> wouldn't the money required to build/maintain nuclear plants be much better invested in building out renewables and battery storage?

How about taking the money spent on fossil energies and invest it in both nuclear and renewables?

There aren’t usually numerous 5-minutes pauses in a football match, no.
hamper653··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
I wouldn’t know, I haven’t watched a single football match since 2018. As for short stoppage time, football use to have much less than, say, rugby. Was it different this year?
hamper653··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
Most football non-fans absolutely know that a football match is supposed to be two halves.

hamper653··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
> I specifically said this wouldn't be covered, because you set up the pin before you knew any investigation occurred.

But that’s just the thing: no investigation did occur. Being pulled aside by CBP doesn’t amount to an investigation. There can’t be an investigation without suspicion of a crime.

hamper653··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
What do you mean?
hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
This country may, or may not, ask me to hand over my burner phone for inspection. Then it may, or may not, deny me entry.
hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
To cross said border with my burner phone in my pocket and do whatever I need to do on the other side, why else? You do realise that is by far the most likely outcome, yes?
hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
> Is that a success?

Definitely.

> Maybe, if your data really is that valuable and a successful border crossing isn't.

Even if my data consisted entirely of cat pictures, it would be more valuable than successfuly crossing the border into a country that actively tries to invade my privacy.

hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
Lying about what? "I only bring a burner phone to border checks because I don’t want people like you to access my data“ is not a lie, and I fail to see how it could be interpreted as such.
hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
> you need to get the guy across from you to not find you suspicious.

What? No, who cares about that? Let him find you suspicious, what matters is that he doesn’t access your data. And it is not suspicious to cross borders (esp. US borders) with burner phones. As others have said, it is standard practice.

hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
> Probably different for the US though.

After cornering themselves into being labeled an unsafe destination (long overdue imho), the US are gonna have to learn being treated as such.

hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
Denied entry, why not. But detained?
hamper653··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
"I only ever cross borders with a blank phone because I don’t want you invading my privacy" is a perfectly valid answer. You can also add that it is your employer’s policy and/or your government official recommendation.

> a relatively benign nationalist

Are you a European, out of curiosity? I feel like South Asians don’t really have the ability to translate European history. Not that I’m some expert, but we can report good on-the-ground experiences about "relatively benign nationalism" and where it leads.

hamper653··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
> Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but if your country's safety depends on ability to block all forms of private person to person messages, your government has failed in one of its primary goals: providing safety for its citizens.

Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but "providing safety for its citizens" is not, has never been, and never will be a "goal" of any government on this planet.

> Any actual reasons or are we limiting them just because?

Just because they aren’t ready to make informed decisions, yes. If they were ready, they’d be called adults.

> My parents were sure that sitting too close to a TV ruined your eyesight. Should we get a law that forces people to sit at least X meters from the TV?

It is children’s freedoms that ought to be restricted. Not their parents’. If you don’t understand the difference, that’s a problem.

hamper653··on Czechia moves to ban mobile phones in schools from September 2027
> So many people have wacky ideas on how to raise kids these days.

Keep in mind that, while you feel like they’re millenials because you are one yourself, many of these people might be kids themselves. That’s the problem with children having access with the internet: there cannot be no boundaries anymore, everyone is an equal being their anonymous account.

hamper653··on Czechia moves to ban mobile phones in schools from September 2027
> books, radio, film, television, and game consoles

None of these tools is designed for the sole purpose of interacting with random people on the internet.

A child can get all the potential benefits of a phone from books, radio, film, television and game consoles — all the while not interacting with random people on the internet.

hamper653··on Czechia moves to ban mobile phones in schools from September 2027
Phones should be banned from children’s lives altogether. They have no benefit for them, only harm.

> You've got to remember that measures like this are limiting people's freedoms

Children’s freedoms ought to be limited, yes.
