hackits··on Some terrible personal news
belittle dismiss (someone or something) as unimportant.

Recommending some-one go and seek help or signs or warning signs of underlying dependency that isn't healthy for a strong mature relationship is not belittling someone. Instead its is concern and recommendation to seek help is caring about some-one I have no social relationship to. If I didn't care I wouldn't say anything.

hackits··on Some terrible personal news
A personal attack is to insult some-one or to be-little them. It is a recommendation of some very worrisome warning signs of the post.

hackits··on Why is it hard to make friends over 30? (2012)
Have you thought about joining a gym? Are you actively seeking out friendships or befriending people in there 20's? Have you tried connecting with people in there 40's, 50's?

Personally I think that the world `friend` have been de-valued to the point used interchangeably with acquaintance. Also the modern social `self help` book's that mostly recommend venting people from ones life that are too needy or selfish and to surround yourself with only positive people who only want you to succeed have accumulated in a situation where people to people contact is very limtted and when it is its normally criticized and scrutinized for its merit.

The other end of the stick that I do like waggling is why do you think you need a friend? Are you soo focused on `friend` that you're not looking after yourself first? Maybe you're focused on friend because it takes the spotlight off yourself as the arbiter of your own life? Hell you may have not been successful because you didn't have a friend!

Focus on yourself, put boundaries around your life. Get a good night sleep, and focus on being better than you used to be yesterday. Expand your social/business circles and Friends will follow in a healthy productive way.

I agree it's incredible but (shurg) it's what is. Granted like I said before on the top above/bellow the only real choice Women can make is to Marry or Partner who can financially support them and there children during the first five years. Then once the children go to kinder-garden, school they re-enter the work-force on a part-time basis.

Though I don't have the numbers with me but here in Australia Asian families out-source the raring of infant's and children to the grand-parents. Although talk to any Western family (especially baby boomers) they want nothing to do with raising grand-children.

Supply/Demand, also consideration when government get involved it's like doing brain surgery with a base ball bat (its going to get messy)

To my understanding talking to the ladies at the child-care center's. The center is required to not exceed x number of children per day/per hour. They can only hire people with the clearance to supervise children after getting their Certificate 3 in child care. Then the staff need to under-go skills/training on their time to improve working with children.

Then you have insurance for the workers, building and also the necessary security and fire drills to be conducted regularly and kept up-to-date.

You have over-time pay, inclusive of when parents are late to pick up the children from day care.

Choosing a female partner (depending if you live in the west) is one of the biggest financial decisions a man will make that can have ramification on your stress/emotion/and success in the future.

Don't take this the wrong way when I read you're in your mid 30's I basically cheered! Go out and meet new people and experience life that you have some money/experience under your belt.

Personally if I had time to rewind the clock, I wouldn't of got Married (here in the west). The legal system, law is blantly sexiest against men it's beyond a joke. Seeing from first hand account of this myself.

hackits··on Fertility rates decrease as rents increase
It is cheaper for us to down-size to a 2 bedroom unit and have one partner working full time than it is to pay for day care for the little one. Even with all the reduced childcare here in Australia the difference at the end of the week comes to $20.

Granted I'm all-ways amazed that in the West on one hand the news proclaim and medical professionals to have children when the women are in there 20's. Although the support and service's such as cheap day-care and family centered activities are completely lacking to support that mind-set.

The message most young people receive is `It is healthy to have children when you're younger`. The reality is `Yes you can, but I hope you like living in a studio apartment counting your monies well all your colleges/friends are having fun`.

That and in today modern world having a child in your 20's is more or less considered social suicide.

The only to maintain a life-style and support structure for young women would be to find a partner who can support them and their child well at the same time maintaining their quality of life. Something such partners are very small so there is a lot of competition for this type of partner.

I saw your post but didn't reply.

The work you did probably is great and do I think its above your average developer. Somewhere in the the top 10%. Though how you conducted yourself in the face of management was down right petty/folly.

Yes you did the best job in the world. You improved the performance of the serves by % and it did make management of those server's easier. Though you need to think about what you've done in the eyes of management.

Firstly you've modified the server's without permission. You've run tests out-side of work hours that could of impacted the business bottom line. For all I know (its up for debate) but your senior managers had more pressing issues on the table, and having a young code money running around outside office hours is the LAST thing they want to hear.

`It's not a simple as you may think it is.`

Some of the things that come to mind, and honestly I would of pulled you into a office to explain yourself if you're on my team.

1) Did you document all the changes you've made to the server

2) Did you back-up or store any sensitive information off-site during out of office hours

3) Did you modify critical system files that could cause another dependent system to fail

4) What ETA/Service level agreements if any did you break when bringing down the server for maintenance?

5) Did we lose any Security Certification with you modifying the server or changing any of the certificates on the server?

We're software developer, and yes when we see problem's we want to fix it to our best of our ability. Though when you're in a Business there are many thing you may not be aware of. In this situation I would honestly say you're lucky to keep your job! I hope you take it into consideration next time you want to go out-side of your duties.

