hashstring··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Greg KH said this week in his talk at Kernel Recipes: yes CVEs are increasing, no reason to panic, a lot of the LLM CVE fear mongering is overstated [1].

This is a more valuable insight/signal than a CVE enumeration, especially given that Linux CVEs are literally assigned to any bugfix (as others explained as well).

hashstring··on It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs
It’s not the argument he’s making.

Firearms are an application of more general techniques like combustion, which your car is (probably) using too.

We could definitely draw lines at points where it makes most sense.

AI to detect melanomas is a completely different application than AI for autonomous warfare.

hashstring··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
> I'm looking forward to Meta taking down all videos where someone is a bit harassed. Internet will be a much nicer place!

Well, I’m looking forward of Meta going down. Now that would benefit the Internet.

After that, I think the fact that these glasses are allowed in the first place creates a problem that Meta as a platform cannot fix, because Meta is just one of the many many places where videos can be posted.

hashstring··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Yes, but that’s not bad. It boils down to a threat model.
hashstring··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Yes, except that they haven’t been able to fix this completely in sw and the community knows this.
hashstring··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
What is the tell on the punk one?
hashstring··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
No, marketing is about communicating valuable offers.

Misleading communication is what I am describing, that is a subset of all communications.

hashstring··on US Military had close call after using AI for hallucinated intelligence report
Exactly, this is correct.

People often assume they are not because they can ask the same query to the same model and get differences in output, but wrongly conclude that this is some inherent LLM trait, instead of non-determinism added on top of it because of implementational choices that were made.

hashstring··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
Hm, yeah, depends who you’re marketing this to.

Also, the “0 ports opened” marketing is misleading. It still binds to a port and then also lets people access your resources over it.

I dislike that Cloudflare Engineering has become more… marketingy as of late. Also with their Cloudflare OS misnomer. Their products used to make more sense, what happened?

hashstring··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
Yes, I hope policy makers also understand this reality.
hashstring··on An open letter to Dario: if you mean it, open the weights
I think both presented plans are suboptimal.

However, Dario’s plan is BY FAR the least compelling and non-sensical. I think a constructive discussion should identify issues with current proposals so that we can instead develop something valuable.

Dario’s plan is bad because:

1. It’s blatant window-dressing to monopolize and concentrate power in a field in which, currently, no company has established moat and there is no practical path to create that. Anthropic knows that and doesn’t like that. That is exactly what his incentives are and proposals from him should be viewed through this lens. Just like how SHELL has a clear conflict of interest with progressive proposals on CLIMATE POLICY.

2. It clearly is ineffective in achieving the presented goal of ‘moral alignment’. Chinese labs are open weighting and are 3-6 months behind US labs. What levers does the US currently have to align on this? The answer should be in international diplomacy, but given that Jared Kushner was the US delegate sent to talk about NUCLEAR issues in Iran, one should draw the conclusion that this lever is broken. Any meaningful repair work (which is non-trivial and will take a long time anyway), cannot even start within 2 years.

3. Anthropic is and has long been working with the Department of War on killing machines. Their machines were and are being used in the US war with Iran. This is only shocking to people that read about their news stunt that made Anthropic seem so distinguished. This is what exalted Dario to become the pop-posterboy of an “ethical AI” company. Objectively, guidance based on his moral compass should be challenged and this media campaign should not cloud that. Again, this relates to the earlier point I made that Dario’s for-profit company incentives being fundamentally misaligned with the public interest.

4. Your government, the United States, is authoritarian and that is the biggest threat to any altruistic “moral alignment” endeavours happening there.

Yet, Dario misidentified the state of the system that his company exists and operates within when he wrote:

> “The US and other democratic governments attempt to coordinate with authoritarian governments”

A valuable discussion can start when “the US and other” is moved to the part after “coordinate with”.

hashstring··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
Ah yeah, well they integrated Chat afaik.

I meant to say when they launched their promo [1] for Siri AI. Can’t find a non IG link, sorry.

hashstring··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
Agree, it makes it completely unpredictable.

I recommend you to write a message to OAI support, maybe it helps with changing it.

hashstring··on ChatGPT Images 2.5
Apple Intelligence received the same criticism when they launched Siri AI. Seems like the faking it, is a common product UC.
hashstring··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
I rather have them hand out these banked resets (even if they expire after n weeks), that would prevent the problem case I described.
hashstring··on An Alien Mind
Yawn, you gave a lot of praise but said a whole bunch of nothing substantively.

I work with LLMs daily and recognize the value (for me, it’s speeding up SW development) but I’ve heard the same old song for the past 3 years. It’s getting played out. “But this next thing though! This next thing!”.

Will you say the same thing when the next frontier model releases?

hashstring··on I-have-ADHD: A skill to stop coding agents from burying the answer
These resets also reset your weekly timer right. So it’s like, you may have 30% left for 1 days that you want to use. They reset it, and that means you your “new week” timer starts today.

That sucks, because it doesn’t always work in your favour if you plan your weekly spend.

I think a real reset shouldn’t also reset your week timer.

hashstring··on Adult Film Producer Unmasks Prolific 'John DOE' Torrent Pirate as Meta Executive
Getting paid meta exec money and not using a VPN for this, lol, good riddance.
hashstring··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
True, openweight is the correct term.
hashstring··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
Thank you, that’s it exactly.
hashstring··on Omarchy: Any User Process Can Escalate to Root
No one serious about security touches Omarchy.

Practically every distro suffers from critical LPEs, but at least there’s a bar.

Omarchy is a hot mess that exists for the same reason that matcha is in our coffeeshops and peptides are in our collective memory.

hashstring··on Norway should buy OpenAI
I think Norway should not waste money on this.

I think OpenAI’s does not have ANY moat. They are currently a leader but lack the piles of cash required to stay a leader in the medium/long-term. (They can not in anyway compete with AWS/Alphabet on that front, and they know that too.)

Researchers and engineer will want big comp, as they can get it elsewhere, if you stop paying that, then you loose the knowledge necessary to stay a leader, even though it’s a losing race in the long-term anyway. The company will become a growing pile of non-SOTA techniques and models + old hardware in no time.

Why waste that money…?

hashstring··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
Eh, we’ve seen many footholds of documented chains start in application code throughout time.

To list a few: - WebKit (CVE-2016-4657) - WhatsApp (CVE-2019-3568) - Chrome (CVE-2021-38003)

Then, also the distinction between platform vs application gets fuzzy with bugs in PassKit etc.

hashstring··on Tl;dv: Over 180k meetings left wide open
Hegseth loves this app!
hashstring··on Tl;dv: Over 180k meetings left wide open
The disclosure section is gold. It’s such an accurate description.

Major consumer companies reply just like that.

It’s incompetence and I think to an extent also arrogance.

hashstring··on Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
Interesting points!

Sent from my Gmail OS

hashstring··on Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
It doesn’t schedule tasks, doesn’t deal with physical memory, it doesn’t initialize hardware or interface with it on a low level. This is just an app that lives in user-space, nothing more.

Calling this an OS is like calling Gmail an OS.

It doesn’t make any sense.

But since OSes are notoriously difficult to define [1], half of America added AI slop to diets that were already repulsive to begin with, regurgitates the chyme, and passionately feeds it to their peers, you may even get away with it nowadays.

hashstring··on Apple is getting this wrong
> after confusing two Asian last names

The addition that the last names are Asian is insane and just put there to make the opposite party look bad. Ironically, all it does is reflect the spirit of OpenAI.

hashstring··on AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog
