haskal··on What I learned from my mom (1941-2026)
I'll drink a yellow lightning as a tribute to your mom later tonight. Hope she finds it amusing that I do have both the ingredients at home.
haskal··on Office of the President of Mongolia: Top to bottom text on the web
I don't get it. Do you have an example that you can show this happening in?

Thanks!

haskal··on Facebook loses users for the first time
Why not just stop visiting FB?

You might lose access to things you logged in with "Login with Facebook" or lose out on some connections that are only on FB. Doom-scrolling FB is a bad idea, but whenever I log in to FB, I do it with a purpose (usually to text someone on FB)

That's a big jump from the time when typing "facebook" in the address bar used to almost be a reflex on opening a new tab.

haskal··on Starbucks and TrustArc add fake cookie processing delay if you don't click agree
Trailers are ads they don't make money from. It's not about the media being ads, it's about if the media makes them money.
haskal··on Legend
Is there a good screencast series about people doing stuff in Emacs? Not like a tutorial like "press C-x" etc. I just want to know what is possible, or what people mean by "I did _everything_ in emacs".
haskal··on macOS Nix setup: an alternative to Homebrew (2020)
Just replace "ripgrep" with "cowsay" or "neofetch" and read again.
haskal··on An impersonator issued a fake Reddit take down notice against SaveVideo
> and trying to click it brings you to a broken page.

Can you give an example of this (with the real link to compare)? Tracking info can be added to the URL but should not break the page.

There are extensions and addons that remove the tracking data for you, you might want to give them a try.

haskal··on Why Lichess will always be free
Puzzle Streak/Storm/Racer are the only equivalents that Lichess lacked from Chess.com, but so happy to see them added (like 1-2 months ago?)

Lichess is responsible for most of my chess progress through matches, puzzles, analysis board. Excellent piece of software.

haskal··on Initial M1 support merged into Linux SoC tree
I run NixOS on Mac on 2015 Macbook Pro Retina, works like a charm. Everything works on KDE.
haskal··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
Did you ever receive complaints that your emails are ending up in spam folder for Gmail/Outlook/<other big email provider>?

How about you receiving a lot of spam emails?

haskal··on Screw it, I’ll host it myself
What kind of SD card are you using? How many writes/transfer speed? The fact that the card can die on you and lose 400 GB of data gives me nightmares.

I got a Rock Pi recently and it supports M.2 slot and eMMC that goes up to 64 GB, this makes me less nervous.

haskal··on John Sullivan resign as executive director of the Free Software Foundation
> What do we do about this?

Step 1 would be to groom people to leadership positions. How is it that an organization of 35+ years doesn't have a good rank next generation who will take the baton from the old guard? I bet you can't name another member of the FSF. For Linux kernel, I can think of GHK, for Ruby I know quite a few people, but for FSF, the bus factor seems to be 1.

Even without all the accusations, FSF should have a leadership they can fallback to. I feared for FSF after Stallman (before the controversy), now I fear for FSF, full stop.

haskal··on Adobe Goes After 27-Year Old ‘Pirated’ Copy of Acrobat Reader 1.0 for MS-DOS
Those are hundreds of instances of people committing perjury.
haskal··on The Kilobyte’s Gambit
Bishop looks similar to a pawn unless you look closely.
haskal··on The Kilobyte’s Gambit
If you play a defensive setup like push D, E pawns one step ahead, fianchetto both the bishops, try to castle early, the computer just flings all the pawns forward, even from the king side: https://imgur.com/a/Nt4x7TP

haskal··on Open source projects should run office hours
I thought "office hours" is a common term in universities?
haskal··on India’s new intermediary liability and digital media laws will harm the internet
Please ignore the trolls, ramblings, and especially the newly created accounts. The current ruling party in India has an IT cell that tries to shape opinions online irrespective of the platform.
haskal··on The Kernel Programming Language (2010)
Isn't this a terrible language for a computer language? Let alone I have to search "Ruby programming" or "Python programming", "Kernel" is not even the top result for "Kernel language".

Naming things, indeed the hardest thing in CS.

haskal··on A Trip into FreeBSD
FreeBSD Jails: https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/jails/

Underrated feature.

haskal··on We Are Trying Out PeerTube
They have their own video hosting websites (Youku, QQ Video, Bilibili)
haskal··on Don't Make Students Use Eclipse
Was the gender of the person specifically mentioned on the website? I couldn't find it.
haskal··on Earliest known draft of the King James Bible discovered
The bible is by far the most translated text (and a reasonably sized one). I just wish it wasn't written in a weird way.

I learned a little bit of Korean by reading the bible as the primary source and when I tried to speak, I only got weird looks. I get why. It is like someone asking you "How art thou?"

haskal··on Pock: Display macOS Dock in Touch Bar

haskal··on The shittiest project I ever worked on (2013)
Start a consultancy, name it (or if you have one, rename it to) Cassandra[0].

haskal··on 500 days of Duolingo: What you can and can’t learn from a language app
I highly recommend Du Chinese for reading practice along with HelloChinese and ChineseSkill.
haskal··on Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den
You wrote Pingtype? I love Pingtype! It is a pinned tab on my browser because I come across Chinese words so often (fellow learner here!)

I think not spacing Chinese is a problem that gets solved through experience. The word groupings will be of 2-3 characters max unlike English where words can be 1-12 letters long (unless it is for nouns like 喜马拉雅 = xi3ma3la1ya3 = Himalaya).

The examples you gave are edge cases but I am sure you can read "butishouldstoptypingnow" just fine. You never though to segment the word as "bu-tish-ould..." because you have an expectation of sentence and type of words that fill positions in the "<conjunction> <subject> <aux verb> <verb>..." format.

haskal··on Ask HN: How to learn best practices when you have no one to teach you?
I like this one more:

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/enhancer-for-...

Because there are other options like switching off one tab when you start video in another tab, overlay if you scroll down, default quality (I have to be on 144p because of bandwidth constraints)

haskal··on Why Not to Use Quora
A proper subreddit.
haskal··on Ask HN: What's the hardest problem you've ever solved?
If the request you are talking about actually gets executed once (maybe it gets cached or something), then you shouldn't be pitching the time difference anyway.

If it gets executed 100s of times in a day per person, you can say this is 50 ms * 100 = 5s, 200 ms * 100 = 20s. And that's just per user.
