haltingproblem··on New AI model can predict human lifespan, researchers say
True and truer by the day. Some version of clarkes law - sufficiently advanced tech is as comprehensible as black magic.

This can be a very useful tool especially for cherry picking long videos for a specific recommendation or book review. A second order use case would be running it in a loop to get all book recommendations from a podcast series or say patio11 posts.

One could argue that the massive productivity gains of the past 50 years have resulted in more full employment than ever in the history of mankind. Hunter gatherers were surely more unemployed than agrarians who were more unemployed than modern civilizational man.

haltingproblem··on The Long, Sad History of American Attempts to Build High-Speed Rail, Part II
Americans are never going to have significant transit upgrades - metro, long distance or short haul.

NYC is "building" err...painting new bus lanes to LGA (less than 3 miles) for 500million and will probably take like 10 years since 5 is the planned duration [1]!

Forget China, other countries in Asia and Western Europe plan and build whole new metros in that time for that cost.

Americans cannot build new things. Period. Maybe we should give up and focus on fixing/replacing existing infra. Like your cousin who cannot graduate high school...maybe he should just take up a trade??

haltingproblem··on LIBS confirms the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface
I thought we were having a perfectly reasonable discussion on India's development trajectory and misses, if you read down-thread.

But this is your sub so I will stay away from comments on this sub.

haltingproblem··on LIBS confirms the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface
People migrate. Especially when they are better opportunities. The founder of FB "migrated" to Singapore from the US. So did the Dyson guy from the UK and he then moved back.

Using net migration as a statistic for the health of a country is no more (or less) valid than the TFR or longevity or anything else equally plausible.

Q: Say that Sundar Pichai or Vinod Khosla had not left India? Would their impact on India larger or smaller?

I would say India is better off that they left, maybe you differ?

haltingproblem··on LIBS confirms the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface
Ah, you are not saying what I thought you were saying, actually the opposite.

Thank you for the clarification

haltingproblem··on LIBS confirms the presence of sulphur on the lunar surface
So what you are saying is that the numerous deficiencies are *intrinsic* to India (and Indians) by extension and will never go away? Is is about their DNA (nature) or their culture (nurture)?

What is about "a vast, diverse population into something they are not"? Are you saying India can not be a middle-ish income country like China/Thailand/Malyasia etc. I would like to believe that wise choices by the electorate and good leaders and some luck can transform the country (or any country). Japan/South Korea/Thailand/Malaysia all did it. Some of those countries are vast, some diverse and some had less advantages than India.

If you believe in the opposite that then are you not giving into the ideas in the "Clash of Civilizations" or worse "Genetics as IQ" crowd?

haltingproblem··on Most cancer screenings don’t extend life, study finds
Sorry for the delay in responding.

I actually do and most of it based on what I have have directly experienced with what, especially older doctors, counsel their patients.

There is a lot of literature on how doctors die [1], which also drives my beliefs.

I am also influenced and how weak the statistical significance is on evidence based literature on interventions and how often the interventions are difficult to replicate.

As always, please do your own research :)

haltingproblem··on My Caste
Facts are often problematic when they don't comport with your reality.

Care to rebut the facts instead of resorting to ad hominem attacks?

haltingproblem··on My Caste
The Prime Minister of India is an OBC and he got there through lifelong membership in the RSS a supposedly brahminical org. His competence as a politician and leader is unquestioned.

The President of India is a Tribal, which can roughly equate to the status of indigenous people the world over. Her speeches are legendary, especially the one where she presented the inequities of the Indian judicial system to the judges of the supreme court.

Meanwhile the darling of the left world over is the heir apparent of the opposition party, Rahul Gandhi, who is half brahmin-half Italian Catholic, but has no chance at the premiership.

What does one make of this?

haltingproblem··on Most cancer screenings don’t extend life, study finds
This is the negative expectation part of most medical screening that most analyses miss.

- Medical screenings themselves have iatrogenic effects,

- the false positives interventions resulting from screenings have further negative effects and

- finally the true positive interventions don't necessarily prolong life.

All in all very difficult (confounding) tradeoffs that are impossible to quantify and understand especially when the cultural pressure is to do something.

haltingproblem··on Mother is arrested in Bangladesh after son in US criticizes government online
None. But many people make it out to be a problem to be a Zionist or a Hindutva proponent.

Nationalism and pride for me but not for thee.

haltingproblem··on Mother is arrested in Bangladesh after son in US criticizes government online
Incredible that pointing out the sympathies of the poster lies with the party responsible for Hindu genocide during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war makes it Hindutva.

Does pointing out that someone's sympathies lies with banned pro-Hitler speech calling for the Holocaust in Germany makes one a Zionist?

Let's leave aside why being a Hindutva or Zionist is wrong.

This is a tragic story, thank you for sharing something so personal. Reading it feels surreal as if something out of a novel but recent discoveries prove otherwise.
haltingproblem··on Impact of changes in resting heart rate with age on all-cause mortality
Not quite. This article talked about increase in HR, if yours is stable then this article's finding do not apply.

RHR has a genetic component - mine has already been low. When I was fit and getting enough sleep and stress free for an extended period of time, it was even lower.

I think of it as baseline RHR and relative changes to that baseline. Relative changes can be negative (as in RHR goes up) or positive (as in RHR goes down due to managing or removing stress, cardio and sleep).

If yours is 85 and you have room for improvement, then by all means you should try to bring in some positive RHR changes?

haltingproblem··on Impact of changes in resting heart rate with age on all-cause mortality
Since taking on a new job exactly 2 years ago, my RHR has spiked by 5-7 points. The value of RHR as a predictor of longevity has been long known but there is controversy around the genetic vs. behavioral factors.

However, I was interested in the life expectancy reduction for every point increase in RHR. This study showed:

Every beat increase in heart rate from 1993 was associated with a 3% higher risk for all-cause death, 1% higher risk for CVD and 2% higher risk for CHD

Yikes.

haltingproblem··on Moravec's Paradox
Very interesting that Rodney Brook is linked to this in the Wikipedia article. Brook's subsumption architecture seems a logical evolution of this thought. Defer intelligence to the edges - the limbs - via subsumption behaviors. Also Brooks's famous paper "Elephants do not play Chess" [1] comes to mind. Fascinating to the see this various threads linked together. What a joy it would be to drop into conversations between Moravec, Minsky and Brooks!!

OP here, after I read the article, a better name for the article would be "How UN Projections are not worth the paper they are printed on" ;) but I had to honor HN guidelines.

On a serious note, given how many downstream analysis these numbers feed, should we not have more reliable forecasts or do we think this is the best we can do?

haltingproblem··on Churchill’s Famine: The killing of three million is a story waiting to be retold
No famines in India that resulted in mass deaths after 1947. If the difference was just governance, Indians vs. British, then the fault lies with the British. The Indian governments inherited British institutions in India but Indian leaders lacked administrative experience. They also did not have the resources of the British empire and had to face the mass horrors and disruption of partition.

All this lays the culpability at the door of the British for the Bengal famnine.
