Interview
FWIW, the "principal" part implies a few things no matter which org... they should be able to manage a project from start to finish, mentor juniors, and make confident correct architectural decisions.

If you've ever hired a plumber or electrician, you might have gotten a crew of younger apprentices, maybe a journeyman, and an older "master" plumber or electrician. Most of the master's time is spent with the critical mechanical tasks, solving problems that occur, and directing those other tradesmen. The principal is the 1 person who can do _any_ of the other's job if they are unavailable. They are also the 1 person (and ideally the only 1 person) who makes "the plan" for how the work will proceed, and also decides when a project is complete.

The crucial difference (well, one of many?) between a principal-level engineer, and any type of management...is that the principal-level engineer should be able to do every junior engineer's job in a pinch - expertly, and with confidence and adapability to problems.

I think those were evil people doing evil things. Who calls the people who perpetrated these things "Christians"? If I am king, and direct my armies to slaughter another country's people because "<anything> cannot be tolerated by us, the Christians"....then I am a liar, and masquerading as something I am not. The people that did these things wanted to do them for one or more reasons, and none of those were because God told them to, or Christianity demanded it of them.
hatradiowigwam··on The Polymarket users betting on when Jesus will return
Religion (to me) is defined as a codified subset [or even superset] of beliefs, rituals, and culture.

The letters you speak of (penned by apostles of Jesus) are exactly as you describe. They were humans, trying to do what a divine being told them to do. It appears they went about it(at least partially) by writing letters. The passage I believe you are referring to, where Jesus instructs his disciples is:

> Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

This doesn't say to "spread religion", it literally tells them to teach and baptize all nations. They went and wrote letters, and here we are thousands of years later calling that "religion".

What is important to you? I see this conversation as attempting to make disciples of all nation. If it's successful for anyone(not you necessarily, maybe someone reading)...then hoo-ah! That's a win! If not, the instructions that preceded the passage you refer to say that I should "shake the dust from my feet", and leave the metaphorical house(s) that will not listen.

I don't know how we got from 0-50 A.D. to where we are now, regarding "religion", but I don't see even the most remote connection from the behavior of Jesus' disciples and their letter writing, to whatever the heck is going on in modern day.

Hey I don't know what works for everyone, but I know what works for me. I'm encouraging you to let it work for you, but that's a personal choice and I wouldn't force it on anyone.

I don't think God wants to "trick" anyone. I also don't believe there is any hard set of "rules" he applies to 100% of humanity without exception. Take little children for instance...tragedies happen every day, and they are too young to know what those rules are, or have a chance to follow them. Those children aren't destined for eternal torture - that would be cruel and heartless - and I don't believe God is cruel or heartless.

I apologize for coming off as an elitist jerk. I didn't realize it would be read that way, and it was not my intent at all. I'm not better than you, I don't /think/ I'm better than you, and I'm too inexperienced/ignorant/prideful to even be able to know what "better" is, much less which one of us it would apply to.

All my comments, posts, and intentions are that 1 person is positively influenced by them. Maybe they go on to influence someone else, and it spreads throughout people - I have no idea what will happen that is influenced by things like my post. However, I don't think my post is going to hurt anyone - my hope is that it will help someone. Think of it like throwing seeds(in the parable!)... some of them, maybe just /one/ of them, will fall in fertile ground - and lead that person(s) to the same peace with God that I feel.

> God wants us to love each other like he loves us, and he would certainly give up his money for us since he even gave up his own son, but accepts that we will be more selfish than that.

I love how you put that, and wholeheartedly agree.

hatradiowigwam··on The Polymarket users betting on when Jesus will return
Churches are fine - there are endless letters and instructions to them in the scripture you mention. "Religion" is not the same word as church. If you feel compelled to "demonstrate why almost every claim you said..." etc, feel free - it's ok! Christianity is about mercy and compassion, and you mention "emotion" - that's absolutely true. I'm very emotional about it, because my message is an emotional one, and emotions were high when it was given to me. It's not going to end my little universe if you disagree, or make fun of, or try to embarrass me about it. My sincere hope is that you are happy, and that through "emotion" or any other medium, you make others around you happy.

> I live in the largest Muslim country in the world

Are you a Muslim? I have a question for you... if I crawled onto your doorstep beaten and starving, would you invite me in and feed you? I am ignorant of Muslim teachings, and I don't know if this sort of things is covered...that's why I'm asking you.

I'm a Christian, and if you crawled onto MY doorstep, I would be ashamed with myself if I did not invite you in and care for you.

If your faith urges you to help the helpless, and my faith urges me to help the helpless... why do Muslims and Christians seem so opposed? If the news is to believe, we're like matter and anti-matter, we can't be friends, and at some point it always devolves to violence from one or both of the sides.
