happertiger··on I Don’t Know How to Waste Time on the Internet Anymore
Second vote for discourse!
happertiger··on Apple faces class action lawsuit over failing MacBook butterfly keyboards
This is the real point. It was removed and in no way did it need to be. I miss it. The new mbp is no bueno.
happertiger··on Tesla's Simultaneous Brilliance and Incompetence Revealed in Teardown of Model 3
Are they working with Tesla to provid this feedback into their production flow? There is no mention of it. Does anyone know?
happertiger··on Shaper Origin: Hand-Held CNC Machine
I own one. It comes with autodesk 360 for a year. Truth be told, this thing is solid as a tank and incredibly well built. Makes inlays a breeze and does a faultless job at basic tasks.

The best part is that all the capabilities are in a small box so you don’t need a room to store it and it’s portable.

It can take a long time to do larger projects and you can’t fire it up and forget it, but it’s an exceptionally good product.

happertiger··on Smugmug Acquires Flickr
I would be very surprised if what they did wasn’t common sense. Their track record has been fantastic.
happertiger··on Smugmug Acquires Flickr
I still have an account. If there was a reasonably priced, full featured Flickr I would resubscribe.

I have a smugmug account. Is there going to be a way to marry the two??? I have 11 years of photos on Flickr and would hate to have to move them (your sys people would hate it too I’m sure).

happertiger··on How I trained an AI to detect satire in under an hour
As always it’s easy to apply this technology to differentiated content from a single publisher vs another publisher, as is the case here. In addition the onion is satire, but satire is the easier use case because not only is it single source content (as mentioned, but the larger the author pool and the more differentiated the model the higher difficulty accuracy becomes) but it doesn’t have to take into account less outrageous articles built on subtler genres like parody and sarcasm. Subtle crushes machine learning algs ime.

Love the concept, but it’s be great to see a deeper exploration as a demo. Keep going!

happertiger··on Eleventy – A simpler static site generator written in JavaScript
I know rite?
happertiger··on Kottke.org is 20 years old today
You know what is so great about Jason‘s project? He himself publishes it. He has survived blogging, social media, instagram, Facebook and is still actually interesting. There were so many publishers in the early days when he got started, but so few still publish. In fact, my heart aches for a return to the originality that we had an individual publishing at the time when the site got started.

I’m not being nostalgic. I genuinely, and passionately want to have that specific energy back on the Internet, and believe it will happen eventually as the pendulum swings the other way. There will come a time when people read discover the joy of writing and connecting individually via that writing. So much of the value of the Internet has been supplanted by platforms, to the point where meaning has been lost in interpersonal communications because it has been monetized and in many ways obliterated. Eventually these companies will come back into balance, for users will abandon them because there is no meaning. I suppose, being a student of Roman history, that I could be wrong.

I have been a fan from day one, and I appreciate publishing it. Congratulations.

StopZ. Your being too right.
happertiger··on Pilot.com raises $15M to bring bookkeeping into the modern era
Good. We need a substantive competitor for Quickbooks and some real innovation in the space.

You can’t underestimate the complexity and specific requirements of accounting software. Startups in the space begin their journey in a nuclear minefield of customer requirements, and have to navigate not only the professions inane nuances, but also continually evolving bureaucracies and the accounting and tax realities they create. Not. Easy. Stuff.

I wish them luck. Seriously. It’s nice to see entrepreneurs attacking the boring companies. :)

happertiger··on Theranos, CEO Holmes, and Former President Balwani Charged with Fraud
These are desperately embattled claims at scale. If you lie to the SEC and you are an ass to the government they will crush you. Oldest story in the valley, and certainly beyond... another tale of hubris that ends in classic tragedy.
happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
I’m going on the record as not actually liking the name Siri. Pithy though that sounds, it’s the Sharon or Ralph name in digital assistants and I don’t even like saying it. Try saying “hey Siri” in a quiet room sometime and feel the awkward.

Also it doesn’t work.

happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
Smartthings is the platform to beat for Apple. It’s simple, easy and incredibly powerful. I can’t understand why Apple doesn’t apply their magic to the model and just knock it out of the park. They have all of the pieces and the ux experience to make it exceptional.
happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
If they have an iPhone X, at least 92 percent of those users are the inside of a handbag or suitecase.
happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
We bought an amazon device to use as a kitchen timer. It sits right next to where everyone charges their iPhones. Nobody uses Siri. It’s sad. I want to love her, but I honestly can’t remember the last time she was useful, she only works with apples’ ecosystem (and I refuse to use maps it’s tried to kill me on multiple occasions), and I can’t honestly remember the last time I was impressed with her progress forward as a tech.

