hadtodoit··on Tesla superfandom becomes toxic, negative for electric revolution [op-ed]
Are you forgetting that guy, completely unprovoked, told Elon to shove the submarine up his own ass?
hadtodoit··on Uber lays off 3700 employees via Zoom
I'd be happy with the generous severance package and move on with my life. But do you honestly care about a generic exit interview? Do you think any employer cares that much? Seems like a total waste of time for everyone involved given the circumstances.
hadtodoit··on Facebook uses 1.5B Reddit posts to create chatbot
FB has an unlimited budget, a financial incentive, and reddit basically handed them the data. This is not even close to overkill.
hadtodoit··on NHS open-sources contract tracing iOS and Android apps
I'm not making any leaps, I provided a link that explained it. I have no trust in Israel to begin with due to their uncomfortable control over US politics, this was just further evidence to support that decision.
hadtodoit··on California voters to get mail-in ballots for 2020 election
HN is about one step away from becoming reddit with this type of baseless speculation. There is no indication this administration wants to suppress votes, the president has explicitly said he wants to institute voter ID's to protect the security of our elections, but you're going to take the word of a WP reporter who've perverted every statement he has ever made? The opposition is suspiciously against voter ID by the way.
hadtodoit··on California voters to get mail-in ballots for 2020 election
>You know why there's no fraud? Because it's a crime

When has the law ever stopped bad actors? It's naive to think fraud doesn't exist when at least a dozen times each election there are some kinds of issues getting votes counted.

I wouldn't trust anything coming from Israel ever. Their government appears to have a mandate for installing backdoors, evidenced by the scrapped Iron Dome project which they wouldn't hand the source code over for.

Thankfully the US isn't a communist dictatorship
hadtodoit··on Facebook uses 1.5B Reddit posts to create chatbot
It's not obvious? Facebook has enough of your conversations to fingerprint your writing style. Now they can de-anonimize your reddit account and serve you even more personalized ads.
hadtodoit··on The average consumer loses over $150 a year renting a router from their ISP
Comcast/Xfinity broadcasts their own Wi-Fi from the routers they rent to you. That is the backbone of their mobile phone service, with Sprint towers as the fallback for out of service areas. You are essentially paying (electricity/modem) for the privilege of hosting their mobile network.
hadtodoit··on Seoul's full cafes, Apple store lines show mass testing success
We didn't even have FDA approved test kits until last month, I imagine that similar agencies exist in Japan which required government intervention to expedite the process. I know you want to believe they had nefarious intentions but bureaucracy and incompetence are often the culprit when it comes to government.

In the US it wasn't just a matter of getting tests made, but getting all the various states and private testing centers connected so the federal government could aggregate the data. Smaller countries or those with socialized/public healthcare had an easier time at this because their systems were already unified. Tiny countries like South Korea trying to talk down the US for not getting tests out as fast is them is humorous. California alone has greater landmass and 80% of SK's population.

Besides that, Japan is still doing very well despite their population density meeting/exceeding many major hotspots. And the US is likely out of the woods, we should definitely be back to normal next month.

hadtodoit··on The largest public companies taking payroll loans meant for small businesses
Unfortunately I agree here. We're not out to save as many small businesses as possible, but jobs. If we want so save small businesses, we need to earmark more money for small businesses only; especially should this extend beyond April.
hadtodoit··on Seoul's full cafes, Apple store lines show mass testing success
Japan was certainly trying to save the Olympics but when it became clear nobody would attend, numbers "skyrocketed" the same way US numbers did, ie. we started actually testing people and confirming what everyone else already knew, that this thing spread like wildfire.

Testing isn't even useful at this point, we should operate under the assumption everyone has or will have it, and just treat those who are having complications. You don't need to get tested to know you have a cold, just deal with it.

hadtodoit··on Covid-19’s impact on Tor
I still buy and sell all my cars on craigslist, I don't think I've ever dealt cars elsewhere.
hadtodoit··on Seoul's full cafes, Apple store lines show mass testing success
I think you are diminishing the amount of traffic between Europe and US on any given day. Closing the borders to Europe may very well have saved us from catastrophe. Numbers exploded everywhere in March.
hadtodoit··on Seoul's full cafes, Apple store lines show mass testing success
In that case I wouldn't trust any country not to fudge the numbers. As far as Japan goes, I believe the numbers are close enough. They have a very high population of elderly and smokers. People would be dropping like flies and making a lot of noise about it if the numbers were far worse.

Social distancing, wearing masks, staying home when sick, cleaning all fomites frequently are things the Japanese were doing before this pandemic culturally, I imagine those actions are in over drive now.

