h43k3r··on The likely end of DownThemAll
This works pretty well if you are behind a HTTP Proxy and the proxy is limiting speed per connection. This was a common scenario in my university.
h43k3r··on Things I would build if I worked at GitHub
Exactly my thoughts.

After exploring Visual Studio Online (its free for 5 users), I am still not able to digest why there isn't a build and deploy system in GitHub.

There were great demos at Microsoft's BUILD15 for Automated Build and Release Management which demonstrates these features.

h43k3r··on Millions of Facebook users have no idea they’re using the internet
Facebook should also invest something in teaching these people "What is Internet?" and shouldn't limit the people to Facebook when they talk about Internet.org

Just investing in Internet.org with FB ads in mind is not at all good for the community. We go to internet for utilities not for seeing ads.

h43k3r··on Ask HN: Alternatives to HN less web-focused and more technical/professional?
This looks interesting. Can anyone send me an invite

More about me. http://blog.harshillodhi.co.in/about-me/

h43k3r··on What was the technology stack driving the original Ultima Online servers?
I started scripting when I was 14 to increase the number of scraps and testimonials in my Orkut scrapbook.

Creating phishing pages so that I can brag about hacking my friend's account was the other motive.

I think that MIT's scratch is a very good platform for children to learn about programming.

h43k3r··on Uber Bonds Term Sheet Reveals $470M in Operating Losses
In India, Ixigo has launched a app which shows cabs from all the various cab providers including Uber,Ola,TaxiForSure and others.
h43k3r··on Safari is the new IE
Any idea how does it achieve that?
h43k3r··on With 61 Seconds in a Minute, Markets Brace for Trouble
If 1 second can cause so much of havoc, I am wondering, to what precision are the servers in markets synchronized?

Are they made in a distributed fashion where it is assumed that two clocks can never be synchronized with full precision.

PS - I am a noob in markets and trading.

h43k3r··on Young, Vegetarian, Non-Smoking Indians Are Struggling With Heart Disease
I am an Indian and my thoughts resonates with all the points that you have mentioned.

One point that I would like to focus is that the role of a healthy diet and exercise.

The medical treatment in India is pretty cheap if you compare it with US. A single trip to a good doctor won't cost you more than $10 + $10 (for medicines). Because of this most of the people are not at all bothered about their health when they are young and keep on eating high carb diets.

There is no role of exercise in the current culture in which the younger generation of India is living which is the sad part.

3 days ago, India celebrated the International Yoga Day. I hope people will follow it into their daily lives.

h43k3r··on LastPass Security Notice
One another incident that reminds me, why 2 factor authentication is absolutely necessary for important information.
h43k3r··on UBlock Origin
I support your arguments of free content, but there are some sites on the internet that will serve you spam if you don't use a ad blocking software.

I unblock ads on the free websites that I use frequently which present ads in a nice way.

Some websites do show a popup that they earn from ads and it would be great if you could turn off your ad blocker and I mostly comply with that. The reason for this is that these sites know when and where to show ads.

h43k3r··on An update about the new Chrome bookmarks manager
I asked this question ( Why no Edge for Win 7) to one of the developers concerned with Edge development during BUILD Tour.

He told me that Edge is built on the Universal Windows Apps Platform which is going to be launched with Win 10. So because of its dependency, it won't be possible for edge to run on Win 7. The good thing about this is that MS is using the same platform that they will give to developers, to build Edge.

So people shouldn't hope that at some point Edge will come to Linux or Max OSX.

h43k3r··on “An ISP in Asia is leaking routes to a Tier 1 transit provider”
I am very much interested in learning about such issues. Any links or blogs that put light on such issues.
h43k3r··on Show HN: Income Tax Calculator
Great for just calculating the amount of tax that one needs to pay without going into the process of login and setting up a user account. +1 for the great interface.

Cleartax.in (YC funded) provides a much more comprehensive solution of filing taxes and returns. Although their UI needs a serious upgrade as per today's standards.

Yesterday only, I have used Cleartax.in to file my Income Tax Return. Their service is simple to use and they do appropriate checks to make sure that your filing is consistent.

