hansor··on TikTok Remix Culture
I must say that I dislike TikTok with passion - but this one was actually very creative and funny.
hansor··on Israeli air strikes destroy offices of Al-Jazeera and AP in Gaza
How does this differs from terrorist bomb attacks?

IRA, ETA also often made phone calls before attacks.

hansor··on A URL Lengthener
Same here. Amazing artistic stuff.
hansor··on Things I wish someone told me about getting a promotion
I'm talking here about bare minimum survivor kit :) [also I'm not from US so prices are lower here I guess]

Even worst and cheapest possible suit ["slim fit" preferably] is still making you looking better than 95% of people around - as they don't know the difference.

Modern nylon can look and feel GOOD if mixed with viscose. Such suits are ridiculously cheap. I have few of such suits, and to be honest - people(let's say ladies on the street) do not see the difference between those and 90% wool ones. :)

Same goes with cheap Chinese shoes. If you take care of them - they will last even if they are shit. For example I still wear 100% leather shoes I bought for 40$ over 4 years ago. I just take great care of them and I fix them on my own.

My thesis is: get cheapest stuff and make most of it. Same as: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimax

hansor··on Ask HN: How to fix difficulty admitting I'm wrong?
When I make mistake at work I always send this gif to my team and boss (it's available in MS Teams!):

https://tenor.com/view/oops-my-bad-caught-eating-gif-1146550...

So try to laugh it off, and move on. Works good on team's morale too.

hansor··on Ask HN: Choosing a language to learn for the heck of it
If you want to learn something NEW with new syntax:

- Modern COBOL. You can get free course from IBM with access to virtual Z/OS development platform. Real language - and totally fresh stuff to learn!

- Julia - it seems that it will dominate the "big data" hype in incoming years. Also its similar to ALGOL or PASCAL so you will be able to learn something new from typical C/Python/Go syntax.

hansor··on Movies every physics lover should watch (2020)
I know it, it was fine from point of camera, music and storyline, but for me it was too vulgar, bizarre and not realistic...

I mean i know that aspect of theology in PI is "not realistic" as well, but Tetsuo is just pure madness on LSD.

hansor··on Things I wish someone told me about getting a promotion
>I hate visibility. >I'm still a shitty midlevel dev that's only seen a 30% (22% inflation adjusted) pay increase over 9 years and doesn't even make $100k.

My advice: 1. Buy cheapest black or dark blue suit, buy few cheapest white shirts, buy cheapest leather shoes. You can do it under 120$ - and it will be best investment in your life.

2. BRAG when you do amazing stuff.

Managers WILL notice if you CC them in email or talk about it in public. No need to "steal" success from anyone from your team - honestly brag about stuff that you personally made!

You can for example send email at 9 PM to your team, boss and HIS boss such us:

HI! I'm glad to announce that FEATURE XYZ IS WORKING, I will further test it in night, but it seems that its ready for production. WE MADE IT :)

Otherwise your BOSS and HIS BOSS will never know that you are amazing! You need to show them that you are doing fantastic work - otherwise, they might be too busy to notice.

hansor··on Do you think overfunding can be a detriment to a startup?
All depends on money management IMO.

For me its hilarious how come some companies are able to burn 100M$ and not deliver anything.

Small surgical teams with strict money management will never burn such amount of money - so they survive and deliver the product.

IMO 90% of startups fail because of irresponsible money management and bad contracts(delayed payments, extreme penalties for being late etc.)

hansor··on Things I wish someone told me about getting a promotion
Ohh sh*t. Sorry if i offended anyone by "Maybe in India"!

What I meant is that there are some sane companies where promotion or rise is more about motivation, and its not driven by "up or out" mentality that you can see in Accenture and similar companies exploiting their workers in poor countries.

hansor··on Things I wish someone told me about getting a promotion
>You will never get a promotion or raise if there's no formal performance review process and career ladder.

That is total BS. I had promotion multiple times just because business owner liked me and valued my work.

>You have to be performing at the next level for several months

Total BS too. Maybe in India.

> VISIBILITY

This one is not BS! I have seen many many developers without any rise - just because they do not attend any meetings, they look like bumps(no suits!), and those who do not talk much with their own boss or boss above...