I don't want to come down harsh on you, but there are times when you see a bad situation and there is nothing you can do about it. You notify the people who're higher than you of the situation and the dangers. It's then up to them to make the decision. After they've made the decision that is it. If the server blows up during the weekend, and they want you to come in and fix it (even when its there fuckup) you just take your hourly rate and x10. So if your hourly rate is $50hr and the server blows up, then your new rate is going to be $500 per hour to come in during the weekend to fix the mess.

You're 100% right but also 100% wrong.

Like I said before you're viewing it from the perspective of a developer but not from the perspective of a Business person.

Instead of saying `Users cannot sing up if everything is broken` you need to see it from a Business perspective, and communicate it to them in the language they understand.

For example, `From our quarterly earnings report we need to have 10,0000 new clients signed up by the end of the month to reach the goal. We have on average 2,000 sign-ups per day. On the 2nd, 3rd of last month two of the critical system's fell over, and this result in a estimated 4,000 failed client acquisitions. The estimate from our quarterly earnings each new customer bring's in a revenue of $300 net profit from each client for the quarter. As a result of the system crash our quarterly earnings will be down 1.2 Million.`

Your job is to communicate clearly in the language they understand how it will achieve their goals. You're not the only department/manager who is requiring resources from the Business. As I stated before you're there to serve the business to achieve their goals.

hackits··on Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads
I think you've nailed it on the head but haven't realized why you've nailed it on the head.

`Why? These things have real consequences.`

To a business they see software/engineers as a expense. The whole focus as a business is to provide a service that people are will to pay more than it costs to provide said service.

Everything else doesn't matter, what does matter for a business is $$$$$ and making sure business doesn't get sued because bill touched jill with his #####.

For what my words are worth, I do think you need to take a step back and view it from a Business person perspective and attempt to align your goals with theirs. Get out of your cube and go and meet CEO's and CIO and talk to them about their problems and what their goals are. Then see if you two can work together to achieve their goals and bring value to the table.

Even writing this I've could think of 10 or 20 different business discussions you could have.

hackits··on ObjectiveSync – A thin Java object persistence layer for JDBC (2015)
I really don't see this as a major problem. Just have the ability with your compiler to load a external syntax tree for the specific database sql dialect. Then have the ability in the syntax tree to define types that map directly to a type within the language.

Easiest approach would just be to resolve the syntax tree to a constant string that is then sent to the database. I don't know why for the vast majority of programming languages they lack a lot of language features that programmer do day in day out eg... text manipulation, xml parsing, json parsing all of which are pretty straight forward and time consuming in languages without multi-line string literals.

We've had bad experiences mixing Office 32bit vs 64bit applications. Also with Microsoft Windows Server 2000 just double check the license agreement and software licenses some of them have caveats of running the software within a Virtual Machine.

I know Oracle licenses we had to have a dedicated machine because they charge per core/thread.

hackits··on ObjectiveSync – A thin Java object persistence layer for JDBC (2015)
When you have a cache, and even a resultset you're going to get discrepancies between your program state and the database state. If you need to maintain one side over the other that is where locking the records come into play.

I find it a bit disappointing in the Java world owned currently by Oracle why the they haven't added extensions to the language so I can write bloody SQL statement and PL/SQL procedures naively in the language!

hackits··on Learn just enough Linux to get things done
Those books where widely published from the start from Microsoft and Developers. There was aspects of the API were not released to the general public but it didn't stop a developer from knowing about them.

You also has the MSDN subscription that did cover a lot about the development.

hackits··on Learn just enough Linux to get things done
I tend to fall into I use what-ever gets the job done. Though most of the times I did hear from high Microsoft Programmers they first started with Unix/Linux and super productive in that environment. Though when it came to shipping product and getting customers to buy it all the users where on Microsoft/Apple at the time. Tending to wanting to survive and buy `nice` things they all had to learn Microsoft/Visual Studio to ship product to make monies.

Not wanting to fall into a debate about Microsoft/Linux/Apple I've tended to find that Microsoft with all its problems do have very helpful and useful technical support when you run into a major door stop when shipping a product. What they do for backwards compatibility is amazing and still something I would like in the Linux world.

Here I go again....

One of my pet peves with Linux/Unix world is `Still` after all these years their asynchronous IO is still crap compared to Free BSD. Something that after all these years its still amazing that it still isn't fixed. The whole container/virtual machine is required in the Linux world because `Some` essential tool you need is no longer works with your specific version of Linux. To make matters worse I've seen 2-3 virtual machines in enterprise environments that are just simply there to run old software that it vital for the business.

I was taught the same, though I never liked the concept of elevation, water, ect... It easier for me to quantify it when it relates to the real world such as newton force or doing work. The other reason I never really liked the concept of elevation it means nothing if you dont have gravity that is constantly acting on a object.
hackits··on Concise Electronics for Geeks (2010)
One thing that took me a long time to `get` was the concept of voltage is a bit miss-leading if you look up the definition even in the video of (http://afrotechmods.com/tutorials/2016/10/03/basic-electrici...).

Everyone wants to talk about the penitential energy and what-not. Though that is mostly pointless unless you grasp the first fundamental concept of voltage. Voltage is just simply the effort exerted by electromagnetic field on neighboring electrons.

As soon as you grasp that all definition of voltage relate to the real world of doing `work` eg... heating, moving then the concept of voltage of amps is a lot easier to understand.
