hacksonx··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
This here for my personal use http://hacker-news-card-ui.herokuapp.com/
hacksonx··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
Speaking of redesigns, am I the only one hating the material design feel added to google chrome settings?
hacksonx··on How Microsoft brought SQL Server to Linux
My home desktop (Intel Pentium G645) doesn't support virtualization and I guess this means I can't run this.
hacksonx··on Without Flash the current web tech stack might look different
Speaking of flash & it being used to build entire websites, this we hear made it hard to index those sites. I remember when I was at university, the university network didn't work with android devices because it worked over a proxy and Google/Android weren't fond of a proxy server because it prevented them from tracking the user. Lots of tools have died solely because they prevent bigger companies to flourish. Not saying Adobe aren't big but you know Google and Apple are massive.
hacksonx··on Rankings of required skills in software development job listings
On Firefox mobile it's not about getting everything to work, just basics because the page is quite useless on that browser.
hacksonx··on Replacing My Kid’s College Fund with a “Start Something” Fund
It's not completely useless ... Yet, but with the shift the world is taking (globalisation, *robotisation and move to renewables) it will be. Some engineering degree too will put not have a place in the future.
hacksonx··on Jefferies gives IBM Watson a Wall Street reality check
Fundamental software problems here. Probably the reason why software is being marketed as service more and more. IBM might be moving a little too fast, especially from a sales perspective but their systems offer features that will define the future.
hacksonx··on CSS and JS code coverage in Chrome DevTools
My sentiments exactly, especially since we as developers aren't in one team with system admin so they do not seem to understand our struggle.

Guess I will only be able to comment on these when I get home. The full screen screenshot feature is going to be a welcomed addition. I will especially have to teach it to the BA's since they always want to take screenshots to show to business when design is finished but test is still acting up.

hacksonx··on It is as if you were doing work
I typed my work username twice. Shows how simple social engineering can be.
hacksonx··on Euro MPs back end-to-end encryption for all citizens
What do laws like these for partner but not member states to the EU like Turkey mean?
hacksonx··on Show HN: Get Paid to Build Your Next Side Project
So in essence the product's growth will depend on how well I built it, how much marketing I put into it and lastly how many more people will want this in the future? Nothing new there.
hacksonx··on Ask HN: Where do you host your API endpoint?
I have a few services running on Heroku. Not a favourite amongst many but I've been using it for a while and it works well for me.
hacksonx··on Flipped Iceberg (2014)
Firefox mobile + *Ublock = bliss.
hacksonx··on WebAssembly: Mozilla Won
I think, I could be wrong but I think he/she is referring to what the European Union did with Microsoft and asked them to include a way that asks new Windows users to select a default browser and offer them choices besides Internet explorer.
hacksonx··on Going for the 5 hour workday
Just finished a 2 month project without having a single meeting with business and I must say, things are much better. Business never told me directly what to do and I never told them directly how long something would take me. Best approach ever.
hacksonx··on Nile.js – A Peer-to-Peer Live Video Streaming Library built on WebTorrent
But what about spot betting during a sports game?
hacksonx··on Ask HN: What are some examples of successful single-person businesses?
When he sold he had plenty of employees but still owned everything.
hacksonx··on Google starts tracking what people buy in physical stores
Many ways are being suggested as workarounds for maintaining annonimity about where one spends their money. Fact if the matter is, if the money leaves your account in batches these guys will know. So Google, and others, in the age of bitcoin will just partner with banks.
hacksonx··on Ubuntu 17.04 review
I might start using Ubuntu pure again. I honestly never understood the switch to this interface on desktop. Microsoft tried it on Windows 8 and failed.
hacksonx··on Font Awesome 5
I work for a corporate. A South African based company with inroads' in England and the USA. Should I donate in my personal capacity or ask the company to contribute? Yes, we use fa on our front-end projects.
hacksonx··on FBI director: Cover up your webcam
Please spell it out for me. Seems being 0001 1001 years old hasn't opened up my mind to such basic concepts. Also, what about the front camera on my phone?
hacksonx··on Many Kenyans refusing basic income experiment
Fixed. Thanks.
hacksonx··on Many Kenyans refusing basic income experiment
Perhaps not the biggest reason behind the refusal but the fact that it is mentioned warrants discussion. Che Guevara is said to have travelled to the Congo to train Guerrilla militia there and stopped when instead of focussing on training, the people focused on voodoo magic to protect them. A similar phenomena was witnessed in South Africa with the Marikina massacre of 2012, where miners believed that herbs provided by a witchdoctor would make them invisible.

The best approach to such situations is, as the organisation is following, to educate the people. It might be hard with low literacy levels but it's possible, especially for a cash studded organisation such as theirs.

edit: Fixed Gorilla to Guerrilla

hacksonx··on Some bad Git situations and how I got myself out of them
I moved to git at the begining of this year and I must say that I miss SVN. But everyone keeps telling me that git is better so I'm sticking to it.
hacksonx··on Some bad Git situations and how I got myself out of them
I think the command we're looking for is 'rm -R name_of_directory'
hacksonx··on How to get people who installed a leaked build to stop using that build?
I was the first to upgrade from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04 in the office. I left my computer unlocked with a wallpaper slideshow on the desktop and when I returned everyone asked where I got my wallpapers from. Even though they were getting prompts to upgrade, they didn't until they noticed a changed. And I'm talking about developers here.
hacksonx··on When you change the world and no one notices
Invisibility cloaks.
hacksonx··on Principles for Programming Languages for Learners
At times even the power that an IDE brings aren't put into full use. The refactoring functionality in most IDE's makes fixing repeated typos easy but people still leave their code like that.
hacksonx··on The Price of Solar Is Declining to Unprecedented Lows
An interesting finding this. The national power provider in South Africa (Eskom) has decided to go against the tide and focus on coal powered power stations. They have concluded that they won't be buying power from independent power providers which for the most part generate renewable energy. Maybe such researches and a more firm stance from institutions such as the IMF will help us in this regard.
