halfjoking··on A new class of drugs for weight loss could end obesity
Sounds horrible. Why don’t people just learn how to fast?

Prebiotic fiber while fasting feeds gut bacteria so you won’t feel overwhelming hunger. Electrolytes/mineral-salt stop “fasting headaches.” With prebiotics and drinking tea my stomach doesn’t even growl while fasting, and I’m more productive. Most people just need to try and they’ll find it’s easier than they thought.

halfjoking··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
I’m bearish after the SEC aggressively went after LBRY token while not caring what FTX was doing.

Any useful case with ledgers being used in anti-censorship communication can be criminalized by the SEC.

Way around this is not use cryptocurrency. Use decentralized protocols like Nostr instead and the SEC can’t make up some bullshit to stop you.

FBI must have infiltrated ad blocker servers containing malicious url lists.

Never using an adblocker again.

halfjoking··on South Korea Again Smashes Own Record for World’s Lowest Fertility Rate in 2022
That goes for all East Asian countries, but Japan has slightly lower vaxx rate so maybe that’s why they gave up their lead.

Taiwan has highest vaxx rate of the three and is catching up:

Best trick IMO is to take prebiotic fiber while fasting.

That way your gut bacteria gets fed and doesn’t get desperate to tell your brain you’re starving.

Personally I don’t feel ketogenic state is reached from 16 hours. Feels like I need at least 24 hours, but usually do 36. Only thing I need other than water is electrolytes. I would get bad headaches without my mineral/pink salt.

halfjoking··on Watermark Remover (AI Powered)
There’s probably a huge market of people that haven’t kept up with the AI boom, and they don’t know free tools exist for this. HN isn’t that market.

I never used it for watermarks but llama-cleaner is one - it worked pretty well at removing text.

halfjoking··on Poll: Are startup founders a minority on HN?
You're right - I should have said founder or business owner instead of CEO for that option.
halfjoking··on Tell HN: Thank you for being fast, almost ad-free and text-only
Let's do a poll:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34507665

I'm curious how many people are starting or want to start a business here. I always assumed the percentage was pretty high.

halfjoking··on South Park Creators Land $20M in Funding for Their Deepfake VFX Studio

halfjoking··on Shadowbans are bad for discourse, and here’s why
This 100%. People are acting like HN has stricter moderation than reddit.

These people must not hold any views reddit tries to censor. I make a lot of anti-vaxx comments, and on HN my account has never been shadowbanned. I'm able to say what I want even though it might be downvoted and eventually become hidden.

On any mainstream subreddit there's a 90% chance I'll be banned for life. And 10% chance I'll get a shadowban - and 0% chance if a mod sees an anti-vaxx comment they won't remove it. On reddit you post in a sub mainstream mods don't like, and I get automated messages that I'm banned for /r/pics, /r/news, /r/cats automatically without even interacting with them. The only subreddits I can talk freely are removed, quarantined or don't have enough users for any site-wide mods to notice. Compared to HN it's an authoritarian hellhole over there.

halfjoking··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
The extremely unpopular link-banning policy makes sense in this context.

He wanted something to anger people right before the poll so it’s guaranteed he gets voted out.

halfjoking··on Twitter suspends pg's account [fixed]
Musk supporter here, downvoted proof here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33985682

I’m in agreement with all of you.

This is some BS that goes against all the ideals of an open internet. He’s not just being petty by banning competitors, he’s banning link aggregators. A lot of them are used for organizing political movements or needed for running a business.

This move means he doesn’t understand social media. Banning PG without even a link? That’s just icing on an authoritarian cake.

Apparently all Elon cares about is usage so hopefully this policy causes a huge drop. I have hope that he’ll quickly reverse course.

halfjoking··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Yeah one of the things on my list almost ruined my life last winter.

As in lose my job and be unable to socialize because I need a vaccine passport to enter a restaurant. All based on fraudulent lies that I couldn’t expose because I was censored.

halfjoking··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
So let me list Musk’s abhorrent censorship actions:

-Bans people impersonating him like Kathy Griffin

-Bans people who share internal communications at Twitter

-Bans people who post sensitive information like his address, phone number or private jet location

-Bans a few militant Antifa groups

Is there anything else? Because I’m not seeing the abhorrent part, especially compared to pre-Musk censorship.

