hashtag··on Uber's Goal to End Car Ownership in the World
I don't think this is going to happen unless self driving cars become the default model and drive costs down so much that each trip is the equivalent of close to the fare price of a bus ticket.

A tank of gas costs me currently about $20-$25 (Prius) while a recent ride for roughly 13-15 minutes cost me about $20 which definitely doesn't outweigh the value of owning a car trip wise.

Additionally it ignores the overall convenience of owning a car for transporting things like grocery, etc...

As someone who does use Uber and Lyft on several occasions, it's at best a supplementary service for my needs and as I'd imagine, many others

hashtag··on Asynchronous Learning
I don't have any statistics to back this comment up but I think it's quite common these days for people to bookmark stuff to read later except few do and the list grows insanely larger by the day. This is base on what I've heard roughly from Marco Arment off handed once and I believe I've read the same or similar comment from one of the competitors to instapaper.

The issue then would be how much actually ever gets consumed and even if they do, how much "actual" learning takes place simply by following up on reading stuff. I'd argue most people bookmark stuff of interest, less so for real educational value which in of itself is subjective at this point

hashtag··on Plz Dont Hunt Me Yet
This idea seems extremely self serving to whomever the author of the post and the badges as I imagine only ends up making a site look extremely ugly. If you don't feel the site is ready for PH, indicate so on the site I guess but this whole needing to put a badge up and attribute credit... Talk about stupid. I mean what value does it really serve that a site owner can't do themselves that would require attribution for something like this.
hashtag··on Dear Slack
Would be an awesome feature to have
hashtag··on Ask HN: How long need to wait for accepted to producthunt
Is there a process for getting an approved account without knowing anyone for an invite at the moment?
hashtag··on I Am Not Allowed to Post My Content on Reddit
You're right that everyone defines spam differently and that you can't give spam a singular objective definition across the board nor was that my intention with what I wrote above. What I did try to say was that every community has a policy of what they define as spam and it's not uncommon for most to share the common view (at least communities I've been apart of) that self promotion is and can be viewed as spam.

Using Twitter as a counter example doesn't fit here because as a company they don't share that view but apparently the subreddit you reference in your original post does

hashtag··on I Am Not Allowed to Post My Content on Reddit
There was at least one statement I disagreed with. It's a fallacy to argue that just because there are no ads and the posts are meant to be informative means it's not spam. Just because there is no direct monetization attached to something does not mean there aren't other reasons why people try to draw attention to their own posts/products/services/whatever. And most would probably argue there is value in the thing they are pushing as well. At the end of the day, your reasoning for why you think something is or isn't spam doesn't change whether it is spam or not nor the notion that in most online communities, constant self promotion (in some cases none are allowed at all depending on the community) is in fact spam, regardless of whether you think it provides value or not.

As a side note, the frequency of offenses does not dissolve whether spam is spam. You can say it doesn't do harm as a whole but that shifts the argument away from the fact that spam is an ongoing effort most people try to avoid from happening at all.

hashtag··on Did anyone else receive an Ello invite (to join the “millions”) today?
I didn't get an invite awhile back when it was first announced but I just made up some random string and got an account fairly easily. However I never really used the account or went back since.
hashtag··on Ask HN: What do billionaires do different than millionaires?
Most people here, if not everyone, is probably unqualified to answer this question. Any answers given are likely to be speculation and best guesses. Take any answer you get with a grain of salt.
hashtag··on Ask HN: Need a career advice
Focusing on making it medical related won't increase your chances by much if at all, only to narrow your opportunities. If you can code, it shouldn't matter. Speaking from experience and from people I know personally, your lack of a degree isn't the main deterrent from getting a job programming in most cases
hashtag··on Ask HN: We Have Been Asked for a Price to License Our Online Game. How Much?
Congrats. I have no advice to offer as I am not knowledgeable enough in this area but I would love it if you could do a follow up after. Would be informative.
hashtag··on Ask HN: Why is soylent worth $100M dollars?
I ordered early summer and only got my order a couple weeks ago so I'd estimate backlog to be roughly 6-7 months
hashtag··on Ask HN: Need a career advice
Why limit to something that relates to the medical field? Just focus on programming as a career.
hashtag··on Ask HN: How many of you wish to quit a job to build a startup?
Traction. Enough of it to quantify moving forward.
hashtag··on Ask HN: Help me make a decision
Company A. I value personal growth and happiness over pay differences. And it seems like Company A will help me more base on what vague information is provided.
hashtag··on Ask HN: How many of you wish to quit a job to build a startup?
Just working on projects on the side. Nothing I'd call a startup yet and certainly nothing I'd be dropping everything to dive into at this moment.
hashtag··on Ask HN: How do you find freelance/contract gigs?
Check your local contracting agencies
hashtag··on Show HN: Waldo, a free background messenger for iOS
1. I have no clue what you mean by a "background messenger".

2. The title used here and the text on the site doesn't correlate the same message to me.

3. I have no clue why I would want to install this if it lets others spy on what I do (I assume thats how you allow people to keep up to date such as how much battery life I have left?)

Perhaps I'm just not understanding. Can you clarify?

hashtag··on Ask HN: What would you gladly pay $30/month for?
One-on-one, technical
hashtag··on Ask HN: What would you gladly pay $30/month for?
Sorry should clarify, meant high level technical mentorship
hashtag··on Ask HN: What would you gladly pay $30/month for?
Quality mentorship
hashtag··on Show HN: Trailer gods and you never miss a trailer again
As someone who is a major movie buff and all, I generally check for new movies coming out and check their trailers on YouTube or Apple Trailers.

I don't think I'd use this site as the above fulfill my needs pretty well.

hashtag··on Ask HN: Would you buy shares in MIT or Stanford
No
hashtag··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel that ProductHunt is going downhill?
Maybe it's just me because what you see in product hunt now, is exactly how I saw it since the beginning. I could never get myself to care to check it at all in the way I do HN
hashtag··on Soylent 1.3
I think fixing their back order problem is more crucial than constantly announcing new versions at this point. I ordered before 1.0 and still waiting...
hashtag··on If you use LinkedIn, BEWARE Huge flaw found
Not all companies issue emails to their employees. Users who are adding old positions may not have access. There are all sorts of headaches the other way around too. You have access to your domain and email because you just created the page but that doesn't mean everyone else will. It's a trade off both ways and there needs to be a better solution than what you're suggesting.
hashtag··on Ask HN: So I just finished the JavaScript course on Codecademy, now what?
I recommend learning how to utilize what you already know first before moving on. Try building some basic stuff using plain JS
hashtag··on Ask HN: What do you use to access HN on your phone?
Chrome. I try avoid using 3rd party apps to access HN.
hashtag··on Steve Wozniak remembers the early days [video]
I have a similar passion for both but often to struggle to grasp things at a similar high level by far
hashtag··on Do engineers shop for clothes?
I want to say possibly but the honest truth is Nordstrom has (or had) a personal shopper option and I never used them when shopping there so I can't imagine doing so anywhere else either.
