hatch_q··on Linux Hates Me – Daily Driver Challenge Pt.1
But normal people use exotic hardware. From RGB lights in their cases, weird external storage with usb hubs to triple-monitor setup.

I'm a long-time linux user - i actually buy hardware based on Linux support.

hatch_q··on Things I’ve learned in my 20 years as a software engineer
Author nails it though with: "We should be far more concerned with keeping 0.1x programmers off our teams than finding the mythical 10x programmer."
hatch_q··on Hello IPv6: a minimal tutorial for IPv4 users
You're assuming that smart lightbulbs are to be trusted. You can't trust them, neither can you trust most of the software you run in your home network.

Take a simple app crash report on your desktop computer. Assuming i'm using VPN (but even without it, it's an issue)... With NAT, your crash report will contain network adapter address: 192.168.0.x. With ipv6, you're disclosing your /56 (or /64) ip range... disclosing your physical location, your ISP, ...

So in essence privacy extensions (hiding of internal network) are available, but disabled and unsupported by default.

Another thing are incoming connections - first thing i do with new router is disable UPnP, so clients cannot drill ad-hoc holes into my private network. How to do that with ipv6 network?

hatch_q··on Elk: A low footprint JavaScript engine for embedded systems
Wouldn't there be better options for that? python, lua, tcl, perl, ... ?
hatch_q··on Reactive Clojure: A web language
In this sense it's same as what microsoft is trying to do with Blazor - except they are skipping whole javascript crap and compile to wasm.
hatch_q··on Reactive Clojure: A web language
You need to treat clients as zero-trust. Your db is just a vector for DOS attack if you don't.
hatch_q··on 14kb WASM game written in D
testufo.com shows 144fps correctly. I don't believe this is issue on my side.
hatch_q··on 14kb WASM game written in D
Quite interesting... no noticeable difference in performance between the two. FPS capped at 72fps. And pretty much identical cpu/gpu load.
hatch_q··on Don't build a general-purpose API to power your own front end
You don't need redux most of the time, let alone sagas. It's very common mistake. Mostly you can use `useState()` and just pass it with props.

If you really need reactive global state i'd prefer to use MobX.

hatch_q··on BirdNet – Identify Birds by Sound
Probably a good reason for this. A lot of images of plants are in hands of humans (just checked PlantNET db) - i guess ML is modeled to ignore humans.
hatch_q··on Show HN: Should I Get a House? a better rent vs. buy calculator
Interesting. In EU, max interest paid per annuity is 10% and 90% goes to equity.

Also property taxes seem steep in USA.

hatch_q··on NATO Classified Cloud Platform Compromised
There's no NATO related data there - it's just a project for NATO.

If poisoned images were to be deployed into NATO datacenter, hackers would have no access to it as it's physically separated from internet.

hatch_q··on Racing Game in ClojureScript
I wonder how maintainable this is even for clojure experts? Simple feature - add 'jump' control. How long would it take you?
hatch_q··on Windows 10 to be retired in 2025, as new OS unveils
It wouldn't need to be open source. They would make closed-source distro with custom kernel modules and packages.

Just like MacOS.

hatch_q··on Windows 10 to be retired in 2025, as new OS unveils
With Intel's acquisition of SiFive... for Windows to support RISC V they'd need to do that anyway. They did it for ARM64 (partially) and are struggling. They have to do bunch of stuff via emulation instead.
hatch_q··on Tetris in ClojureScript
Looks nice in demo... github shows also the ugly bits.
hatch_q··on Tauri: Rust-based Electron alternative releases beta
And with WebView, RAM will be spent on redundant copies (instances) of WebView.
hatch_q··on Do Cryptocurrencies Provide ANY() Real-Economic Value at All?
BAT - basic attention token is paid to you if you enable ads in brave browser. The benefit here is that it's anonymous (at least to the point when you want to cash-out).
hatch_q··on Using the switch(true) pattern in JavaScript
Same. I also flag seemingly good things like !!x. If you want to convert something to boolean be explicit and do Boolean(x). In most cases it turns out there was a bug in input parameter in the first place and developer was just lazy to fix it.
hatch_q··on Lossless Text Compression [pdf]
Any typo i make i blame on lossy compreson.

hatch_q··on 1993: CGI Scripts and Early Server-Side Web Programming
Was also easy to "verify" contents of /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. cough cgi-bin/phf cough
hatch_q··on The S in IoT is for Security
Soon all 'smart' TVs will just come with 5G connection. Will make it much harder (if even possible) to deny them internet connection.
hatch_q··on Germany pauses AstraZeneca vaccinations as a 'precaution'
But the real risk here is that the lever will get stuck. Even if 1 person dies from vaccine - it can create huge, long-lasting case against vaccination, causing more people to choose not to vaccinate and eventually killing a lot more people.

There must be no doubts with vaccines, 100% trust in them is essential.

hatch_q··on A false sense of security
And if you add training wheels you'll be even less likely to fall off the bike. So why not make training wheels mandatory? Or maybe knee pads? Protective vests? Or just make cycling illegal. Just outright ban it, so people can't get hurt and can't hurt others. Where do you make this arbitrary line?
hatch_q··on AMD vs. Intel vs. Nvidia: How Users Are Switching
You need to install opencl-mesa and rock-dkms and should work. clinfo will then show OpenCL devices.

I have no clue why this is not included in distros by default though.

hatch_q··on hCaptcha now runs on fifteen percent of the internet
I use Buster browser extension with free IBM Watson speech to text node, free limitation is 500minutes of speech per month, which is plenty for solving captchas. The crux of all this privacy (blocked 3rd party cookies) is that i need to solve 3 ReCaptchas every time.
hatch_q··on Vanilla-todo: A case study on viable techniques for vanilla web development
I tried to upgrade a substantial codebase from vue 2 to 3 and hit a brick wall with Vuex early on.
