hashberry··on Replace "master/slave" terminology with "primary/replica"
It's an example of how words can change. The counter-argument is that slave is a "bad word" and can only mean one thing (e.g. humans not machines), therefore it should never be used to describe anything else.
hashberry··on Replace "master/slave" terminology with "primary/replica"
As does MySQL. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/replication.html
hashberry··on Replace "master/slave" terminology with "primary/replica"
Words can have multiple definitions. Webster dictionary defines slave as "a device (as the printer of a computer) that is directly responsive to another." Machines aren't people.

No one implements "master/slave" database replication and then thinks human slavery is socially acceptable.

hashberry··on Entrepreneur’s Drug of Choice
Any reviews for this site? Any successful purchases?
hashberry··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
In the short-term, perhaps. Returns long-term are high than 3%-4%.
hashberry··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
Two important adjustments when using this:

"Investment return rate" -- Only 4%? An index fund will return higher than that.

"Monthly common fees" -- Required if you are considering buying a condo. This changes the per month rent comparison dollar-for-dollar.

hashberry··on Poll: Do you use marijuana
It's hard to safely consume food (red meat, sugar, etc) these days also. You want to know why I eat burgers? Because they taste damn good. Why do I consume marijuana? Because it makes me feel damn good. This doesn't mean I eat red meat and get high every single day. It's more like a couple times a month. This "destructive behavior" will not destroy my life.
hashberry··on Poll: Do you use marijuana
It can give you a different perspective on your product since it will appear "new" to you (cannabis makes life seem more novel). And it makes you appreciate good UI/UX.
hashberry··on Poll: Do you use marijuana
Agreed. My pot usage is similar to my alcohol usage. It's not every day, just every now and then. I also enjoy different forms of cannabis (edibles, vaporize, hash oil, etc) just like alcohol (whiskey, beer, wine).
hashberry··on Why America's Middle-Class Housing Crunch Is Here to Stay
The article mentions Seattle's increasing minimum wage... but a family needs an income of $90K+ to comfortably buy a median priced home here. A high minimum wage won't increase homeownership.

Lower and middle-income families simply cannot afford to buy a house in the city. Homeownership is a luxury, not a right.

hashberry··on Removing User Interface Complexity, or Why React is Awesome
Back button breaking on latest version of Chrome/Win7 here. Scrolling up and down adds history.
hashberry··on Technology’s Man Problem
The article is out for vengeance. "Titstare" isn't even a real app, but satire. The article uses this joke as an example of technology's "man problem."

Men: you cannot make sex jokes in public, especially at tech conferences. Any sexual innuendo will be labeled misogynistic. Don't forget about the two guys who got fired after joking about "forking" and "dongles."

Male co-workers can make crude jokes between one another and laugh about it. But say anything sexual and if a woman hears it, you will be labeled sexist, misogynistic, and reported to HR or shamed on Twitter.

And women wonder why they feel excluded from their male peers...

hashberry··on Dot-con job: How InfoSpace took its investors for a ride (2005)
This is fascinating investigative journalism by the Seattle Times on InfoSpace and stock market fraud. It epitomizes everything that was wrong with the dot-com bubble. The manipulation of information on the value of the website/product/company is horrifying.

Check out the rest of the series: http://seattletimes.com/news/business/infospace/

hashberry··on Burnout
You're not alone. I'm in my 30s and daydream about having a post on the frontpage of HN with everyone "recognizing" how awesome my projects/thoughts are. How can anyone be satisfied with mediocrity?
hashberry··on HTML is almost 100% responsive out of the box
The non-min version has a UTF-8 character in a comment. Rather silly.
hashberry··on HTML is almost 100% responsive out of the box
The CSS file could be more minimal if "@charset "UTF-8";" were removed. The only reason this is required is because of the UTF-8 character in the comment.
hashberry··on 2048 x 2 = 4096
Well, to beat the game you need a score of ~41000. So you are in the bottom 15%.
hashberry··on The New Barbie: Meet the Doll with an Average Woman’s Proportions
Busty dolls harm a girl's self-image and violent video games create sociopaths, or so they say.

Maybe playtime is fantasy and part of growing up is learning to deal with reality. Such as average is average and there are a lot more attractive people than you.

hashberry··on The new PHP
"There are only two kinds of programming languages: those people always bitch about and those nobody uses." -- Bjarne Stroustrup
hashberry··on Can 10,000 hours of practice make you an expert?
But is that really "practice?" If someone doesn't care or is passionate about a subject, they won't become an expert. With many of these 10,000 hour studies, practice and play are indistinguishable... it engrosses them and they love to learn and teach themselves.
hashberry··on Marijuana: Much More Than You Wanted To Know
This is painful to read. Manipulating and making up numbers, reclassifying demographics ("teens" vs 20-year-olds), and then concluding that we should "concentrate all of our research and political energy on how marijuana affects driving" even though a study was quoted that "increased availability of marijuana is actually associated with decreased car accidents."
hashberry··on My children’s book on technology raised 100k within 24 hours – here’s how
The presentation and video was amazing. I immediately fell in love with her. She smiles non-stop. She jumps around with giddy excitement in a cute little dress. She's the perfect manic pixie dream girl trope. I want her to have all my babies.
hashberry··on Leaving Google
C'mon troll, Seattle is where people go to make money. Seattle's tech industry beats Vancouver any day.
hashberry··on The 10x Engineer and Delegated Responsibility
In other words, he doesn't micromanage engineers. Not that big a deal... most managers know not to do this.
hashberry··on A 60-Hour Work Week is Not a Badge of Honour
yeah bro if you are working 40 hours a week, you better be making at least $166k/year
hashberry··on Why do web browsers use such bad languages?
Please offer alternatives and examples of "awesome" front-end programming.

Also, the author fails to take into account the evolution of the web browser. In my day we didn't even have CSS. Just HTML.

hashberry··on Does Your Learning Management System Marginalize Women?
Reminds me of the dongle/forking joke fiasco. Anytime a woman hears a crude joke she thinks it is directed at her and all of womankind. The man must then be shamed publicly. This is our future.
