hallqv··on Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early Experiments with GPT-4
What rock have you been living under for the last decade if you thought IBM would solve AGI? Watson was a complete disaster and they have zero AI talent in the company.
hallqv··on Sparks of Artificial General Intelligence: Early Experiments with GPT-4
Been pair-coding with gpt4 for the last week, it's definitely AGI..
hallqv··on Microsoft lays off one of its responsible AI teams
Love this insider story
hallqv··on Microsoft lays off one of its responsible AI teams
Good. AI ethics is 95% bs and generally a waste of time. Can be relevant for some edge cases in AI applications but it has been getting way too much attention/mind-share by the field as a whole.
hallqv··on Mastodon: Add support for incoming rich text
This feature would make mainstream adoption of Mastodon even more unlikely
hallqv··on My manager spent $1M on a backup server that I never used
Peanuts! Magic Leap spent $3.5 bn on a product no one used
hallqv··on “Clean” code, horrible performance
Great reply, thanks for sharing your experiences!
hallqv··on Does Google need a new CEO?
Sundar is perfect example of an incompetent professional CEO who exceeds at schmoozing and company politics. He's even ex-McKinsey...

Works for managing large corps through "business-as-usual" peacetimes but as soon as change & innovation is needed it's a no-go.

hallqv··on Noam Chomsky on ChatGPT: High-Tech Plagiarism, Way of Avoiding Learning
When will that old fart stop complaining...
hallqv··on Natural language is the lazy user interface
Very short-sighted post, future chat interfaces will of course guide the user in the right direction by asking the right questions, like a very skilled personal assistant.

Text interfaces will make most guis obsolete, every power cumputer knows cli >> gui.

hallqv··on Man worth $7.48B says Google should cut 28,000 more people after layoffs
I doubt it. Having too many employees is a huge drag on an organizations rate of innovation. Company politics start to run the show.
hallqv··on Man worth $7.48B says Google should cut 28,000 more people after layoffs
Haha, had the exact same reaction when reading the top comments here..

Google, along with rest of FAANG are massively over staffed, which they could get away with in a zero-interest rate economy when money was super-cheap, but not anymore.

They could all cut 70%+ without significantly hurting their revenue growth, which makes all the economic sense in the world in the current environment.

hallqv··on When McKinsey comes to town
Accenture is not even close to MBB in terms on hourly rates (~1/5) & “status”. They are a 3rd tier firm.
hallqv··on Comparing Google and ChatGPT
Way off. The pricing for gpt3 is $0.02 per 1000 tokens for the largest model. 1000 tokens is about 750 words.
hallqv··on Betting on things that never change (2017)
Basically what YC has been touting for years, focus on problems not solutions.
hallqv··on Is Elon Beyond Reproach?
What Elon is doing right now with twitter is two-fold:

1) Getting rid of employees who are not a fit for a high-pressure, performance focused, environment, either by firing them directly or them voluntarily resigning due to stricter working conditions.

2) Iterating on the product to increase revenues.

1) results in massive cost savings and 2) increased revenues (with time).

This very much needed since twitter has been a commercial disaster for many years and is heading towards bankruptcy without drastic changes.

hallqv··on Substitute certain overhyped programming terms with more accurate replacements
Machine learning = if statements? Now that is some proper BS
hallqv··on Creating a Culture of Innovation
The irony of having someone from SAP talking about creating a innovative culture
hallqv··on How to Do Hard Things
In my experience ACT is most useful form of therapy if you want to live a meaningful life and not just do emotional management
hallqv··on Real World Recommendation System
Anyone have recommendations (no pun) for more in depth resources on the subject (large scale recommendation systems)?
hallqv··on Launch HN: MutableAI (YC W22) – Automatically clean Jupyter notebooks using AI
Excellent, much neeeded product!
hallqv··on Lack of sunlight makes our cells store more fat (2018)
Yeeeah, idk how significant this is…

I live in the north of Sweden where we don’t get a lot of sunlight. Not many fat people here compared to other parts of the world where people get a lot more sun exposure.

hallqv··on The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021
Would I argue that the societal value of Amazon is actually huge (AUC-wise). Amazon positively impacts all of it's employees, consumers as well as other companies (my company wouldn't exists if AWS hadn't paved the wave for cheap cloud computing).

Anyway, it is certainly a mistake to equate generating socieltal value with financial gains. In many settings there is a strong positive correlation (Amazon IMO), others where it's weak (research) and yet others where it's negative (drug dealing).

hallqv··on Show HN: SpotML – Managed ML Training on Cheap AWS/GCP Spot Instances
Cool!
hallqv··on The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday
Good stuff! How many hours per week did you put in on average?
hallqv··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
Neural net: ”It’s all in the training data, stupid.”
hallqv··on IRS records reveal how the wealthiest avoid income tax
As many poster already pointed out the article is absolute rubbish due to conflation of wealth gain with income. Would love to get my hands on the actual IRS data though. Any ideas?
hallqv··on Google finally revealed how much personal data they collect in Chrome
Please tell me why this kind of data collection is harmful for the average user?

I love data collection, it makes the web sing!

hallqv··on I Shipped, Therefore I Am
You don't need to be Elon Musk to think hard about if you are optimizing for solving real world problems or something else. It's a habit of mind and the courage to change your circustances if you find yourself in a situation where it's not possible do things the right way (e.g. in a dysfunctional organization).
hallqv··on I Shipped, Therefore I Am
Excuses. What organization your work for is a choice you've made. You need to make sure you work for a well functioning one, few things are more important. If you can't get hired by one, start one yourself.
