halayli··on Toni Morrison's Rejection Letters
Not taking sides but this is argument from authority fallacy. Whether she is a Nobel Prize winner or not is irrelevant to answering OP's comment and whether her books are page turners or majority find them uninteresting.
halayli··on Full-scale file system acceleration on GPU [pdf]
This sounds like projection.
halayli··on The rev.ng decompiler goes open source
They are now offering a free version: https://binary.ninja/2024/02/28/4.0-dorsai.html
halayli··on The rev.ng decompiler goes open source
your observation was spot on and your question was answered by the ceo. People on hn can be oversensitive.
halayli··on Distributed Coroutines: a new primitive soon in every developer's toolkit

  async def mycoroutine():
      await operationA()
      await sleep(24 * 60 * 60) # wait 1 day
      await operationB()

The article lacks an example demonstrating how it can solve a real problem. I felt the authors aren't able to come up with such a concrete example nor does it talk about its overhead and global state atomicity.
halayli··on SQL is syntactic sugar for relational algebra
Relational algebra IR is implemented in MonetDB and discussed in their paper. Definitely worth reading.

Not trying to be picky but pure relational algebra doesn't map to SQL and IMO it's not a good idea to attempt to do that due to the fact that relational algebra treats tuples as mathematical sets (ordering/uniqueness matters) while SQL does not(and has to deal with nullability).

halayli··on What does Alan Kay think about LLMs?
Superstition is assuming a causation when you identify a correlation.
halayli··on S3 is files, but not a filesystem
I don't know why you are being downvoted, what you said is true and confuses many newcomers.
halayli··on An interactive guide to Fourier series (2022)
I recommend learning complex numbers and the problems they can solve before touching on the main topic, Fourier series.
halayli··on Useful Uses of cat
It's not more modular to use cat instead of head's filename argument. OP invented their own definition of modularity to fit their narative and bias. What are you going to use if you need to tail? cat a 1GB file through the kernel to reach tail's stdin? You're not just spawning an extra process you're copying the data from one process to another via read/write system calls for no good reason.
halayli··on Show HN: PRQL in PostgreSQL
They can ask chatgpt to generate the SQL query and use the SQL output that everyone is familiar with rather than use an abstraction that is prone to versioning and behavioral changes and will consume everyone else's time to go learn a new language and become profficient in it.
halayli··on Significant features introduced for recent versions of Perl
I don't know why you're being downvoted. It's the truth. Back in the 90s many of us invested hundreds of hours mastering Perl and post 2008 ended up using Python/Ruby/etc more frequently for various reasons and now speaking for myself I can barely decipher a line of Perl. It's syntax is extremely hard to maintain in memory when you stop using it.
halayli··on TinySA – small spectrum analyzer and signal generator
keysight(leaders in the industry) released a model(EDUX1052A) for hobbyists starting at $500.

https://www.keysight.com/us/en/support/EDUX1052A/oscilloscop...

They also have DSOX1202A & DSOX1202G for ~$1k -> ~$1.2k

halayli··on Rook to XSS: How I hacked chess.com with a rookie exploit
It's painful to play on lichess due to wide spread cheating and people opening new accounts. I've been playing on chess.com as a paid user and having much better experience. I don't know what changes chess.com made in the past year but they are definitely moving in the right direction.
halayli··on CVE-2023-40547 – avoid incorrectly trusting HTTP headers
it has nothing to do with whether the S is present or not. Not sure you understood the problem.
halayli··on Two File Descriptors for Sockets
ah yes that's because close() closes the file descriptor but shutdown does not. You can have a socket that is shutdown on both ends that has a valid fd.
halayli··on Two File Descriptors for Sockets
The difference is that the callee working on the fd it received need to check if fd's type is pipe or socket and call close() or shutdown(fd, 1) accordingly.

This is not a pipe vs socket issue only but a penalty for having a vfs abstraction. Files, pipes, sockets, and more all have stream like behavior but they can vary widely and many cases demand leaking the vfs abstraction to check what's the fd type.

halayli··on Adult ADHD Is the Wild West of Psychiatry
Do you have ADHD?
halayli··on Diskprices.com makes $5k/month with affiliate marketing
At least I can fully access the page content and doesn't ask me to register to read the rest of it.
halayli··on White space does matter in C23
Whitespace in this context is used as a token separator. Where you place the space is of course important. --i is very different than - -i but the same as - -i.

When people say "whitespace matters", what it means is whether the meaning changes when you have more than 1 not more than 0.

halayli··on Show HN: BSON Extension for Postgres
JSONB is not optimized for compression.
halayli··on How the append-only btree works (2010)
You're comparing apples and oranges. Anytime you write/modify on an SSD you're writing on a new page. So you might as well leverage this behavior to your advantage. It has several benefits when it comes to implementing transactions.
halayli··on Ptext: A Nano-like text editor built with pure C
they aren't part of whatever standard yet they are still pure C. Pure C is not a well defined term but it refers to the fact that only the C language was used for the project. Which C version and whether other libs have been used is not part of the term.
halayli··on Unveiling secrets of the ESP32: creating an open-source MAC layer
There are a lot of interesting sensors out there. A good start can be by picking a sensor you're interested in and use it for monitoring. It can be as basic as temperature monitoring, or gas/CO2.
halayli··on Unveiling secrets of the ESP32: creating an open-source MAC layer
You don't need anything. Plug it into your machine's usb, open arduino ide(or their web ide + agent) and upload any of the examples that arduino ide comes with and use its serial monitor to debug/read whatever output you write on the esp32's serial. This applies to windows/mac/linux.
halayli··on Paper vs. devices: Brain activation differences during memory retrieval (2021)
I am not sure I agree with their participants sampling approach. Memory and particularly short term memory is highly impacted with people that have adhd/depression/bipolar. I am surprised they went with random participants without assessing their mental states and taking that into consideration.
halayli··on Relative shell script includes with realpath on FreeBSD
Here's a good explanation from SO that I happen to have in my bookmarks:

halayli··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
He's the reason why the middle east has been in shambles since the 70s.
halayli··on Google Drive misplaces months' worth of customer data
No, it definitely doesn't sound like that and it's not about rights. Your landlord cannot go and remodel your apartment and ruin your possessions without your approval of the changes they are about to make.
halayli··on Beej's Guide to Interprocess Communication
Younger crowd might not understand but back in late 90s early 2000 it was rare to find quality content/tutorials that are beginner friendly. Beej's Guide was one of the best quality content back then and even after 20 years it still stand in the first place in the topics covered.
