hashmush··on How to pronounce the trickiest English words
But at age 6 you've already been immersed in the language for 6 years. The problem there is to link it to its written form.

When you learn a second language you have the baggage of the first language hindering you (talking about orthography here), and you normally don't start by speaking the language exclusively for 6 years before learning how to read. If you don't know what the language is supposed to sound like, of course it's hard to understand how to read in it.

hashmush··on Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars from centre from 2025
> The people in nordic countries seem so naive to me. They trust their governments, their authorities to do this stuff, to both determine the greater good and then implement it. The political class couldn't possibly act immorally, for their own benefit, apparently.

Not everyone is happy with this change, if that makes you feel better.

Also, this is implemented by the city, by real people (yes, politicians are people) that Stockholmers voted for.

Political class as a concept doesn't make much sense in Sweden, just FYI.

hashmush··on Stockholm to ban petrol and diesel cars from centre from 2025
I live quite far from Stockholm and commute there by train. My office is just outside of the zone.

Most people I know at work own a car, but no one drives to work. Why would they?

Seems like people driving in downtown Stockholm are the kind of people that can afford EVs anyway. (Of course, disabled people etc. But they are also covered by the new rules.)

Do people really go to NK by car?!

Seems a bit overkill with a brand + domain name for every new vulnerability.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice find and all, but I'm really distracted by all the fluff.

I try to always add comments to such code that explicitly says exactly that. Something like:

hashmush··on Couples with joint checking accounts are happier
How does this work? You have $1000, spend $600. You now have $400. How does the bank allow an overdraft here? Why isn't the transaction rejected?

I guess this is a debit vs credit card thing?

hashmush··on Couples with joint checking accounts are happier
Our situation is the same. I think it works well because we are both quite restrictive by nature, so whenever one of us wants to buy something the other often encourages them.

Not sure how it would work with a couple that tends to spend more each month or a situation where one has an expensive hobby and the other doesn't.

hashmush··on Show HN: Workout.lol – a web app to easily create a workout routine
Yes! I agree, it'd also be nice if the "select equipment you want to use" instead was "select what you have available".

I'm a noob. I have some stuff. Show me what I can do with it!

hashmush··on Cantonese Font with Pronunciation
> It could be alternatively argued that the more complex syllable (due to more tones among other things) in Cantonese allowed it to retain single syllable words without having to add extra syllables to clarify any ambiguities.

Yes, pretty much.

hashmush··on Cantonese Font with Pronunciation
From my understanding Mandarin has a lot of two-syllable words and in many of the words the second syllable doesn't add much, if any, additional meaning.

Contrast that with Cantonese, which I believe still uses a single syllable for most words. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

So it makes sense with less tones, because you have more syllables to disambiguate.

hashmush··on Wikipedia user edits over 90k uses of “comprised of”
Not really the main point of my comment, but okay.

Firstly, mapping symbols to sound is arbitrary and based on convention.

I don't speak French, but I wouldn't say français.e.s is that much worse than français(e)s, pronunciation-wise. But I do agree that -.e.s is a bit odd. Kinda like w/ and w/o in English. I mean, seriously, why isn't it w. and w.o. like any other abbreviation.

hashmush··on Wikipedia user edits over 90k uses of “comprised of”
Sounds like you have an ax to grind. The whole comment comes of as very dismissive of the feminist movement (which might be justified, I know nothing about feminism in France).

> [..] nor would I accept them if I got them (political militantism doesn’t make a good employee, especially if they pretend including women is a new thing).

I don't know what to make of this, you'd reject candidates because they used dots instead of parenthesis, citing political militantism?

hashmush··on Office of the President of Mongolia: Top to bottom text on the web

It's obviously not meant to look like ≠.

hashmush··on Korean as a Concatenative, Stack-Oriented Language (2017)
> In fact, learning English as a native Korean speaker, one of the greatest difficulty was asking questions - you can't just start your sentence and make it a question later, you have to mentally pause, construct your question in your head, and then invert the first word! It took me years.

This is quite interesting to hear, but I assume you mean that you always knew if you were going ask a question before you asked it. So the issue was the actual construction of the sentence itself?

If not, there are plenty of ways to bail out of a statement midway through a sentence.

- Korean is more efficient than English... right?

- Korean is more efficient than English, isn't it?

- Korean is more efficient than English? (raising intonation at the end)

hashmush··on KanjiVG – SVGs of Kanji character strokes including order, shape and direction
Writing by hand leads to optimizations, such as not lifting the pen a lot. This means that the movement between strokes also gets drawn. A 10 stroke character might end up being one single continuous path (effectively 10 strokes + 9 connections). Depending on stroke order, the results can be wildly different. So consistency makes sense for the result to be intelligible.

hashmush··on Origins of Japanese and Turkish language family traced back 9000 years
The Wikipedia article for this proposed language family is quite interesting. The linked article makes no mention of the Transeurasian family not being widely accepted. I wonder if these new findings help the proponents' case.
