hambos22··on Claude Code skills for advanced context engineering techniques and patterns
I've been using these extensively since February/March. Built 3 apps with those skills and rewrote 2 large ecommerce businesses (ERP/CRM/MarketingOps/storefront/automations, hundreds of tables, dashboards with myriad forms) with huge success.

I even built a front end for an ancient ERP (90s tech, written in Delphi) and automated the hell out of it. Stuff that would have taken me months, maybe a year, of solo work got done super fast. I won't claim the output was always perfect, and I fried my brain reviewing the code, but the job got done.

Got bit by that on my 2 businesses. Took Cloudflare a while to update their status page about it.
hambos22··on Why developers are ditching GitHub for Codeberg and self-hosting alternatives
Nothing philosophical here. Whatever makes you productive.

I own the git, the runners, the registry etc and just use GH for backup. GH cannot interrupt suddenly my business.

hambos22··on Why developers are ditching GitHub for Codeberg and self-hosting alternatives
Github is an extra layer of backup, among normal backups.

[edit]

Notable reasons:

- Github runners went oftenly out of space & they were slow. With self hosted runners I don't have these issues anymore because I control the hardware.

Previously I was paying Docker Build Cloud/Depot for performance + Github Pro for extra minutes. Now it's zero cost, superb performance and unlimited minutes.

- I have a centralized registry with private packages and images.

- It's secure, I don't worry if I accidentally make a repo public or leak secrets. I control the access to it in network level.

- I own everything, in case something goes nuts (eg lose access to GH) I'm safe.

hambos22··on Why developers are ditching GitHub for Codeberg and self-hosting alternatives
It's been 9 months since I ditched Github.

Currently I self-host Gitea [0], use its registry for Docker, NPM etc and act runners [1] for github actions alternative, everything secured under tailnet.

I'm extremely satisfied with that setup. It is batteries included & fire and forget.

Now I use Github only as backup by mirroring my self hosted repos.

SEEKING WORK | Greece | Remote only | Ecommerce Architect / Marketing Operations

Looking for companies in the B2B/D2C e-commerce sector in niche markets.

I have more than 10 years of experience in the software and marketing aspects of B2B/B2C e-commerce (Europe & US). For the past 2 years, I took a deep dive into D2C as a Technical Co-Founder of a fragrance-related brand (https://yuma.gr), successfully positioning us in the premium market at the lowest cost possible, by developing the e-commerce and ERP platform in-house.

I can handle all aspects of e-commerce with a focus on growth. Examples include:

- Extensive Google & Facebook Ads automation at scale via their APIs

- Distributed bots for scraping millions of SKUs daily for dynamic pricing

- Deep & proven knowledge of e-commerce & ERP architecture & development

- Complex and custom-made solutions (e.g., in-house developed Klaviyo alternative)

- Creative approaches to streamlining internal operations

- Frontend performance & SEO micro-optimization

- Landing page optimization for conversions

I prefer long-term commitments and typically work on projects for 6 months to 1 year, as I treat each project as my own. Having developed my D2C brand to a technical level that now requires only maintenance and marketing, my schedule has become more flexible. I'm ready to help companies in different markets while expanding my skills and knowledge.

hambos22··on Sony ends production of Blu-ray Disc, recordable MiniDisc, and MiniDV media
I'm currently in the same position regarding 8mm digital8. After researching, I believe the best way to digitize these is to obtain a compatible used camcorder with a DV/Firewire port, then install a DV/Firewire PCI card to stream and record the video to your PC.
hambos22··on Who killed the rave? Late-night dancing falls into global decline
You are right, I used the wrong wording here. I meant crystals, not powder. I used the word 'powder' unconsciously because when I was raving, I would break those crystals into powder form to control the dosage better.

Anyway, regarding the difference between ecstasy and MDMA, from personal experience, I cannot remember a time when the effects were the same. Every time I took a pill, the effect was totally different from MDMA. MDMA provided a more 'pure' experience, whereas with advertised 'ecstasy' pills, I experienced hallucinations, memory loss, and a very heavy hangover.

hambos22··on Who killed the rave? Late-night dancing falls into global decline
In papers maybe, but in the streets, Ecstasy is the pill form of MDMA and is usually cut with other substances (e.g., speed, LSD, etc.). Therefore, when saying "Ecstasy," someone would expect a pill in a funny shape, whereas with "MDMA," they would expect powder.
hambos22··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
Thanks! The shop currently is Greek only and I disabled google translate sitewide because it breaks React (https://issues.chromium.org/issues/41407169)
hambos22··on Ask HN: What skills do you want to develop or improve in 2025?
I've been running my brand of scented products and cosmetics (https://yuma.gr) for 2 years now. 2 months ago we completed a rebranding and we're steadily gaining national consumer awareness of our existence as a brand.

