harrytuttle··on Intel-based Chromebooks
You nailed it there.

And before someone says it, no "I'll stick Ubuntu on it" isn't a valid answer to the problem as you're still supporting them by buying it.

harrytuttle··on Intel-based Chromebooks
Lenovo already sell one of them :)
harrytuttle··on FreeBSD Is No Longer Building GCC By Default
Great news! Always good to have some compiler diversity amongst products.

I wonder what this will do to the ports tree though!

harrytuttle··on Thoughts and Observations on Today’s iPhone 5C and 5S Introduction
Today the feature of not being a second device outweighs almost any other camera feature.

Unless your eyes are tuned to look at iPhone snaps or have poo in them, then no. I'll go as far to say that it's crap and a dishonest attempt at calling it a camera.

I'd rather carry a second device around. Here - a quick holiday snap from my Coolpix P330 with NO processing whatsoever: http://i.imgur.com/mtic70l.jpg

harrytuttle··on Brightbox launches new lower-cost cloud server tier
Bigger VMs (180Gb, 16 cores, 8 discs up to 16TiB storage), better basic VM spec, graded discs (guaranteed SATA, archive, SAS, SSD), much cheaper basic data included, live migration, integration with their dedicated servers, managed service, generally cheaper, been around years (as bytemark.co.uk), own DC, own Internet AS + network and peering, IPv6.

Ok and they use KVM instead of Xen with virtio drivers.

Paper about their systems: http://blog.bytemark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Design...

Cheaper, better, waaaay more flexible, entirely UK based (this might be a good/bad thing depending on where you are)

For the not-so-old and forgetful amongst us, Intel did this until 2006 as well (StrongARM, XScale)...

Have fab, produce ARM is the reality these days.

harrytuttle··on Don't trust me: I might be a spook
GCC's optimiser does some crazy shit sometimes including removing necessary code in -O3. Perhaps some of that crazy could be related?

As for using FreeBSD 4.1 off a CD in your closet, I recently set up an NT4 machine with SP2 (requirement!) that was to be used entirely offline. Surprisngly it booted and works fine on a brand new Intel chipset H61 based machine with an SSD in it (graphics are stuck at 800x600x16 but that's a requirement too).

harrytuttle··on GCHQ: Can you find it?
And being public sector, that's "if you suck everyone's cock on the way up".
harrytuttle··on GCHQ: Can you find it?
prospects.ac.uk is full of shit as a rule.

Err no:

16MP, 12x optical zoom, upto ISO3200, Lens shift VR

The only good thing is f/2.2 which the Lumia 1020 has and is a better camera, 32Gb of built in storage (and SD card slot) for £200 GBP LESS than the 5s.

Apple are rip off merchants. Sorry.

harrytuttle··on GCHQ: Can you find it?
Yes you too can work as a minimum wage government slave chained to a PC for cracking this...

Any person who cracks this should post it on a blog straight away just to undermine the whole process.

harrytuttle··on GCHQ: Can you find it?
Ha good find!
harrytuttle··on AutoDesk Releases An Electronics Simulator Called 123D Circuits
Yes this is always 'interesting'. I'd personally suggest that everyone at least stuffs the following components over a 30v DC 5 amp supply (in a fume cupboard with goggles on) at least once just so you know when to wince: electrolytic capacitor reverse polarised, 1 ohm resistor, generic npn transistor (base-emitter forward biased), various LEDs, signal diodes.

you learn to double check your circuits first then :)

harrytuttle··on AutoDesk Releases An Electronics Simulator Called 123D Circuits
Ex EE here (RF/mixed signal). I always modelled it as everything being connected to everything via a tiny capacitor and a big resistor in parallel. This allowed a few odd scenarios to be reliably identified, especially in UHF frequencies and above.