Why should I be outraged now? When epidemiologists were censored leading to unvaccinated being banned from society last winter, no one made a fuss about it.

halfjoking··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
FDA has as much credibility as the SEC. SEC prosecuted LBRY token, while letting FTX steal people's money to fund fraudulent covid studies for the establishment. [1]

Those studies encouraged vaccination, which allowed the covid vaccines to kill millions of people from blood clots, cardiac problems and cancer. [2] They only tested the boosters on 8 mice [3], so I guess they really do are about animal welfare. FDA could kill millions of humans and get away with it, but if you support free speech and injure more than 10 mice you have to be investigated. Is that the takeaway from this story?

halfjoking··on Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run the Content Moderation Learning Curve
Musk has repeatedly said that inciting violence will be banned while other forms of speech will be allowed. So I think he has a coherent ideology, but it still depends on a judgment call. When Kanye says he "loves Nazis" one could make the judgment he's endorsing violence against Jews because the context involves the history of what Nazis did.

When Trump said on Jan 6th he wants his supporters to "fight" to "stop the steal" a lot of people took that as endorsing violence to storm the capitol. I think that's less clear-cut than Nazi endorsement, but other people disagree.

Main thing I care about is "covid misinformation" is no longer banned. So Twitter won't ban an epidemiologist who posts a clinical study saying mRNA vaccines lower sperm counts anymore. https://legalinsurrection.com/2022/06/im-an-md-suspended-by-... Bans like that were just absurd.

halfjoking··on Hungary used citizens’ Covid data to help the ruling party
Hungary at least had opt—in checkbox. US political parties are so much worse…

“Voter analytics firm PredictWise harvested location data from tens of millions of US cellphones during the initial Covid lockdown months and used this data to assign a “Covid-19 decree violation” score to the people associated with the phones.

These Covid-19 decree violation scores were calculated by analyzing nearly two billion global positioning system (GPS) pings to get “real-time, ultra-granular locations patterns.” People who were “on the go more often than their neighbors” were given a high Covid-19 decree violation score while those who mostly or always stayed at home were given a low Covid-19 decree violation score.

Not only did PredictWise use this highly sensitive location data to monitor millions of Americans’ compliance with Covid lockdown decrees but it also combined this data with follow-up surveys to assign “Covid concern” scores to the people who were being surveilled. PredictWise then used this data to help Democrats in several swing states to target more than 350,000 “Covid concerned” Republicans with Covid-related campaign ads.”

Where was Human Rights Watch on that one?

halfjoking··on Twitter is no longer enforcing the Covid-19 misleading information policy
My point was if vaccinated could spread covid, and that paper shows the viral load is just as high so they can.

Yes vaccinated with pre-alpha, alpha, and delta have faster viral clearance... but what about Omicron which is 99% of cases now? Maybe the study was done too early, but the results are very bad for vaccinated with Omicron.

"In other words: out of 100 boosted persons who catch Covid, 31 — or one-third — will be still carrying LIVE VIRUS on Day 10. Out of 100 unvaccinated persons, only 6 would test positive on Day 10 — over five TIMES fewer people." [1]

So even if you justified treating unvaccinated differently due to viral clearance (completely disregarding that prior infection, age or weight has much more influence), eventually you'd be wrong using that metric anyway.

halfjoking··on Twitter is no longer enforcing the Covid-19 misleading information policy
That's a pretty big claim that inoculation prevents long-term side effects. The viral load is the same between unvaccinated and vaccinated who get infected. [1] So if the amount of virus is similar, I'd assume the potential for damage would be similar unless there is some other evidence.

As for evidence the vaccine caused medical problems, it already exists. The CDC tried to block the v-safe data from being released.[2] It shows overwhelming safety signals which the public should know about to have informed consent.

Say whatever you want about effectiveness of Ivermectin, it's still an extremely safe drug used by billions worldwide. No one is going to win the Darwin award for taking it.

On the other hand, I vividly remember being told I would win the Darwin award for not taking an mRNA vaccine. If the vaccines are so great, why do non-covid excess deaths continue to rise while the media ignores it? [1] Until there is a reasonable explanation for these deaths, any novel therapy/treatment/vaccine should be taken off the market.

halfjoking··on Poll: Have You Caught Covid?
BCG vaccine isn't a covid vaccine, but it works better than any genetic shot IMO.

https://hms.harvard.edu/news/tb-drug-vs-covid

halfjoking··on Poll: Have You Caught Covid?
>So many people are refusing vaccinations that we will never see the end of this disease.

