hamai··on The Legion Lonely
The root epidemics is of people only focusing on themselves.

Do voluntary jobs with sick and old people. Replacing your problems with other people's problems makes you think better.

Wonder if TPPA and CISA are related somehow.

Judging by my occasional reading of /r/bestofoutrageculture, overreacting is a thing for some time now.
hamai··on First release of gngr web browser
Sure it would, but isn't diversity a good thing too? Specially if you consider long term scenarios.
hamai··on The anarchic experimental schools of the 1970s
(Engrish ahead...)

I have great memories from a Montessori School I went to as a kid. Spent most of my childhood education there. It was a big house, each room was dedicated to a subject and students would change rooms, big shared tables and very few students per room. I also don't remember grades or at least no focus on it.

When I got to a normal school it was one big room packed with tiny individual chairs, all classes happened in that room, everything was easy, suddenly I was a "top student" and grades were a carrot to chase after. I didn't turned out exactly a Noam Chomsky but I find it funny he had this same experience while going from an alternative education to a traditional one.

I think he talks about it in this interview: http://www.chomsky.info/interviews/20130326.htm

hamai··on Tomahawk – A meta source music player
I noticed if I search "Zappa" it only shows one album that have artist name exactly "Zappa".

Would be nice if it also showed the other albums by "Frank Zappa"...

hamai··on A Brazilian Wunderkind Who Calms Chaos
It's both.

> Through the math competitions, Avila discovered IMPA, where Brazil held its Olympiad award ceremonies each year. There, he met prominent mathematicians like Carlos Gustavo Moreira and Nicolau Corção Saldanha, and while still technically in high school, he began studying graduate-level mathematics.

>In Brazil, Avila could relish mathematics without the career pressures he might have faced in the United States. “It was better for me to study at IMPA than if I were at Princeton or Harvard,” he said. “Growing up and being educated in Brazil was very positive for me."

That's as prime time as you can get on brazilian TV.

He'll get a lot of calls from every channel, newspaper and magazines.

hamai··on Game about squares
Simple and engaging. Nice graphics engine.
hamai··on Dear Internet: Let’s Demo The Slow Lane
Wouldn't prioritizing packets at routers create slower queues for low priority packets?

Murphy's Law tells me there's a good chance these low priority queues will slow down exponentially at random times. Routing nightmare if you consider DDoS and what not.

Yeah, you usually don't go asking strangers for a good dentist, you ask friends, or maybe their friends. That's the whole point of recommendations.
hamai··on My Roommate's a Genius
Mozart's symphonic works alone are more complex than what Gaga does. Take the 40th, the harmonies, the transitions, the sheer beauty of it. Despite the huge technical challenges of composing for a Symphony, still add that much beauty to it. And then there are vocal works, Opera, chamber groups... He was a huge influence on Beethoven, and a couple other cats... Mozart beats Gaga in complexity and inspiration. I feel funny having actually typed this comment...
hamai··on Amazon Prime Air
>There are more jobs around now than there was at the dawn of industrialization

But the population also exploded since then.[1]

I believe there are possibly no jobs for every one and a basic income of some kind should be considered. Just a way to avoid misery until people figure out their talents. [2]

I'm not a hater, though. I love the idea of Amazon Air, even though I'll probably never use it. Just to know it exists is a funny thing.

hamai··on Charles Bukowski on the Ideal Conditions and Myths of Creativity, Illustrated
If we're going to judge people's contributions by personal issues they have, nothing is of use anymore, including your advice.

How can we be sure everyone is "pure" before we consider their creations? Unless we all start living in a magic reality tv show, that is...

hamai··on We Need a Basic Income Guarantee
Minimum salary won't get you out of poverty either. It means 2-4h in a packed bus, work for someone else, see your kids only when they're sleeping, have no alternative but public health and education, which usually is hellish.

hamai··on Porn Films Don’t Get Copyright Protection in Germany, Court Rules
I think we are still living in times where some parents would rather deliver a person in a society where the chances of being a porn performer are reduced, compared to the chances of being a sports performer.
hamai··on A new type of piano keyboard: The Seaboard
I'm mainly a guitar player but spend most of my time on piano lately, and this instrument reminds me a bit of both. You can slide and vibrate like a guitar, but with the clear musical vision of piano.
hamai··on Drone ‘Nightmare Scenario’ Now Has A Name: ARGUS
User iwwr summarized well the problems with the "nothing to hide" argument:

"The ability to gleam private details about people is having some power over them. The entire modern theory of government rests on limiting and dividing up the power of those in power. With mass surveillance, that balance is broken. Not only do we have private details on individuals, that knowledge is held by a small and unaccountable elite, protected by state secrets.

Even if you live completely lawfully and morally and truly have nothing to hide you can either:

1. Unwittingly do something illegal (there are too many laws on the books for anyone to know they are completely innocent); or do something that can be construed as such, since the police and prosecutors can be fallible;

2. Still live in a society where a small group of individuals can exert blackmail and intimidation on a significant proportion of citizens. Even if that power would be rarely used, it creates an environment of fear. People start to be afraid to speak against abuse, those in power stand less for their own scrutiny."

Would be nice to use Youtube as sound too, but I guess it's to avoid legal issues.
hamai··on 12 Piano notes made visible for the first time
I guess they could be using "partials":

>Any complex tone "can be described as a combination of many simple periodic waves (i.e., sine waves) or partials, each with its own frequency of vibration, amplitude, and phase." A partial is any of the sine waves by which a complex tone is described.

hamai··on U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz Issues Statement on Aaron Swartz Case
USA requested the extradition of a young student[1] from UK over copyright laws, for sharing links. UK Home Secretary approved the order and the outrage ran the world. Without the attention the story got that young student would be in an American jail today.

It's relieving to read pieces like this. That last paragraph was spot on. The top comments got me laughing at "Those poor old bosses need all the help they can get".

Aaron was founder of Demand Progress, organization that actually fought laws like PIPA/SOPA, and many other things, and the laws didn't pass.