The trailing capacitor just had a large value invisible resistor attaching it to your circuit somewhere :)

harrytuttle··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
Or just not buy the fucking thing to start with...
harrytuttle··on iPhone 5c
Two points:

1) Crayola got there before Apple did.

2) Rounded corners patent.

harrytuttle··on Torvalds' response to whether RdRand could be compromised in the Linux kernel
You think adding laws is going to solve the problem?

Not a chance.

harrytuttle··on Real Terminal, All Chrome
Yes and bar the internet connectivity and the phone part, the HP48 series are far more powerful than any smartphone as a computer!

http://my.opera.com/vladrodr/blog/2008/11/11/convertir-progr... <-- says it all

harrytuttle··on [dead]
Good for you! Same here. 12 years in, 3 children and we've not been apart from each other for more than a couple of hours in the last few years (and that was due to surgical appointments only)
harrytuttle··on Real Terminal, All Chrome
You took the words out of my mouth. Oh and my HP48 has done many hours as a primary computation device.
harrytuttle··on Work like hell
I prefer:

"Work smarter". If other people are putting in a 40 hour week, then you can automate yourself and increase efficiency, then do a 20 hour week and do stuff you want to do rather than must do. In my case that means spending time with my family.

Elon does a miserable job of family by the looks.

harrytuttle··on Download Windows 8.1 RTM, Visual Studio 2013 RC Today
Google for: "microsoft connect clickonce ie9"

Look at connect and the forums. Oh and stackoverflow.

Then look at how many people get screwed by the lack of proxy support (to get around this we actually rewrote a chunk of clickonce!)

harrytuttle··on Arduino based curtain automation
No worries. Didn't take it as snarky at all. Valid idea!
harrytuttle··on Arduino based curtain automation
Probably a good idea. Unfortunately great ideas like that only happen after experience. He was 14 at the time.

He's now a lab manager for a pharma research company so some of the hard lessons about safety must have stuck.

harrytuttle··on I left Google, and lived to happily tell about it
There's not much to it. I started an online "virtual helpdesk" company. The first company I got in signed a contract and promptly went bust after I'd spend all the incoming cash on marketing to get other companies in. It plummeted into debt and I folded it.

The sickening bit was to offset the debt, I sold the codebase to another company which did quite well out of it. They offered to hire me in but I couldn't face it.

harrytuttle··on New iPad browser from Opera
Spot on.

It's like the Flash/ActionScript developers of the early 00's have crawled out of their graves one night and worked out how to do splash screens again.

harrytuttle··on I left Google, and lived to happily tell about it
Antidote:

I left a big company (not Google) to persue my own startup and fucked it right up leaving myself in debt for 5 years :)

harrytuttle··on Arduino based curtain automation
That looks awesome. There's nothing like that left in the UK apart from a company called Greenweld [1] who are a shadow of their former selves.

We get "radio fairs" occasionally which are electronics meccas but even these are dying off.

harrytuttle··on Download Windows 8.1 RTM, Visual Studio 2013 RC Today
The problem is that devdiv have been doing this for a few years so some of us (previously heavy investors in Microsoft's products) are now pissed off.

firstly the fuck up that is Microsoft Connect where critical defects which cripple teams for years are ignored (VS HRESULT errors, hanging, crashes) even if reproducible.

Secondly, partner support is a piece of shit. It took 6 months to get a damn registry workaround out for the fact that download prompting in IE9 basically fucked up ClickOnce for 2000 clients for us.

then you fuck us with two license audits which cost us a fortune as it's impossible to decipher your shit crock licensing.

then you pulled windows 8 on everyone, ignored the entire industry saying "no, you fucked up".

then you pulled free visual studio for desktop and did a 180.

then you pulled windows 8.1 (which didn't fix windows. 8) and told everyone that you're not getting it before GA then did another 180.

No, you're not delivering what people want. You're fucking us over again and again and we're fed up with it. The only reason we're still drinking the milk is that we're stuck with it until we do a major product cycle.

That time is right now.