If the sum of 20 years of voice technology is a glorified stopwatch, you got to wonder...

happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
If Apple engineers who work on Siri were required to do all of their corporate communication with Siri exclusively, Siri would rule inside a year.

That is assuming they were trusted to work on it instead of report to status meetings, or meetings to their dotted line manager, etc. Apple was built around Steve. It’s going to take a while.

happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
Sigh. That’s the main reason I won’t move to the s9. I already have an iPhone and Siri just sucks. Why would I want another sucky assistant? It’s like hiring the wrong person... twice.

I really wish the manufacturers would only have a few features, like weather or timer or location (home, work, school) that were truly bulletproof in execution. It feels like they are trying to do too much most of the time when I just want them to not suck consistently so I can actually use them reliably.

happertiger··on How Apple let Siri fall behind the Google Assistant and Alexa
Someone here knows. Let’s be honest here. ;)
happertiger··on What I Learned Burning $14k on YouTube Ads for Candy Japan
I don’t understand. You didn’t do any alternative testing? Why not?

Whenever I test a new channel I start by making variations to test different factors, so that I can learn what works and what doesn’t. I feel like a lot of people run ads but don’t quite get the concept of running a campaign.

My suggestion would be to try that next time... while you didn’t make money the real question your left with is what could you change to actually make money?

Loved be writeup! Thank you.

happertiger··on React course for designers
But the course doesn’t exist yet... it will be available in ‘2018’ and ... wot? Another lean training Kickstarter? Pass.
happertiger··on Travis Kalanick Exercises Right to Appoint Two Uber Directors
None of what you hear. Half of what you read.

The truth will not be found in the media channel. The media is rarely reporting anymore. They are delivering.

happertiger··on RethinkDB is shutting down
I have always wondered why there isn't a tech company that just does kick ass documentation for companies. Seems like a small group of people who make kick butt stuff in this area.

Really, you did have fantastic documentation, as the original said. Kudos.

happertiger··on Tesla is a Battery Company
I mean it's a hell of a good point. Not trying to take away from the post.
happertiger··on Tesla is a Battery Company
If Tesla executes, they are going to be the leading company in a number of industries, of which battery technology and manufacturing is one of them. They are also leaders in direct sales, JIT manufacturing, motor design, any one of which is a disruptive innovation channel they could monetize, all in the service of building electric cars. Tesla is an energy company, a battery company, a car company, etc, just as GE or any other innovator ends up in many segments. What they are is a nascent Multi-business, Multi-national company that the market is betting (based on the stock price) is going to be able to be a global force. A lot of publicly traded companies are single-business companies that derive most of their revenues from a domestic operation. The few companies that manage to become multinationals have this outsized influence because they tend to drive massive revenues, earnings, and markets caps. The correlation between operating in multiple business areas and being a massive multinational is a direct relationship, because disruptive businesses always reach a saturation point. Businesses like Tesla that set out to disrupt industries that represent significant portions of GDP will naturally need to move into multiple markets in order to execute their strategies, because they need to disrupt or create a sequence of disruptive or creative strategies in order to reach that saturation point (natural market size).

I love Elon for the fact that he thinks of his businesses on a planetary basis, and if you consider the point, you'll see he's actually executing Tesla in multiple markets simultaneously, and essentially going directly from startup to Multinational, and skipping the domination of a single category. He knows that if he doesn't, he's going to face stiff competition from entrenched companies and it's likely he'll lose his advantage. But by tight control of the supply line businesses, and a few strategic relationships with existing multinationals, he's able to elevate Tesla into a multi-business, multi-national organization in record time.

Sure, they're a battery company, but what they really are is an organization that's shooting for the moon and actually executing at that scale. Simple incredible to watch.

happertiger··on Ask HN: The rising “Hackathon Hackers” culture
Look, the Valley is full of dreamers and some are lucky at it, but most success happens out in the real world and needs doers to make it go. Dreamers are usually more articulate and well spoken than doers, since that's all they do. Above all, the Valley rewards dreamers who actually do.

Ignore the bullshit — there will be plenty. Focus on what you want to do.
