hatefulheart··on Command and Conquer Generals natively ported to macOS, iPhone, iPad using Fable
What are those complications?

Last I heard Claude Code devs were trying to compare their app to a game engine or rendering system.

This was summarily ridiculed. Are you saying that writing a game engine is easier than writing Claude Code?

hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
You’re on a forum where people share anecdotes, so presumably, you?

Are you dumb or are you just pretending? I’m going to guess the former!

hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
So there is no CPU cycles for the ORM itself? That’s free?
hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
Oh it was just a flex?

Ok then!

hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
Looks like I’m not the only one, check the thread.
hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
You got it in one, small world huh?
hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
I think your tone is a bit combative. You can certainly provide the cliff notes but if you want me to believe you’re at working at computational limits whilst talking to me about string concatenation in web dev backend languages I think the burden of proof is on you.
hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
I’m not sure why you thought I meant code clarity and not performance? It’s clear in all cases the correct SQL query will be more performant.

Confused at what you’re evening trying to say here. Are you suggesting that 100 lines of application layer code is easier to understand than 15 lines of SQL?

hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
What optimizations are you making here when at the end of the day performance is dictated by the schema, the query planner and the network?
hatefulheart··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
I have seen many ORM enjoyers argue the point about “you can just use SQL!” but I have never once seen an ORM enjoyer allow it, much less do it themselves in an actual codebase. They will time and time again prefer you write 100 lines of Typescript/Python for what could be achieved with 15 lines of SQL.
hatefulheart··on Odin, Wikipedia and engagement farming
This is also why the conclusion of the article is extremely bizarre. I’m not keeping my eyes peeled for more articles from this individual.
hatefulheart··on We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works
This is a very cringe take.

Me and OP aren’t super heroes, we can’t do what a team of talented individuals created even if that team existed many moons ago. That isn’t the point.

We both questioned the tone and the conclusion of the comment.

hatefulheart··on We Are the Last People Who Know How It Works
Exactly.

Please get used to this sort of depressive, absurd and out of touch tone from HNers, it’s literally all they do now. Don’t bother calling people here hackers anymore, they have checked out emotionally and spiritually.

hatefulheart··on Show HN: DBOSify – Drop-in Temporal replacement built on Postgres
You can add a dev dependency in your pyprojec.toml with uv, look it up.
hatefulheart··on The AI backlash is only getting started
Are you suggesting we can make this comparison because there are no meaningful differences in society from the early 20th century to today?

I reject this argument as bad faith from the start.

hatefulheart··on The AI backlash is only getting started
Indeed it is so self evidently useful that you have to discover the correct way to use it.
hatefulheart··on We all depend on open source. We will defend it together
This is clearly a ploy to normalise slop PRs, slop in the FOSS world more generally and the timing is telling. We are in the midst of large open source projects rejecting LLM contributions, this is a response.
hatefulheart··on The founder's playbook: Building an AI-native startup
Ok but is it not fair to say that without the first thing all of those things are irrelevant? Again, why are we even having this discussion? Ask Elizabeth Holmes how not having a product (whilst doing everything else you mentioned) goes.
hatefulheart··on Stop Using JWTs
Yes we have heard this before, React is only 30kb! But that misses the enormous amount of infra you need to even just do a basic fetch. (Read the post by the React Query author on whether you need React Query or not)

Likewise with JWTs for sessions you need to handle cache invalidation, revocation lists, key rotation, the list of difficult comp sci problems really does go on!

The same issue as always plaguing the frontend world. Up front “simplicity”, enormous actual complexity

hatefulheart··on The founder's playbook: Building an AI-native startup
With all due respect this reads a little deranged. To sell something to the masses you fundamentally need a product to sell. I'll agree that how you market the product can be a "product" in itself, but that only gets you so far. If it was never not about the building why waterfall vs agile why velocity why stakeholder why business analysts why meetings why board members pushing for features?

This is like when AI bros claim that AI has changed absolutely everything for their project but the first thing they do is reach for docker compose, react and postgres. Why don't you forget the bloat and have your LLM make your container, vdom differ and lightweight DB?

It's very surreal to have to point this out.

hatefulheart··on Stop Killing Games fails to secure EU law despite 1.3M signatures
What does telling your customers you plan to make a game unplayable if it doesn’t perform exactly as you expect financially have to do with technical reality, pray tell?
hatefulheart··on Claude Opus 4.8
Oh my god! This model is incredible! A massive leap for humanity!
hatefulheart··on AI sticker shock hits corporate America
Maybe in your fantasy world.

In reality people are rarely rich based on merit alone.

EDIT: Sorry it was a really clever joke.

hatefulheart··on Building a web server in aarch64 assembly to give my life (a lack of) meaning
I interact with Assembly everyday and many of those around me do too. So I wouldn’t label it as niche. If there are thousands of people doing something in computing, it ain’t niche. It’s niche when the numbers are much smaller than that.

Judging by the downvotes that other guy got, he wasn’t “absolutely correct!” as you seem to claim.

Stop constantly editing your message.

hatefulheart··on Building a web server in aarch64 assembly to give my life (a lack of) meaning
You’re absolutely right! If a project has less than 1 million active developers it must be old and shite!
hatefulheart··on Building a web server in aarch64 assembly to give my life (a lack of) meaning
Ah yes, the niche that is video, audio, game and systems programming.

When those three to four amateurs still doing those niche things grow up they’ll move on to real programming, like putting together a solid skills.md file.

hatefulheart··on Building a web server in aarch64 assembly to give my life (a lack of) meaning
What on earth are you talking about? Assembly makes sense in desktop computing as well. Have you ever, for example, watched a video? What do you think powers the codecs, JSX?
hatefulheart··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
I don't believe this. Either you're lying, or you just haven't caught on how to use a computer.

Everything I do to interact with my computer is still the same.

See how boring you are?

hatefulheart··on Bringing Clojure programming to Enterprise (2021)
I read comments like these in bewilderment.

Have you worked for a company that hasn’t created its own, as you put it “mini language”?

Have you worked for a company that doesn’t indulge in over engineering, over abstraction and hidden cost?

Do you actually do programming for a job at all?

hatefulheart··on Astral to Join OpenAI
So when Charlie Marsh goes on a podcast saying that the majority the complications they face with their work is in DevOps, he's also overstating things?

But you know best it seems!
