writing at https://hank.bond slowly working to those skills

currently my fun project is https://github.com/hank-bond/uix which is "visual agent harness" that uses rendered html to communicate between agent <-> human

hankbond··on Automating my 35mm film scanning pipeline
Very neat. I have a love-hate relationship with a unique type of digital sensor called the Foveon X3, which needs a particular (very sluggish and limited capability) software made by Sigma to convert the RAWs. Recently I have been using AI to create a converter that processes the RAWs in a similar fashion with some improvements.

This is one of those cases where its a means-to-an-end (I just want to take more photos without being bogged down) and less of a project for me to learn how to reverse-engineer and design signal processing pipelines. I am very grateful for what recent models are enabling me to do.

hankbond··on Automating my 35mm film scanning pipeline
Some aspects of the process seem more like labor than a form of self-expression. I think if you are into the limitations of shooting film photos it makes sense.

Can someone explain the implications of this?
hankbond··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
i guess, but to me its not so much "this is ai this is terrible" and more "i'm sick of hearing this phrase all the time". it's not that I never want to see an em-dash ever again, its just that i don't want them used every other sentence.

> takes important work off your plate so you get more of your time and attention back

Ok but I want the time and attention so that I can do important work. What bizarre marketing.

hankbond··on Ember-1
What made you choose/advertise using Doximity's benchmark? I use to work there and it was interesting seeing it pop up.
hankbond··on Flip Fluid on Flip Dots
That is so funny, I skipped over that and read the whole thing and then forgot about it when I finished!
hankbond··on Flip Fluid on Flip Dots
This was awesome! I was looking forward to a satisfying video of the panel in action tho... Did I miss it somewhere?
hankbond··on Biology might not be quantum, but its math is quantumlike
This is some of the coolest photography I have ever seen. Using multiple shots as a "discrete long exposure": I have never thought to do in this way.
hankbond··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
Given that that this policy is targeted against low-income foreigners I was under the impression it was meant to prevent downward wage pressure. Given the current political climate it may be more socially focused than I originally thought.
hankbond··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
It's my understanding that end-of-life care service workers are paid relatively little (at least in the US). It does seem like this policy would exacerbate those labor shortages.
hankbond··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
That's my bad, it's poorly worded. I meant something closer to "why would this practice of excluding low-earning foreigners be bad for the native Japanese".
hankbond··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
That makes sense (and seems undesirable). It's my understanding that Japan has a lot of near-ghost-towns with empty houses they badly need people to live in and improve (and presumably spend money in the area).
hankbond··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
> applicants for permanent residency will need to show that their annual household income exceeds the Japanese average

Can someone explain why they think this is a detrimental practice for native Japanese?

hankbond··on The engineering behind the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Very cool, big fan of these bite size explainers. Has there been more cycling recently? Are the sizes of the caverns tracked anywhere?

hankbond··on HuggingFace: Security.txt
shows a lot about the current state of the State Of The Art Alignment.
hankbond··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
very glib comment.

thinking about how to accurately describe the problem at hand and figuring out the simplest way to approach it takes a lot of effort well before you get to the implementation step of coding.

hankbond··on Aardman (Wallace and Gromit) Is Selling Its Original Movie Puppets
kind of like that japanese chalk producer from 10 years ago that math people were going on about?
hankbond··on I have a theory that software drives people insane
yes but also people-churn/attrition was likely lower too. it can really hurt your career to stay in most organizations more than 2 years because very few places devote any meaningful resources to growing from within. if you want better opportunities and more comp it often requires moving companies.
hankbond··on Aardman (Wallace and Gromit) Is Selling Its Original Movie Puppets
Might be a dumb question but are they actually made of clay?
hankbond··on A Stupid Idea for AI Alignment We Came with by Looking at Specification Gaming
It might be stupid, but so am I! I'm assuming that's why I thought this was clever.

What I like about this is that it feels like the new three rules are about focusing on the most successful human alignment technique of making the right thing the easiest. People will usually just do the easiest version of a thing they don't want to do so they can get back to doing what they want to do.

I don't know if that drive is universal or not tho. I have met people that experience pleasure from pain, but then again, is that actually pain?

hankbond··on iPhone Duo
IDK how a 2000 dollar phone would cannibalize macbooks more than a 700 dollar entry level macbook.

It's possible that the audience for anyone that would plug in their phone to a KVM setup is just too niche to care. Just seems like with computing being so expensive these days, I really want to get the most out of my devices.

Running android in a DeX mode is fine, but its still android. Now that MacOS is already optimized to run on mobile chips, it seems so limiting that it can't run on iPhones just because of customer segmentation.

hankbond··on GPT-6 Astra, looped transformers, and hidden reasoning
seems like an odd thing to trigger a nope given the title?
hankbond··on I haven't lost a customer service fight in seven months
I get it, it's easy to ask it to just touch up the language and split run ons. At this point in time, I'm of the opinion that "improving the clarity" at the cost of creating "a discernible style" is not a good trade off.

In most formal publications of The Before Times like newspapers and magazines, you did not want much of a writer's specific tone to come thru bc the organization had its own writing style. We used to value "correctness" because too much variance (without intent) made things hard to read—it was like context switching and came with a cost.

Nowadays though, so many people are already reading Claude writing day in and day out. I would venture to say that the opposite cost is being incurred now, where as soon as I start to see the same language patterns, some attention mechanism in my brain just starts to drift off. I literally cannot mentally focus on reading when the prose is 1:1 the same distribution as Claude. Some kind of fatigue happened by reading its output over and over day after day at work.

Anyway, just think about changing it up if you're interested in writing (even if it means your output is "sloppier").

At some point these phones are powerful enough that we need to be able go get a desktop experience that can run macOS. Why is a 600 dollar neo more capable for productivity than a 2000 dollar iphone with a much beefier chip?
hankbond··on I haven't lost a customer service fight in seven months
Great content! Inspires me to do the same thing since I am constantly dealing with things falling apart like this. I recently did one manually after putting it of for too long. Get Delta (airline) to go from "here is a 200 dollar bag to replace your 400 dollar bag we damaged" -> "Here is a 450 dollar eCredit".

I would try focusing on building a more unique style of writing, this feels like it went through heavy alignment to Claudes distribution. For the general audience maybe they aren't that sensitive to it yet, but for those that have to use LLMs at work, having to read more of it is grating.

hankbond··on GPT-6 Astra, looped transformers, and hidden reasoning
What a clear and well-written article. I have only a basic understanding of LLM architecture and was able to follow along and gain intuition the whole time!
hankbond··on Decapitating a MacBook (2025)
I have an M1 14" macbook with a broken screen. Would have cost $600+ to get it replaced so i just bought another refurbished one for $750. If i want to use the keyboard its kind of annoying to have to deal with the useless screen, so I would be open to just taking the dang thing off.
