habnds··on We Need to Map the Ocean Floor
A quick summary:

Only 6% of the ocean floor has been mapped. People at the Seabed 2030 project plan to map the ocean floor in high res by 2030.

Reasons to do this include navigation safety, ability to lay fiber optic wire and pipelines, because we don't know what's there, weather forecasts since water/temperature flows along ocean floor contours affect atmospheric flows, tsunami predictions, we could find sea wrecks.

habnds··on Gitlab considers not hiring SREs and Support Engineers in China and Russia
I don't understand how these things somehow result in there being no difference between the US and China. Of course it's an imperfect system.

Try handing out flyers about civil rights in Washington DC and then try it in Beijing.

Of course it's easy to criticize the electoral college but look at the results of direct democracy recently, Brexit, the initial rejection of the FARC peace agreement in Columbia. There's a reason representative democracy is prefered to direct, it's just difficult to get a balance. Odds are that the Electoral College will be gone in my lifetime.

Is the authoritarian Chinese system better? Of course not.

habnds··on In Praise of the 5-Hour Workday and Other ‘Radical’ Ideas
I had a similar schedule studying. It works really well to focus productivity in the morning. In particular I found that It was very difficult to focus after lunch for a few hours. I stopped fighting this and embraced that it was a good time to exercise, socialize or get random stuff done that didn't involve focus.

If necessary I could work for a few more hours between 4 and 10.

habnds··on DNA database that found Golden State Killer is potential national security leak
An interesting example of technology and the tech that defeats it evolving together, a friend with leukemia who received a bone marrow transplant was told that a DNA test using a blood sample would identify him as a woman, the person who donated the marrow.
habnds··on L.A. temporarily suspends Uber’s permit to rent out electric scooters and bikes
Fair point, I think there's a fundamental difference between the data collection done by a company like Uber or the FANG or whatever and the data that other companies collect in the normal course of business but it's hard for me to think of a good definition for the difference.

There's also the idea that maybe we should have total access to a currently unthinkable amount of data [0]

a free press and free elections make it not so much of a wash
habnds··on L.A. temporarily suspends Uber’s permit to rent out electric scooters and bikes
Seems like if Uber is going to use this data for their benefit society should be able to use it to ours as well for planning an infrastructure purposes for example.

The way that society does stuff like this is through government bodies. The real problem here seems like a lack of trust or oversight of government bodies, which creates the impossible situation you identify.

habnds··on Gaggle monitors the work and communications of almost 5M students in the US
Hard not to compare this to surveillance in mainland China.

> Among the many banned words and phrases on Gaggle’s list are "suicide," "kill myself," "want to die," "hurt me,” "drunk," and "heroin."

Children growing up in this sort of environment will come to expect it from their government.

I wonder if they have any data at all that shows they can actually prevent catastrophes with this sort of system or if this is just a placebo with dangerous social side effects?

habnds··on My company sold for $100M and I got zilch – how can that be?
in a perfect world options would (literally) be a bonus. In the real world people are playing stock market with their careers.

habnds··on California Can Expect Blackouts for a Decade, Says PG&E CEO
I'm asking what he or you think the coalition that makes up the left is. Is it just a more derisive term for dems? Is it a subset of dems with specific policies? I'm asking for a definition of the term he and you are using. Not your critique of a group that I don't understand the definition of.
habnds··on California Can Expect Blackouts for a Decade, Says PG&E CEO
So it sounds like "leftist" is just a term you use for any democratic policy, not a subset? Like it's not just Sander's dems, its California which is not all that extreme (yet?)
habnds··on California Can Expect Blackouts for a Decade, Says PG&E CEO
That is what I think, but in usage, for instance here, the person is identifying Cali as a bastion of leftist policies and I don't think Cali is particularly far left.

Harris, Feinstein and Pelosi are all pretty center, until 2011 they had a Republican governo,r and these tech companies and their values are decidely not liberal.

Further, Cali is home to some very conservative politics, Devin Nunes is way out there as is Kevin McCarthy.

The idea of leftist doesn't seem consistent with the usage.

habnds··on California Can Expect Blackouts for a Decade, Says PG&E CEO
I had some speculation about what the term is so flexible originally that I removed in the interest of actually hearing what people think :)
habnds··on California Can Expect Blackouts for a Decade, Says PG&E CEO
I'm consistently confused by what people mean when they say "leftist".

sounds like spiritual bypass. Maintaining a state of mind isn't the same as changing the relationship one has with daily experience.

habnds··on Collision course: why are cars killing more and more pedestrians?
Do you have any data showing that pedestrian right of way at designated crossings raises collision rates? You sot of sound like someone who is just upset they have to yield to a pedestrian.
habnds··on Collision course: why are cars killing more and more pedestrians?
It might be fair, but it doesn't work. Environmental changes are better than legislation at changing driver behavior.

More and more it seems that there isn't really a "safe" way to operate a car. It's really about how much risk society is willing to accept.

Aggressively holding drivers accountable for their mistakes might be necessary and an improvement but it wouldn't be sufficient to make streets safe for other users.

habnds··on Collision course: why are cars killing more and more pedestrians?
It's also silly to think that that difference is consistent with distracted driving causing the accidents. Are people more likely to be using their phone in these neighborhoods?

More likely it's that pedestrian traffic is much higher in poorer neighborhoods so the combined effect of distraction, environmental factors, car specs, and other things is much higher.

habnds··on Collision course: why are cars killing more and more pedestrians?
Two relevant quotes from the article:

> And more Americans than ever are zipping around in SUVs and pickup trucks, which, thanks to their height, weight and shape are between two and three times more likely to kill people they hit

> “All this talk about pedestrian distraction, driver distraction? It’s such a distraction,” says Ben Welle of the World Resource Institute for Sustainable Cities. “It puts all the responsibility on individuals, and none on the environment they operate in.”

habnds··on Federal Judge Upholds Harvard's Race-Conscious Admissions Process
My parents were really supportive of me in school; someone whose parents weren't as supportive of them, who got the same grades as me is probably a better student and will be more sucessful with a given set of resources than I would since they overcame more adversity than I did.

It's a little crude to use race maybe, but it probably isn't a terrible approximation. What would be great is if people had to disclose any paid preparation for the SAT or the hours their parents spent with them growing up but that's probably a long way off.

Overall, this issue is framed to be as controversial as possible by political interests but it really isn't that big a deal.

habnds··on Federal Judge Upholds Harvard's Race-Conscious Admissions Process
No but it might be possible that an African american with the same grades as an asian american is much more likely to be successful in the future because they got the same results from what is likely a much more difficult starting point. The context of someone's acheivements matters and race is part of that context.

habnds··on America has two economies, and they’re diverging fast
so a few things you're missing.

First, the location and timing of accounting profits is not the same as economic profits and the return on capital.

Second, what do you think the point of single payer negotiation with healthcare providers is? The NHS in britian negotiates prices on behalf of the entire country. This system in the US would massively move producer surplus over to consumer surplus by reducing prices through negotiating power.

Lastly, healthcare outcomes in the US are terrible and prices are astronomical compared to Europe, do you think it's a coincidence that their systems are centralized while ours is distributed? The US system massively favors capital returns over service cost and quality.

habnds··on America has two economies, and they’re diverging fast
language like that just means someone is arguing, not reasoning
