hardly_a_mirage··on Ask HN: Anyone make good money selling side-projects?
I'm currently unemployed and getting a job is turning out to be really tough.

So I was wondering if it's a viable strategy to build a complete product, end-to-end and put it out on the market for someone else to purchase and operationalize.

I think "side-project" is misleading. What I really meant was "quickly buildable" projects. Some examples of such projects would include a unique LLM-powered content generator, or an AI-based Google Forms, etc

remove.bg is a good example of a project in the lines of what I have in mind.

Just a product, pre-launch.
hardly_a_mirage··on [dead]
The guy must be on to something. Because this thread is on the frontpage of HN.
hardly_a_mirage··on Google deploying planes over cities for 3D maps (2012)
Do any of these platforms provide SDKs for integration / other access to their 3D maps? I needed it for a project and couldn't find any.

hardly_a_mirage··on Ask HN: Wouldn't it be great to be able to follow fellow HN users?
> There are times I miss public vote counts. While it's nice to assess someone's position just on its merit, it's also useful to factor in how much popular support that opinion has. If I disagree with a position that looks well-endorsed by the community, maybe I should take a second look at the topic and whether my minority position is really correct.

It also has the negative impact of discouraging people from voicing their opinion.

What I really like about HN is that I could be reading opinions from leaders in the topic field, or someone who is just a hobbyist in the field, without really knowing it. And I get to make my voting decision based on the quality of the content alone.

hardly_a_mirage··on Someone from the product team at Gitlab needs to look at issue 35054
The complete radio silence from Gitlab's team over an issue this serious _over a 3 year period_ compels me to maintain my distance from their product.
hardly_a_mirage··on Stop the Earn IT Bill Before It Breaks Encryption
> Today many argue the state has a need to access such correspondence to prevent crime, but such a need is like the need of an addict: nothing good can come from it and the people should not enable these institutions to satisfy an ever growing demand for insight into their private lives. One must remember that democracy is founded on the believe that thoughts and words are not crimes and everyone must be free to express them-self in public, but even more so in private correspondence. A society that mistrusts its own citizens to a point where all those that whisper to each other are called criminals, dealers, traitors or terrorists is rotten at its core.

I feel disregarding the usefulness of surveillance is part of the problem. We should not be arguing that that nothing good comes out of surveillance. It provides your opponent an easy strawman for a hollow victory. Because frankly, surveillance is a useful tool for law enforcement.

We need to rather argue that the moral cost and side-effects of public surveillance far outweighs its usefulness.

hardly_a_mirage··on Google's Sundar Pichai says future of office is employee 'on-sites'
That introduces a host of new problems. Workers will likely have to leave their families behind for a week every 2 months. And where will they stay during office-week?
hardly_a_mirage··on Letsencrypt, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
My comment was not accusation of incompetence, rather the lack of details provided. It's like receiving a ticket saying "This doesn't work. Fix it now"
hardly_a_mirage··on ASK HN: Need feedback on my SaaS for editing HTML themes

hardly_a_mirage··on Letsencrypt, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
From the linked article above

> In November of 2019 we will stop allowing new account registrations through our ACMEv1 API endpoint. _Existing accounts will continue to function normally._

hardly_a_mirage··on Letsencrypt, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Without any details, it's uncertain what the real issue was. It could very well have been attributed to a misconfiguration on your machine.

I manage over 20 client domains over a dozen servers. Have letsencrypt protecting them all. The only time I needed to manually intervene after the initial domain + SSL setup was to upgrade to ACME v2. Everything generally works out of the box with Letsencrypt + Certbot.

hardly_a_mirage··on Why Karachi Floods
MQM and the Mayor is still waiting to receive a mandate from the provincial government. All power lies with the PPP in Karachi.
hardly_a_mirage··on Why Karachi Floods
It's clear to everyone in Karachi that it has been neglected by the provincial government lead by the People's Party of Pakistan (PPP). PPP is the most corrupt entity in the country. At least other governments do 'some' development while filling their coffers. PPP undoes even the development of previous governments to fill their coffers. Karachi's institutions have been filled with political appointees with little or no merit. Everyone appointed to run the country is only interested in filling up their pockets. Even slight rains that would be unnoticeable in any other part of the country fills up sewerage lines leaking them out. This is not new. What's new is that this years rains have been unprecedentent and even upscale areas such as DHA are affected, which is why all the commotion in the media.
hardly_a_mirage··on Electron 4.0.0
A lot of electron apps (like Slack) could well use over 1GB.
hardly_a_mirage··on Ask HN: What is the best API documentation you have ever seen?
Twilio's API and SDK references vary from practically non-existent to completely unusable. I often have to resort to reading their SDK code to figure out what methods to use.

hardly_a_mirage··on iPhone crashing bug likely caused by code added to appease Chinese government
Knowing fully that they would be heavily criticized for complying? I think not.

If Apple wanted the world to know, they would simply release a statement.

hardly_a_mirage··on Show HN: pgmongo - Drop-in replacement for MongoDB using Postgres
I'm with you. I don't see the usecase for this. If you really want to migrate from a NoSQL to an RDBMS, you really need to restructure your data.
hardly_a_mirage··on The best laptop right now: Huawei Matebook X Pro

hardly_a_mirage··on Drone Maker Accused of Covering Up Bomb in Bag on Delta Flight
> I wouldn't discount the entirety of the TSA just because of the failures of the bag-check program.

Bag check programs are focal to these discussions because they cause the most inconvenience to passengers.

hardly_a_mirage··on Uber Thinks Its Self-Driving Car Killed Because It ‘Decided’ Not to Swerve
The article's headline has no relation to the article. The article text clearly states that the pedestrian was flagged as a false positive. 'Deciding not to swerve' implies the system gave preference to the safety of the passenger over the safety of the pedestrian. Heavily misleading IMO.
hardly_a_mirage··on Examples of marketing tactics
> Why they don't set a cookie and prompt only once you're a repeat visitor for a while is beyond me.

Most of them don't care.

Browsers ought to require a user action to trigger a notification request. I vaguely that being the case before, not sure where things changed.