I'm reminded of when the subway tunnels in Japan flooded and the water was so clear you'd have thought it was a swimming pool. Even Chinese netziens commented on how absurdly clean Japan is when the pictures emerged.

hadtodoit··on Malawi legalises the growing, selling and export of cannabis
IIRC rice isn't very nutritious, it's just calorie dense. In that regard adding hemp seeds to your diet may do more in the long run.
hadtodoit··on Japan's PM to ask all schools to temporarily close
I believe I did answer your question. Washing your hands will always be better than not. Many modern buildings also have automated water/soap/towel dispensers. And you can always use the towel to open the door.
hadtodoit··on CDC declined to test new coronavirus patient for days, California hospital says
The US did quarantine and test arrivals from Diamond Princess. Those who showed no symptoms have been sent home afaik and are under self-quarantine for a couple weeks.

It is ironic that South Koreans would be worried about Americans and Japanese given the state of corona in SK.

hadtodoit··on Japan's PM to ask all schools to temporarily close
Not sure if you've been to Japan but they have some of the cleanest public facilities I've seen in spite of all the traffic. I'm sure people are coming through multiple times a day to wipe down all fomites.
hadtodoit··on Drug dealer loses codes for €53.6m Bitcoin accounts
Don't make light of cannabis, it is a drug and like all drugs has side effects. Even moderate use can seriously retard and arrest brain development in teenagers and it can accelerate the onset of schizophrenia in those who are at risk. It's also been associated with lack of motivation, focus, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety among a host of other issues later in life.

Fully grown adults should be able to choose to do what they want but people who peddle drugs to children deserve nothing short of the death penalty.

hadtodoit··on SpaceX launches more Starlink satellites, misses booster landing
The soft-launch of service this year is only expected to cover northern Canada and the south of South America.
hadtodoit··on Kodak Alaris warns the TSA's new airport CT scanners can damage undeveloped film
Flying out of SFO, the security gave me a heads up about putting aside film. They are not TSA, but at least they had been briefed.
hadtodoit··on Kodak Alaris warns the TSA's new airport CT scanners can damage undeveloped film
Personally I enjoy the mystery of taking a photo and waiting to see how it turned out, there is a charm to film photography that isn't captured by digital for me. Getting photos developed is equally exciting, and having the physical copies to hand out or place in an album is nice. It's a dying art, but being held together by enthusiasts.
hadtodoit··on How Popular Is “Sign in with Apple”?
You seem confused. Apple Pay works using the exact same tech as contactless payment cards, a widely supported standard.
hadtodoit··on The Yang Gang and Its Bots
With regards to the paper you posted, I don't think it does enough to escape the fallacy of correlation/causation. It stands to reason that a news event implicating refugees for a crime will attract anti-refugee sentiment, likewise why would such sentiment spread to unrelated news posts? Facebook has already been caught prioritizing controversial content in user news feeds to increase interaction. Facebook will quickly learn a user that displays such views interacts more with said content, and display more.
hadtodoit··on iOS First Impressions (2018)
As always, experiences may vary. I actually prefer that Photos does not save state as I have never opened the app looking for the same photo twice in a row.

He wasn't arguing the current interpretation of the law as much as proposing an amendment.

I don't think that HN, nor the community at large does as much as say twitter or reddit to stifle opposing points of view. Relegating extremist to their own echo-chambers is a good way of proliferating their beliefs. Were their ideas exposed to the world where they would have to defend them, they may be dissuaded from holding such extreme beliefs, or a passerby may see the flaws in their argument.

hadtodoit··on The Yang Gang and Its Bots
Some Senator who's name I can't recall was arguing otherwise. He said something to the affect of, if social media companies, or websites in general want protection under the law from content generated by their users, then they should not be able to dictate what their users can and cannot post barring illegal content.

It's an interesting argument regardless of what you believe, but certainly your first amendment rights don't currently extend to Twitter.

hadtodoit··on Show HN: I built a community for women entrepreneurs and makers
Anecdotally I would disagree, I know plenty of men and women who just can't find the right words when it comes to the opposite sex but have no trouble navigating social situations otherwise. I'm skeptical that you've never come across such people.

Sexual tension occurs in all situations that pit people together for any significant length of time, regardless of sexual orientation. It is by definition a result of self-control, I'm not sure your definition of sexual tension is the same as mine based on this statement. It is unexpressed attraction usually because the situation may be inappropriate.

You seem opposed to the idea of gender-exclusive spaces. So I have to ask, do you disagree with women's only gyms? Men's only? Gender specific locker rooms?