PS - Not affiliated to Cleartax.

h43k3r··on How truly great entrepreneurs manage their time – A Founder's Notebook
One thing that I have noticed is that these people know what they want to learn and they only learn that.

General people try to learn as many things as possible.

h43k3r··on Looking Forward: Support for Secure Shell
Yesterday only I was talking with my friend about "Would Microsoft will ever support ssh?" and voila its done.

I am a linux guy who did his intern in Microsoft. That was the first time I appreciated Powershell and from then I am in love with it. Its object oriented nature makes thing easy, fluid, understandable. I can never run linux command line with Google but with Powershell, its possible with the way it manages help pages.

h43k3r··on PyPy 2.6.0 released
I have been benefitted a lot by PyPy.

I made a search engine[1] in python for one of my university course project. It had to process 30+ GB of html files.

I got a 2x improvement by using PyPy and completed indexing the dataset in 11 hours as compared to projected 22 hours. The only explanation I can think of is that my work was compute intensive and involved a lot of loops and accessing data in dictionaries.

h43k3r··on Ask HN: Are there any examples of profitable Google Chrome extensions?
I have dumped Adblock Plus in favour of uBlock. Its low on memory and I don't think it does something like this.
h43k3r··on Beej's Guide to Network Programming
The positive side of such repetitive posts is that sometime there are some newcomers which will get to know about these amazing resources, which will be helpful to them in many different ways.
h43k3r··on The File System Paradox (2007)
Its always fun to understand how such basic things are done when you don't have an OS loaded.

A very good article on how does your computer boot up.

h43k3r··on India’s Snapdeal Says the Country Doesn’t Have the Programmers It Needs
I agree with you on 1 and 2 but not on 3. Snapdeal is one of the very good e commerce platform here in India. The problem is that Indian students are still not ready to join a company like snapdeal or flipkart when they have offers from FB, Google, Microsoft, Amamzon, Visa etc.

During campus placements at my college, none of the CS and Maths and Computing went to snapdeal. Instead snapdeal has to settle themselves with guys from other departments.

h43k3r··on Beej's Guide to Network Programming
This is the one of the must haves when anyone is doing network programming. I used it heavily during my college projects.

h43k3r··on Hacking Starbucks to get unlimited coffee
Recently only, a guy hacked Ola Cabs Wallet ( A competitor to Uber in India) by exploiting their REST API [1].

A similar post on race condition of Facebook, Digital Ocean was discussed here in HN [2]

h43k3r··on Introducing Preemptible VMs
Now I am waiting to see a similar thing in Azure.

Preemptible VMs will prove to be very useful in fault tolerant Distributed Networks.

One more usecase that I can think off is Load Testing on a large scale ( in a distributed way ).

h43k3r··on Microsoft Announces Azure Stack
Can anybody explain me in layman terms what this means?

I understand that Azure is Microsoft's Cloud Platform that provides services through which you can deploy your application on cloud.

Does this mean that you can run Azure on your own datacenter like Microsoft is doing currently?

h43k3r··on Ask HN: Does anyone have an old computer laying around unused in Brisbane, AU?
Great to see such good gestures from the community. I have 2 laptops which are not working(one with motherboard problem). Is their any way I can dump them as they are just taking up space in my home.

PS - I am from India.

h43k3r··on How to take advantage of Redis just adding it to your stack (2011)
I know many of you will be well aware of how one can use redis. This is targeted for the people like me (and many others) who have just entered into this field.
h43k3r··on Show HN: A tool that transforms your whole list with just one example
One can achieve the same in sublime text using the multiple cursors and edit feature. This is great for non tech people.

For those of you who are wondering what sublime text can do, do give a visit to a sublime text video series on tutsplus, its awesome and teaches you the power of sublime text

h43k3r··on Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition – With Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
How much memory is sufficient these days. I mean with all the development work, I can max out my 8 gigs of ram.

I understand that it would be difficult to fit 16 gigs or 12 gigs of ram in an 13in laptop.
