halfcreative··on Reasons to switch from Windows to Linux
In my experience, ads appeared in the start menu as well as ad notifications on occasion. I removed the ads from the start menu but after an update some of them seemed to return. Similar experience with the ads in the notifications tab. Although a minor experience to re-disable the ads, it was enough to get me to switch. I paid good money for windows, only to get MORE ads than the free alternative
halfcreative··on Epic launches anti-cheat support for Linux, Mac, and Steam Deck
Awesome! So what does this mean for me? Will I be able to launch Apex legends without getting booted right now? How long will i need to wait for my favorite games to start working?
halfcreative··on Are you playing to play, or playing to win?
>playing dirty is a form of cheating. this is the scrub mentality that the article talks about
halfcreative··on Design Principles: An Open Source Collection
Am I missing something? The idea behind the site makes sense to me, to collect the design principles from all over and put them all in one place, but I feel like they stopped short of being something "great" when they decided to go not much further than just uploading the data to be looked at. I would have liked to see new data compiled from the aggregate of the collected information like most common words/phrases, maybe collections of principles similar in nature, even silly things like how many animal themed phrases are involved.
halfcreative··on On Coding, Ego and Attention
I feel like for me, reading and writing articles like this are a major source of distractions. I often find myself reading articles like this, lessons of self-improvement and tips of motivation and ways to be a better programmer, instead of doing what actually makes me a better programmer (actually programming). To extend upon the article, I feel like one of the easiest distractions from self improvement is constantly reading about self improvement. Not to say that the lessons in these articles are a sham, but that there's a point where the idea of and dream of improving yourself becomes a dangerously stealthy distraction.
halfcreative··on A harassment campaign on Goodreads
Why shouldn't they? I think it's ridiculous to be able to review something which you have not experienced and I don't see a good reason why they should be allowed. The lockout should be until at least one person (ideally more) have experienced the fully released product.
halfcreative··on A harassment campaign on Goodreads
Pre-release reviews is a problem on more than just books too. I wish there were more systems to verify that you've at least bought the book, movie, or the product in general before you can review it.
halfcreative··on EA is permanently banning Linux players on Battlefield V
I wish I understood better how anti-cheat works. When anti-cheat software gets flagged while running on linux, is the cause of the flag a viable route for other cheats? I'm so unfamiliar with the mechanics of anti-cheat that I'm not even sure if I'm asking a proper question.
halfcreative··on Amazon threatened to fire employees for speaking out on climate, workers say
It seems like they were threatened termination for disobeying the new policy they implemented as stated in the article.

>"The new policy requires staff members to seek permission from Amazon prior to talking in a public forum while identified as an employee."

Not really saying anything about if the policy is ok or not, just that it doesn't seem like this is really about climate change but rather speaking out against the company

halfcreative··on Almost everything on computers is perceptually slower than it was in 1983 (2017)
I don't understand the purported problem this man is facing when using google maps. Like step by step what is going on that google maps erases what you're doing. I've never had a problem as described, and seeing these other comments mkaes me question whether I'm using google maps in a drastically different way than the common person, or if the people complaining about this issue is using it weirdly, or if theres some different version of google maps that we are using.

if I open up maps, type in the location i want to go to, click 'directions' and add my starting location i click and drag all over and move the map around, zoom in and out to look at the route and my info does not disappear. I click add a destination if i want to add a destination. if i want distance from the center of town, I change the starting location of my directions to the center of town.

For the people who face issues with google maps, can they please describe to me what you are trying to accomplish and the steps you take that results in the info on screen disappearing? I'm genuinely curious on what I might be doing differently to have such a seamless experience vs the awful experience described.