When I manage to do something BIG - i make sure that my boss, his boss, and boss above KNOWS that we tried hard and delivered. It's not a shame to brag about real accomplishments :)

In that way I received 32% pay-rise in past 2 years.

hansor··on Movies every physics lover should watch (2020)
It is my favorite movie of all time. Hacking hardware + hacking software + stock market + GO game + GOD

All without sex scenes, silly jokes or some out of order music...

I highly recommend this movie to everyone - I have never seen anything like it for past 20 years...

> My hypothesis: Within the stock market, there is a pattern as well. Right in front of me. Hiding behind the numbers. Always has been.

hansor··on Minsk Family of Computers (2001)
>I think you mean almost free room for a family of four, inside a three bedroom apartment with two other families.

You must be ironic and for sure NOT from post soviet block.

I meant normal 2 bedroom apartment in newly build, modern building for family of 2+2 for free(you revived one after working for around 10 years[including studies!], at age of around 28.

It was not really "free" as you had to pay around ~4% of your income for those 10 years. (Another perk: in communism you did NOT pay any from of income tax as ordinary worker).

In my country government made and gave away few few millions(!) of such apartments. In matter of fact - I'm still living in one of it, and apart from asthetics, they are warmer, strudier and quiter(!) than modern apartments.

>But that doesn’t explain why they had to build a wall and use exit visas to keep people in.

There is simple explanation: GREED and wish for political freedom.

Greed: As soon as all population had jobs, healthcare, free apartments, free education and insane levels disposable income (no taxes, no mortages): they got greedier, and wanted to have all stuff from socialist state but lifestyle seen western movies. Millions belived that west is like in Hollywood.

Political freedom - during the communist era people did not have any political freedom, as in modern China. Many could not stand it so they wanted to escape.

hansor··on Minsk Family of Computers (2001)
It would be amazing to have some of those systems implemented as emulators or as FPGA clones.

It's very sad that nearly all computer science and history is biased towards western systems with common myth that Soviet Block did not invent/made their own hardware and software. Same goes to digitization of manuals...

Fun facts:

- It is common western myth that Soviet Block citizens were in any way forbidden from owning personal computers in 80".

- Life was good: free healthcare, education, guaranteed retirement pension, almost free apartments from government, 1 bit computing, RISC, parallelism, decimal computers, fast floating point accelerators, vector computers - we had it all in late 70".

For some reason no one brags about it, and no one cares about preservation of such historical artifacts or knowledge alone. Many Wikipedians also reject such claims as there are no western sources available to quote...

Central/Northern Europe. One of post soviet states with deep distrust towards political parties...

Internet and Google. Seriously.
hansor··on Ask HN: What are the three most expensive tools/services that you use?
>what value you get out of being a paid member?

- More money from fees = better political campaigns = more voters = larger representation in Parliament/Congress = ability to change the Law(country, county or City wide). This is very rewarding - and much better than just moaning about politicians!

- Large "instant" social network of people who shares the same values as you do! (We have a lot of internal messaging tools and forums.)

- There is a lot of members who are lawyers, doctors, accountants, barbers etc. - so its easy to get some occasional help for free or with discount.

- You can literally change the world. For example you start some loose discussion on Discord or Slack let's say about homeless people: and half year later, after various meetings and internal votes our senators/MPs can actually make such proposal to Parliment/Congress. It is VERY rewarding.

- A lot of introverts inside of party, as it attracts mostly high IQ people, so it is possible to find company to play chess, computers games, board games or real life sports etc.

- You can actually TALK to politicians that you see in TV. Or have beer with them.

- You can argue, or give your own ideas about something - at it WILL be taken in account(internal voting even at lowest levels).

- You can say: "At least I tried to DO something!"

hansor··on Stock Market Returns Are Anything but Average
US market should NOT be used as any scientific benchmark for anything - as it does not represent "all" typical possible scenarios for the stock market.

Look for example(one of many) at Japanese NIKKEI index - it was going DOWN for like 20 years! So this theory does not work!

Many people in Europe also quote multiple studies based on US market - but they are usually worthless on other markets(both bonds and stocks). If you add inflation and CPI - this theory is even more worthless.