I'm one of those people.

I didn't want the vaccine after having long covid, because I believed natural immunity was much better than training my immune system on an earlier version of the virus. I was right.[1] Not only that - but unvaccinated were shown to have the same viral load even if they did get infected.[2]

So why are you blaming the unvaccinated? Right now there are more excess deaths than any time during the pandemic.[3] Even people who were provaxx are questioning why it's happening now.[4] If the vaxx was so great less people should be dying or was that not the point?

halfjoking··on Myocarditis after Covid vaccination: Research on possible long-term risks begins
That's what the CDC claims now.

Earlier in pandemic 196k post Covid patients were monitored a year... "We did not observe an increased incidence of neither pericarditis nor myocarditis in adult patients recovering from COVID-19 infection."

halfjoking··on Elon Musk Has Fired Twitter’s ‘Ethical AI’ Team
So he fired another truth arbitration team that uses quantitative analysis to justify censorship?

Let's say a bunch of tweets were trending that questioned the safety of the covid vaccines. Do these researchers think "how can we adjust the algorithm to promote more reasonable voices from health authorities?"

I don't see any other explanation. What they call "ethics" has to be a value judgement on which content is appropriate or not. And if Elon keeps his word of being a free speech absolutist, I think getting rid of these people would be first on his list of things to do.

halfjoking··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
You're worried about Europe, but how is the US a friendly jurisdiction for free speech? The Biden Admin targeted specific users on Twitter, and insisted those users were banned:

https://reclaimthenet.org/biden-admin-alex-berenson-twitter-...

What if Musk's Twitter doesn't listen to those requests? Don't you think the DOJ would apply pressure to Google/Apple to ban Twitter from the App Store? What happened to Parler? You can cherry-pick users "instigating violence" on any platform, including Facebook and reddit. The difference with those platforms is they censor who the government wants censored. It will be interesting to see Musk navigate both corporate media hit pieces and all political forces aligned against him.

halfjoking··on Ask HN: How bad is hiring going to be within the next year?
I don't know how so many people tolerate the BS of going through the interview process where they can switch jobs every few years.

I've never been successful with it. I've only gotten hired as a dev by a very strong reference or because an eccentric boss gave me a contract-to-hire opportunity. That boss posted an ad on Craigslist... I joked about it saying it was a scam, and he said you know it's legit because he also wrote the job posting on park benches and bathroom stalls. My favorite boss.

Lately I just save money because HR keeps threatening to fire me for being unvaccinated. I've been breaking company policy for a year, and saving money for a year, I don't give a shit about the job market anymore and I hope they finally grow balls and fire me. My startup only has $200 MRR but if they don't fire me before end of the year I'm out. And I don't want another job either, I've survived an 8 year gap without a real job before. I'd rather live off of rice/soup than deal with corporate software dev another year. And interviewing is the worst, way worse than the day to day, I don't know how you guys do it.

halfjoking··on A synthetic origin of SARS-CoV-2: What we know, and what we don't
Excellent work, but the author bringing up Wuhan and acting like it could be for legitimate research purposes like Boston’s recent paper was unnecessary.

A patented Moderna sequence was found in the virus.

https://arkmedic.substack.com/p/how-to-blast-your-way-to-the...

There’s no reason to trust “health authorities” when they have no interest in investigating these things or preventing the future release of deadly man-made viruses. Instead they created a biomedical police state, took away rights and freedom of travel, then said “whoops I guess our vaxx never stopped transmission.” Even worse it causes heart problems and clots, yet kids who never die of Covid should take it too… we think it’s so important we’ll add it to the childhood vaccine schedule.

Why does anyone believe a word the CDC/FDA says anymore? I have no idea.

halfjoking··on Kill Bill – Open-Source Subscription Billing and Payments Platform
Yeah I was too negative. Vendor lock-in sucks so I'm glad someone is tackling it and I should have started with that.

But I think people shouldn't hold back criticism either just because something is free or open source. Stability AI (Stable Diffusion) just sold out and took $100 million from investors after being open source. Even if they're providing something altruistically now you never know if that will change after VC, buyout offer, or some other event.
