haram_masala··on Two men arrested with 7 kg radioactive uranium in Mumbai
Yeah, but 7kg of ore wouldn’t cost $1.5 million.
haram_masala··on ‘Belonging Is Stronger Than Facts’: The Age of Misinformation
This could use some specific examples to illustrate the phenomenon. I can think of a few from recent memory:

- The way Obamacare was sold to the public, which was highly deceptive. See ACA architect Jonathan Gruber’s comments about how it passed because of the voters’ “stupidity.”

- The CDC telling us not to wear masks because they wouldn’t help, and then telling us to wear them; and finding out that the first recommendation was an intentional lie.

- Pretty much everything the media reports about race.

haram_masala··on Catala: A Programming Language for the Law
Tangential note, it’s exciting to see someone using MPS. It’s an interesting and possibly transformative software technology that seems ahead of its time.
haram_masala··on Major Depressive Disorders Have an Enormous Economic Impact
I’d say this is perhaps a bit of a violent oversimplification, but still contains some useful perspectives. Work to live, don’t live to work.

haram_masala··on Court: ‘ghost gun’ plans can be posted online without State Department approval
To be clear, there are two versions of the PM522; one of them has hardened steel liners for the chambers. That’s the one I’d trust.
haram_masala··on Court: ‘ghost gun’ plans can be posted online without State Department approval
There are a couple fairly recent designs for 3D printed guns that are useful weapons, certainly better than the pipe-wood-and-nail arrangement. For example, the Washbear PM522 and the Liberator 12K shotgun.

But as another poster pointed out, ammunition is a completely different matter and is really the gating factor in all of this.

haram_masala··on Court: ‘ghost gun’ plans can be posted online without State Department approval
Wow, talking of rhetorical tricks. In this case, a textbook false dilemma.

The right to bear arms does not negate whatever right to safety you think you have. There are 300 million privately owned firearms in the US. Yet the odds of dying from a firearm homicide are quite small.

> “Human rights” are a fiction, like money.

There are countless dictators and tyrants who agree with you on that.

haram_masala··on Court: ‘ghost gun’ plans can be posted online without State Department approval
It’s not a theory, it’s an axiomatic principle. Oppression does exist, and it’s an affront to that principle.
haram_masala··on Court: ‘ghost gun’ plans can be posted online without State Department approval
It is perhaps the single most fundamental aspect of American culture. Though of course, certain people want to subvert that principle in order to aggregate power for themselves and their interest groups. I hope they eventually see the light and embrace America, or meet the same end as the redcoats.

There are literally millions of defensive uses of firearms every year. Source: the CDC. https://repository.gheli.harvard.edu/repository/12225/

The First and Second Amendments don’t grant you the right to free speech and to bear arms. Being born a human being is where those rights come from. The amendments simply proscribe the government from infringement upon them. Not a hundred SCOTUS judges, not a thousand, not a million of them will change that.
haram_masala··on Jonathan Smith walks free after 21 years of wrongful imprisonment
If someone is legally in the US, why would they fear having their life uprooted by having to show their papers?
haram_masala··on Ask HN: Does anyone else find the AWS Lambda developer experience frustrating?
One way to make your life easier is to use a JetBrains IDE with the AWS Toolkit extension. Many of the pain points you’re experiencing are greatly eased by that.
haram_masala··on Public-ownership rental as a third option to renting or owning a house
Doesn’t this depend on whether those homeowners have borrowed against their (rising) equity? I wonder what fraction of homeowners actually do so. Personally I wouldn’t dream of it, so rising prices don’t really affect my lifestyle at all.
haram_masala··on The U.S. corn belt has lost a third of its topsoil
Lab-grown meat will taste exactly the way consumers expect meat to taste, for the same reason orange juice does.
haram_masala··on Bernie Madoff has died
Bitcoin is in some ways preferable, since you’re not subjected to violence if you choose not to participate in it.
haram_masala··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
You must have read a different book than I did, then. Because the book you read seems to completely ignore the battles Cleve Jones and others fought within the gay community. Keep in mind, the very title of the book was meant to apply to everyone involved in this crisis. Everyone. To miss that point is, frankly, dangerous.
haram_masala··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
I’d recommend “And The Band Played On” for a thoughtful and well-researched narrative of the early AIDS crisis. There was plenty of blame to go around, including for the CDC and the gay communities.
haram_masala··on Once on the brink of eradication, syphilis is raging again
You should add to that the hypersexualization of commercial culture, and in fact the commercialization of sex itself by apps like Tinder and Grind.

Though, it’s perhaps a bit unfair to call the behavior idiotic - I do think people who engage in self-destructive promiscuity do so out of pain, or due to commercial manipulation that they aren’t savvy enough to resist.

haram_masala··on I refuse to stand by while my students are indoctrinated
He was a modern-day Erasmus, something we desperately need right now.
haram_masala··on Show HN: Three Things Daily – Make gratitude a daily habit
My suggestion is that you gameify this. Add daily challenges, unlock achievements, and compete with others using the app in your area. Crush your friends at staying grateful and you get exclusive skins to download for the app. Really, engagement is the key.
haram_masala··on Icecream: Never use print() to debug again in Python
Then you are either using a bad debugger, or you're not using one properly. A good, fully-featured debugger allows you to store sessions and configurations for various efforts and problems you're trying to diagnose, along with your notes and links to relevant issues.
haram_masala··on Everyone wants to do the model work, not the data work [pdf]
Exactly, in fact it’s the opposite of anything. I’ve seen plenty of life sciences companies where the bioinformatics team was added on long after founding the company, almost as an afterthought.
haram_masala··on Tony Hsieh bankrolled his followers, who enabled his risky lifestyle
There’s a Russian saying, “Your friends are the ones who can tell you ‘no.’”
haram_masala··on They Just Moved to Austin. Now They Want to End One of Its Traditions
San Antonio is one of the friendliest, kindest, and most delightfully understated places I’ve ever visited. Whatever it is that makes it that way, let’s spread it across America.
haram_masala··on UK police warn students to avoid science website
This would be news to me, but it would explain a lot. It always seemed unlikely that Sci-Hub’s archive was entirely contributed by concerned citizens.

Phishing, though, crosses the line. Once you start tricking people and removing their agency, you’re the bad guy.

haram_masala··on Wrecking sandwich traders for fun and profit
This is cynical and yet at the same time reassuring, since the entire crypto world is mysterious to me. I’ve never bothered to understand it, and it can be frightening to think that it might be the future, as inscrutable as it is.
haram_masala··on Narco Submarine Found in Spain
This is in fact a common strategy. Often the “submersibles” aren’t self-propelled and are basically underwater barges trailing a fishing or leisure boat.