US market is special - as US is one of very few superpowers on Earth.

hansor··on Learn Linux without internet and stack overflow: Linux HOWTOs
Same here. With those HOWTOs I was able to learn networking from scratch in home without actually having internet connection. Good times :)

> Would anybody else write new HOWTOs?

I always wanted to, but because I'm not native English speaker I was always afraid to publish anything.

Still i think it could be very beneficial - especially that we all observed dozen of forums and websites just vanished over the last decade or two, but those documents are available to all as simple Linux package.

hansor··on The Slackware Way (2012)
I remember dualbooting NetBSD 1.3.1(and 1.6) and Slackware 7(and 3.x) at 386SX 33Mhz with 4MB of RAM :)

From my memories NetBSD was very fast, but 1.3.1 did not have any pkgsrc yet (so no easy software compilation).

hansor··on The Slackware Way (2012)
You might be right that it was not due the a.out format alone. Now I remember that at the same time there was some huge migration from libc5 to glibc!

Maybe it was composition of libc5 + a.out + egcs that gave us speed(no swappng) back then.

I might do some benchmark on "PCEM" emulator (only proper emulator for old hardware as it retains original speed of cpu, memory and hard drives) in my spare time.

hansor··on The Slackware Way (2012)
I love Slackware. Best distribution to learn. I had to learn it all - without internet, just man pages and "HOW-TO" manuals (it is a shame that we no longer produce them!).

https://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html

Started with 7.0 and 8.1 in ~2003, but soon I discovered that older versions were using a.out binary format instead of modern ELF. A.out binary format was amazing - binaries used MUCH less memory, and were faster in general in comparison to modern "ELF".

For example system with ELF could not run at 4MB of ram without extreme swapping, but a.out (like Slackware 3.9 AFIK) could without much problems.

I never understood why a.out binaries went out of fashion :(

Fun fact: older versions of Slackware were using EGCS instead of GCC compilers.

hansor··on Ask HN: What are the three most expensive tools/services that you use?
Zero! Monthly subscriptions are waste of money, and whole SaaS is IMHO wrong step in human evolution. I prefer to have my stuff for free or own stuff.

My free stack:

- Comms: Free "work" phone with unlimited everything, and free unlimited LTE/5G "work" modem.

- Music: Free Tidal from work + my own ripped MP3s.

- Software hacking: free virtual machines running at Oracle Cloud(and some services at IBM cloud).

- IDE: IntelliJ Community Edition and NetBeans 12

Only real monthly "subscription" is:

- 15$ monthly "membership fee" for my political party.

hansor··on Why Linux requires 4MB of RAM no matter of kernel size?
I'm sorry but that is totally not what I'm asking about.

I'm asking about the artificial HARDCODED limit despite the size of kernel or modules. This is hardcoded at boot process - no matter how big or small your kernel is.

For example my 1.1 bare-bones uncompressed kernel [just basic modules] can work at 2MB of RAM, at size of ~700kb.

Almost the same uncompressed bare-bone kernel [just basic modules] from let's say 2.4 line requires 4MB of RAM - despite very similar size (~780kb).

My question is:

- Why there is such artificial and hard-coded limit in kernel source code?

- Why it was changed from 2MB to 4MB?

- Is it possible to change it back? In kernel source this is literally just simple "if ram < 4MB then error" - without any real kernel size check.

hansor··on JEP 408: Simple Web Server
Very interesting. I'm using the same approach in Python:

python3 -m http.server 8000

Help's a lot for quick development.

hansor··on Ghost Kernel
I was unable to find some basic information such us: What are minimum requirements? 386SX, 486? Pentium, Pentium with PAE/SSE2?

It seems that this is one of those projects developed and "tested" only inside virtual machine. Quite similar to recent port of 16-bit Unix to x86, which I was unable to boot on real 32-bit 386 CPU despite the claims.

hansor··on Oracle Cloud is unreachable
No.

I'm running some mysql and sqlite databases locally for my apps apart from Oracle DB. All for free.

hansor··on Oracle Cloud is unreachable
Huge mistake. I was surprised as well :)