From the top of my head, in order of importance:

1. Your perspective is unique - no one else shares your exact point of view. Try everything.

2. Master digital marketing: Google & Facebook Ads, Server Side Tracking, Google Tag Manager, and Analytics. Recommended communities:

- reddit.com/r/PPC

- measure.chat

3. Keep creative talent in-house (designers, developers)

4. Study pricing psychology (eg. kolenda.io/guides/pricing)

5. Good books with warstories:

* Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini

* The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing & of Branding (2 separate books) by Al Ries

6. Learn accounting essentials, each country has its own system

7. Provide solid support via multiple channels (phone, email, chat, social etc)

hambos22··on I tried every top email marketing tool
I want to share my experience with D2C (direct to client) brand email marketing. Initially, I was creating HTML emails with react-email and sending them through Postmark's broadcast stream. The open rates were very good - 40-50%, and it had solid deliverability.

When we wanted to improve our marketing automation, I decided to try Klaviyo because many people online recommended it. I spent around 500 euros and 3-4 days to integrate it with my custom ecommerce platform. After sending 2 campaigns, the open rate dropped to 15%. Later I discovered Klaviyo put us on a shared IP with not-so-good senders, so my emails were going to spam folder.

This made me think - how difficult would it be to build some of Klaviyo's features myself? Especially because I was already collecting customer behavior data like item views and checkout steps.

I spent 5 days building a custom solution with:

- Simple drag-and-drop email builder - Dynamic coupon generation with dynamic criterias - Template variables - SQL-based segmentation (<-- priceless!) - Automated flows (abandoned carts, welcome series, etc..) -SMS integration

I connected everything to Postmark and used their webhooks for analytics (opens, clicks, spam). Now I have a good in-house email marketing system that costs only $20 per month on Postmark, and my open rates are back to normal, as the profits too.

Sometimes the "simple" (hah) solution is the best one.

hambos22··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I'm building an inhouse ERP/CRM/warehouse mobile app/ecommerce platform/MOps for my small biz which I have with my wife (own brand of cosmetics, home fragrance, skin etc..) with the hope that it will allow us scale with the minimum employees, the maximum productivity and the lowest cost.

150+ postgres tables, a huge backend dashboard, an optimized storefront, Hasura, Go, React/Typescript/Next.js and a myriad of integrations.

Abandoned my professional career for this one to chase the dream and got sciatica while in the process :)

hambos22··on Psytrance Guide
Psytrance (specifically psychedelic, goa, progressive & minimal) is one of the few genres that can keep me in the zone for many hours. It feels like I'm in a creativity bubble connecting dots from everywhere, riding the chain of thought without interruptions. Combine that with a good pair of headphones (Sony wh-1000xm5) and a biscuit edible I find myself coding and VIMing like playing the piano.

hambos22··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
This.

I'm already doing kinda the same work with 2 established ecommerce B2B industry businesses, one in US and one in my country, and I'm getting payed a percentage of the gross profit from online sales & leads.

We have a competitive advantage because no competitor on these sectors has an "in-house" dev for ecommerce ops.

hambos22··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
Thank you!

Yes she still makes all the products (with help though now) as she finds a lot of enjoyment doing it and as we're trying to find shortcuts for our work, she found her ways on becoming more productive on the making process. At some point this whole thing became unmanageable, especially on Christmas.

Now the business operates with 3 people on board, me for the digital part, she for the art behind the brand and another one person full time for order management, client support, helping on the making etc..

And very soon we'll hire one more and move out of the house to a bigger space because we'll enable B2B as there is demand on these kind of products.

hambos22··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
Because I want 100% control and flexibility. It would take me more time to do this in shopify as it holds a lot of custom behavior and it has many automations on the backend.

Also with a custom admin dashboard we were able to scale a lot in our & employee's productivity

[edit]

I would use shopify for bootstraping temporary viral campaigns for niche products.

hambos22··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
I don't know if that counts, but I see it as a tech side project.

Last year I've built for my gf, a custom D2C (direct to client) ecommerce webapp [0] for her handmade products.

Then I started looking into PPC, tracking, social advertisement & marketing etc.. Now we are profitable avg ~8k / month only on retail.
