hackerboos··on Ask HN: What's it like being a “digital nomad”?
I can't imagine many people are 'nomadic' as the amount of hassle with moving location every few months would likely eat into productivity. Time zones are also a large factor as you might end up sleeping during the day and working at night (Bangkok has a 11-hour time difference with EST).

What a lot of people are doing is simply taking advantage of the visa free status a western passport provides to remotely work in a low-cost location. Usually Central or South America or South East Asia.

I honestly think that a more worthwhile pursuit is become a remote worker in a cheaper area of your own country or a country you can easily locate legally.

For example contracting for London-based companies whilst living in rural NI or North East England.

hackerboos··on How I got my dream job in the tech industry without a CS degree
The Open University in the UK has a dropout rate of 87% [1] I'd imagine that's even higher for online courses.

I can only speak for myself but I would not have been self-disciplined enough to complete the courses that I did during my undergraduate CS degree.

The added bonus was the degree allowed me to emigrate fairly easily.

hackerboos··on Why I’m throwing out React and going back to Angular 1.x
The only project I've found to be more stable than create-react-app is Ember.

Please elaborate.

hackerboos··on Why I’m throwing out React and going back to Angular 1.x
If you want to get started quickly then review the fact that you even require a SPA in the first place.

Other than that, you can get started pretty damn fast with create-react-app.

hackerboos··on Scotland to seek second independence referendum
Honestly Kezia is the bigger reliability. She was actually quoted as considering independence in the even of Brexit.

hackerboos··on Scotland to seek second independence referendum
You're right. Calling a second referendum is the best way to apply pressure on the UK government.

If the terms are unfavourable to Scotland, they will likely leave the union.

hackerboos··on Scotland to seek second independence referendum
They underestimated the No vote last time:

hackerboos··on Scotland to seek second independence referendum
Latest polls have Yes on 49%.

The First Minister needs a big swing in the polls to Yes somewhere in the 6X% to get this to pass.

hackerboos··on With ~$2M, where should I move to have impact and relax in life?
https://www.reddit.com/r/leanfire/ is another good subreddit for early retirees.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Fatigued by the complexity of ES6 tooling. What to do?
Which version of react-router are you using? V4 is very straightforward I thought.

hackerboos··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
Agreed. Come to Canada. We have a sane immigration system and we don't have right-wing parties breathing down our necks to shut it down.
hackerboos··on UnCSS: Remove unused styles from CSS
That would actually solve the use case above (hidden styles triggered by Javascript).

A large user base would give you decent coverage.

hackerboos··on Ask HN: Is the CS job market tightening?
Right now a lot of our quality devs are getting poached.

We rely mainly on interns coming back to join the company full time but recently we've had far more people leave than could be replaced by interns.

We're lucky in the sense that most of our interns are smart folks from solid institutions such as UoT, Waterloo etc.

I'm tempted to jump ship myself but I wanted to see out a project I'm working on first.

hackerboos··on ConvertKit: How Nathan Barry Bootstrapped an Email Marketing Business
Ironically that's covered in the book. Raise prices until a drop-off - although I always thought that rule was for B2B not B2C - consumers are far more picky over the price.

hackerboos··on Ask HN: Is the CS job market tightening?
Not in Toronto. We're having a hard time filling roles.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Best book to learn ReactJS?
I don't think React has a big enough API to warrant a book. That said grokking the concepts behind Redux does require a bit of assistance.

Dan Abramov's screencasts on EggHead.io do that: https://egghead.io/courses/getting-started-with-redux

But can't those cases just be dismissed also? Unless they decide that case is worth the release of information.

Shame the government of Ontario won't even consider the BC foreigner tax.
hackerboos··on Vacant Homes Are a Global Epidemic, and Paris Is Fighting It with a 60% Tax
It's not just capital controls. There is a lot of fraud in China that ends up being laundered in real estate here in Canada:

hackerboos··on Vacant Homes Are a Global Epidemic, and Paris Is Fighting It with a 60% Tax
I wonder what France's squatting laws are like. If a list of those homes were to be leaked then it could prove to be interesting.
hackerboos··on I spent three months working full time to get a job
We recently hired an ops guy into a dev role and the guy just does not know what he's doing. Merging his own pull requests before code review or before tests have passed the build system. Downs development/staging servers because he's "testing something" and forgets to bring them back up.

Our place has a 12-month contract before being made perm. Once you are perm you are not getting let go unless it's part of larger cutbacks (government). He was made perm before 12 months and I was astounded. They didn't even ask me what I thought before they did it.

hackerboos··on Show HN: Store.js v2.0 – Cross-browser storage for all use cases
I'm aware of that. I'm saying if that your use case is simply to write to localstorage then a wrapper library is unnecessary.
