hashbig··on A Short Guide to Iraq (1943)
Oh you mean like they liberated the people of Iraq in 2003? yeah North Koreans are really missing out...

And people in Cuba and Hong Kong raise American flags just because the US is an enemy of their State (enemy of my enemy is my friend) not because of "freedom and change".

hashbig··on A Short Guide to Iraq (1943)
> You aren't going to Iraq to change the Iraqis. Just the opposite. we are fighting this war to preserve the principle of "live and let live."

Can we bring this America back?

hashbig··on How did Replit respond to this blog post?
From the wording of this “apology” it’s clear that this is just meant to save face and damage control. I don’t think he would’ve reached out had the author not published the first blog post.

“Virtue is what you do when nobody is looking. The rest is marketing”. – Nassim Taleb

hashbig··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
I already cancelled my subscription for the hacker plan on Replit, I not going to support a bully. Also, I expect people to upload mirrors of riju the same way they did with youtube-dl when Github decided to take it down.

Edit: nvm it's already happening: https://github.com/umesh-timalsina/riju

hashbig··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
I unfollowed him after he tweeted that Repl.it is the most innovative company in the world.

Yeah, not SpaceX or Neuralink or Pfizer. A company that runs docker images is the most innovative company.

hashbig··on Google employees call for company to support Palestinians and allow anti-Zionism
Equating anti-Zionism with anti-semitism is a Zionist idea in and of itself. The fact that many Jews are anti-zionists doesn’t help your argument either.
hashbig··on WebOS OSE 2.10
I still remember my Palm Pre and the first version of WebOS. I sometimes wonder how much different the phone OS world would look like if Palm didn't choose Spring as their exclusive partner and commit their other fatal mistakes.
hashbig··on How to Write Readable Code
> Reading well-regarded code can give you a sense of what good can look like.

What are some good looking code one could read, regardless of the language?

hashbig··on Parler drops offline after Amazon pulls support
I remember very well as a middle eastern how ISIS was freely allowed to use Twitter, Facebook and Youtube for recruitment and propaganda in 2015 and none of those platforms did anything about it. Also just today this story was on the front page in HN: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/06/technology/myanmar-facebo...

So spare us all the "No hate and violence on our platform" BS. Either you go after all hate and violence or you are just a hypocrite.

hashbig··on Should I Buy a House?
Another problem is that people who buy a house for $1M don't have that amount laying around in cash to choose to put it in stocks or in a property. At the end, they will be making more money because their compound interest will be on the entire price of the house $1M vs the S&P compound interest on the amount they have in cash (a fraction of the $1M).
hashbig··on WhatsApp Will Start Showing Ads
When you sell, you lose the upper hand. You can't make any promises or any guarantees. All the negotiations in the world won't make a difference.
hashbig··on WhatsApp Will Start Showing Ads
I remember when I paid the $0.99 after the first year a friend told me "if you uninstall the app and reinstall it, you get another year for free".
hashbig··on Windows 10 is now nagging users with full screen Microsoft Edge ads
Buy him a Chromebook or an iPad this holiday. No one deserves this.
hashbig··on Nova by Panic
I just don't understand why all this work didn't go into making an iOS text editor. Why did they choose Mac OS? It's the most saturated platform when it comes to editors.

Meanwhile, the only thing that keeps me from using my iPad Pro full-time is the lack of a serious text editor and terminal.

hashbig··on Motivation – Keli Language
> How many 10 year old kids are there working as professional programmers?

Many of them in 10 years time, and they will be using concepts they learned when they were 10. And FP enthusiasts would complain why no one uses their favourite language.

My point is, if we want to get more people to use FP we have to make it more accessible. Everything from building better tooling, tutorials, environments. Good languages alone don’t matter.

You can’t tell me that it’s just as easy to get started with JavaScript or Python today as it’s to start with OCaml. That’s just delusional.

hashbig··on Motivation – Keli Language
No, golang is just as easy to install and work with on vscode. Just install Go and the official Go plugin and you have an IDE experience complete with debugging, formatting, and intelligent autocomplete. It has nothing to do with vscode being written in JS.
hashbig··on Motivation – Keli Language
Compare that to JavaScript where you can literally just install vscode and node and you’re up and running. Not to mention that you could pop open a console in any browser and execute code.

I love OCaml as a language but we have to admit that the developer experience just sucks.

For something to be simple, a 10 year old kid needs to be able to figure it out. That’s how languages get adopted.

hashbig··on Motivation – Keli Language
Elm single handedly got me into functional programming. Everything from the syntax to the standard library. I haven’t used a language that was that elegant and delightful to use perhaps since I discovered Ruby.

It makes me really sad that Elm turned to this niche language/framework that it is today. I had hoped for it to grow someday to have a mobile target in addition to web, to be able to use it on the server, hell even to be able to use it to build systems. So much wasted potential.

hashbig··on Noam Chomsky: 'There's never been a moment in human history' like this one
Here Chomsky's biggest concern is a nuclear war, for Elon Musk it's AI taking over the world. Almost every culture has its own version of this story (usually religious) about the world heading to a final event, and a new world order emerging thereafter. We humans are obsessed with stories of the end of the world.
hashbig··on The Four Quadrants of Conformism
ARAMCO and Saudi Arabia by extension were not built because of innovation. PG is talking about the importance of discussing idea regardless of how unorthodox they are, because the majority of successful companies are built, believe it or not, using ideas and not oil.
hashbig··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Common sense. You demonstrate on low profile accounts so when the “client” pays you for the real job, you still have access to the vulnerability.
hashbig··on Sampler for Mac Touchbars
Seems like an app better suited for the iPad than the touchbar. The Touch Bar is meant to complement a desktop app, not be one.
hashbig··on Robinhood has lured young traders, sometimes with devastating results
It is the price of democracy. When voting was democratized it allowed people with all different backgrounds and varying level of education to contribute to the political body of a country. Same thing happened with the democratizing of information with the arrival of the internet and search engines. It allowed the flow and availability of information, all kinds of information, including flat earth conspiracy theories, guides on how to perform violent acts ...etc.

One needs to look at the net sum. In my opinion, the net of the democratizing of stock trading, like other forms of democracies was a positive.

hashbig··on Deno will stop using TypeScript
Different use cases = different technologies.
hashbig··on Deno will stop using TypeScript
Most of what Dart offers was addressed in ES2017 and beyond. I think it was released a little too late in my opinion.
hashbig··on Today’s developers don’t need what the App Store offers
Is it me or the math in the article doesn't make sense. The author is accumulating the costs for selling a SINGLE instance of the product on Shopify, Ebay, Amazon, and Walmart. When in reality, you would be paying only for the one you sold your product through, even if you offer your product on multiple platforms.
hashbig··on Opinion: Case for removing master-slave terminology from music production tools
What is that make people react to events that happen in the US differently than those outside of the US? I mean there are people who die and people who protest about a variety of different issues outside of the US (just recently protests in Hong Kong, Iraq, and Lebanon). However, it never causes this magnitude of response, from media platforms and tech companies, to music production terminology.
hashbig··on COBOL programmers answer call

hashbig··on Why I’m Leaving Elm
Evan response to the bus-factor: https://youtu.be/uGlzRt-FYto?t=508
hashbig··on SpaceX bans Zoom over privacy concerns
This is both true and false. Apple stores keys on the device so they can't read your old messages, but say they want to start reading messages of a particular user, they can simply issue a new key and store it on the device and the server and start decrypting the new messages using it.

This is why WhatsApp for example notifies users when the key of the recipient changes, and they give you a way of verifying that the both keys at both ends are identical.
