hamoid··on World’s top supercomputer from ‘09 is now obsolete, will be dismantled
"At more than one quadrillion floating point operations per second..." - how fast is that when cracking typical passwords or mining bitcoins? If we have an encrypted drive, how long would it take to find the passphrase with it?
hamoid··on Can We Stop Drawing Trees on Top of Skyscrapers?
You are right, if one sees roots it doesn't mean there aren't other roots.

I think the difference is, South Finland was compressed by 1 km of ice during the last ice age, and the ground is pure granite that is blown up using explosives whenever a new building or road is built.

In those places I talk about, the dirt layer is extremely thin or often nonexistent. The photos I linked don't show that, but many trees are clearly sitting on pure red granite rock with just a little bit of dirt and moss surrounding the roots, in the middle of pale rock.

hamoid··on Can We Stop Drawing Trees on Top of Skyscrapers?
It called my attention that in South Finland there are pine trees which apparently are able to grow with their roots barely covered with soil. Some sit directly on hard rock with all their roots visible. I took two photos of this on 2006: http://pix.hamoid.com/finland2006/nature_is_a_huge_canvas.jp... http://pix.hamoid.com/finland2006/going_back_to_my_roots.jpg Those trees survive winter winds at -22F (-30C) with very little sunlight, although sometimes winds knock them down making a vertical wall out of the exposed roots.
hamoid··on Posterous Migration Guide: All known importers compared
I created a Python migration tool for Wintersmith (nodejs based static blogging): https://github.com/hamoid/Posterous-to-Wintersmith Maybe the code can serve as an example for other migrations.
hamoid··on Code.org – Dedicated to growing computer programming education
Friends of my age who were drawn into programming did so probably because when you turned on the (8bit) computer it was waiting for you to write a program. It was the default action. How would an iPad user be naturally drawn into coding? If you don't have friends around you who do it and serve as an example (or a classroom where you are presented with that possibility), I think few would come up with the idea of writing programs themselves.
hamoid··on Quitting LinkedIn
I still get their invitations to join a year after closing the account. I don't remember how many times I clicked the leave-me-alone button.
hamoid··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
I've been trying to delete individual photos and I think they limit the rate at which you can do this. I feel it's something like 10 photos per hour. If I try to delete more, they just pop back in on my Android phone.
hamoid··on Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos
I just found out about http://i-am-cc.org/ They propose releasing your Instagram images as CC. What I don't understand is what effect, if any, will that have on Instagram using your images for creating ads or for other uses. How would a CC license affect in this situation?
hamoid··on 4Chan Accepts Bitcoin
Everybody wants to hide their passwords. Does that mean everybody is a scumbag?
hamoid··on 'Everyone in US under virtual surveillance' - NSA whistleblower
From that clip:

"Where do you see this going in 5 or 10 years? I see it becoming a totalitarian state. An imperial president (a dictator). Unless we do something."

"It doesn't matter if you say 'bomb' or not. Everything is stored now."

hamoid··on 'Everyone in US under virtual surveillance' - NSA whistleblower
'Everyone in US', but not limited to the US, right? Services provided by servers in the States are used by people all around the world. Many communications started in other countries have their recipients in the US.

So isn't it more like 'A large part of the worlds population under virtual surveillance'?

hamoid··on The Next SoundCloud Becomes SoundCloud
Trying to find out which browsers support what audio features I found this site: http://caniuse.com/audio

It links to a sound file-format test, where I see Firefox plays only ogg and wav. That made me wonder if one could do mp3 decoding on the browser. It's possible: http://labs.official.fm/codecs/ but it sounds totally broken on Firefox on my Ubuntu.

So no Flashless SoundCloud on my Firefox yet, but it may soon change: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=799318

hamoid··on The Next SoundCloud Becomes SoundCloud
Why is Flash still a requirement?
hamoid··on Launching Recon.io (my side project) out of beta
I don't know if there is any plan to ever launch for Spanish speaking users, but the name sounds similar to a vulgar word in Spain. Not sure if US-Spanish speaking people would recognize it though.
hamoid··on Buy Nothing Day
The only way? I can conceive freedom without any buying and selling of things.
hamoid··on Lenticular.js - tilt-controlled images
I got a matte display to avoid reflections, but apparently someone found a workaround...
hamoid··on Ostrich Pillow - take a nap anywhere
I wonder if it includes flame retardant chemicals like other pillows do in some countries...
hamoid··on Why Google Should Customize your Gmail Login Page to Prevent Phishing
"3. This is really the tricky part as an attacker can wipe browser cookies at will."

No need for an attacker, I do wipe them at will. Every time I close the browser.

hamoid··on LeakedIn
Maybe no trickery hidden in there now, but that could change any time. Or sometimes. Or depending on IP, browser or OS.
hamoid··on Apple rejected Flattr… and it’s not the end
I did two years ago. Sold my iMac and switched to Linux. I think it didn't have that much influence on Apple, but I feel good about it, I get my stuff done, and that's what counts.
hamoid··on Real Shadow: jQuery Plugin that casts photorealistic shadows
Where is the cursor on my phone? :)
hamoid··on Video Stabilization on YouTube
I have only tried the one offered by YouTube, and not recently. I don't know if they have improved the algorithm in this respect, but for what I've seen in the past, the filter often creates a very eerie wobbly effect on the video, an effect that makes it look fake, like being underwater or drunk. It is slightly visible in the demo video if you observe the borders. This strange effect is totally absent on the link I posted, which I believe it's on a different level of quality. But I imagine it's computationally very expensive and can't be offered to millions of users for free.
hamoid··on 3x faster linux boot with e4rat
Would it make a difference with SSD drives?
hamoid··on Video Stabilization on YouTube
I wonder when will we get this quality http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~fliu/project/3dstab.htm
hamoid··on Demoscene: The Art of the Algorithms (documentary)
I just realized how much I was influenced by the demo scene in what I program and create. Great documentary.
hamoid··on Rick Falkvinge and his "a bit slow full-duplex 100Mbit" Internet Connection
You can mount /tmp in RAM, making the computer faster and avoiding ssd usage. I use it for rendering and manipulating large collections of files. Logs are there too.
hamoid··on Rick Falkvinge and his "a bit slow full-duplex 100Mbit" Internet Connection
I've edited over 100 videos on Kdenlive. I find it good enough.
hamoid··on UK government to monitor email and web use under new laws
The only way I would find this acceptable was if the government applied this to themselves. I want to be able to hear all their conversations, to know where they are, who they meet and talk to, who pays them money, how many bank accounts and properties they own. I'd like that accepting a job as a politician involved full transparency. If they were an example themselves then it might be easier to convince people about approving a law like this one.
hamoid··on Corporate Psychopaths [movie]
Can be watched at http://www.fisheadmovie.com/watch-the-movie typing 'fhmovie' when asked.
hamoid··on Israel to destroy Palestinians' solar panels
Because they like thinking about solutions to difficult problems?
