hackrnusr··on MIT 24-Hour Challenge
I believe their policy statement on admissions as much as I believe former MIT president Susan Hockfield's reason for stepping down from her position in 2012.

Also, don't forget that Susan Hockfield never referred her dean of admissions at MIT to the attorney general's office to face prosecution on wire fraud charges after it was discovered that she had fabricated a medical degree from a medical school that she had never attended on her resume.

hackrnusr··on Kopia – incremental backups, encryption, compression, data deduplication
Seriously, why the down vote?

This project appears to match Duplicacy feature for feature.

I'm just asking a question, not trying to make a criticism.

If we raised income taxes to 90% for the highest "earners," then the government could more equitably distribute these funds to a wider range of equally deserving universities.

Neither Harvard nor MIT represent "the very crust of talent" either.

DEI initiatives and legacy applicants make up a significant fraction of their admissions.

hackrnusr··on Future ships could be powered by wind to fight climate change
Not really.
hackrnusr··on SVB Took the Wrong Risks
And America does a lot of things that Russia and China don't do apparently:

hackrnusr··on Stability is expensive. SVB preferred taxpayers pay for it
I'd rather the stability come from prison sentences instead.
hackrnusr··on How did Americans come to trust markets more than government?
Some of them worked in government.
hackrnusr··on Stability is expensive. SVB preferred taxpayers pay for it
Oh yes they did ... the fees that banks collect from depositors are used to fund the FDIC insurance fund.

Since everyone needs a bank account in this country, taxpayers are taking the hit on this one pure and simple.

hackrnusr··on SVB Took the Wrong Risks
Fees that banks collect from depositors fund the FDIC ... so like I said, taxpayers are going to take the hit on this one.

Countries like Russia and China would execute the leadership at SVB that allowed this disaster to happen.

In this country, they'll all get another cushy job from their friends in the industry where they can take even more risks with taxpayer money ... hopefully with a much better outcome next time!

hackrnusr··on MIT 24-Hour Challenge
Donate your money to a more worthy cause ... MIT's endowment is already at $25 billion.
hackrnusr··on SVB Took the Wrong Risks
So let's make taxpayers pay for it!
hackrnusr··on China’s Censors Are Afraid of What Chatbots Might Say

hackrnusr··on How do you contribute to climate change? We made a tool to estimate your impact
Don't waste your time.

The huge uncertainty around all climate change predictions makes them not worth spending much time thinking about.

hackrnusr··on Kopia – incremental backups, encryption, compression, data deduplication
Is this a rip-off of Duplicacy?

Feature sets are almost identical to each other.

hackrnusr··on Ask HN: Would you say $100k is the new threshold of middle class in 2023?
Have no idea ... I'm more interested in my health than money.
hackrnusr··on How do you take efficient notes?
... but looks aesthetically unpleasant.
hackrnusr··on Too Connected to Fail
Silicon Valley Bank?
hackrnusr··on Urgent: Sign the petition now
Recently cancelled cartoonist Scott Adams once compared women asking for equal pay to children asking for candy.

I think comparing the depositors in Silicon Valley Bank to these children would have made a better analogy.

hackrnusr··on “Hell Is Coming”: How Ackman Predicted the Covid Market Crash–and Made a Fortune
Nice puff piece for Bill Ackman by Vanity Fair.

Wonder how much he paid for it?

Article conveniently forgot to mention that his wife once accepted $100,000 from Jeffrey Epstein on behalf of the Media Lab at MIT as a form of reputation laundering for the convicted pedophile in the months leading up to his second arrest on federal racketeering charges in 2019.

Wonder how much Bill paid for that innocent little omission?

hackrnusr··on Ask HN: What email client do you use, and do you love it?
How well does your setup work with HTML mail?

I sometimes need to respond to an HTML mail by editing its contents. The Gmail web interface allows me to do that easily.

Until I can figure out how to do edit an HTML message in emacs, I'm stuck using the browser as my email client.

hackrnusr··on Ask HN: Best path to Emacs for lifelong vi guy?

Mickey Peterson's Mastering Emacs is also quite good.

hackrnusr··on There is no IQ threshold effect, also not for income
The paper makes a good argument for introducing universal basic income and more aggressively implementing DEI measures.

Assuming you believe any of it :)
