h0ek··on Onionspector – now let's see what The Onion knows about you
I did prompt it. Let's Encrypt still doesn't issue .onion certificates :) Onion Services already provide end-to-end encryption and service authentication anyway. Tor currently lists DigiCert and HARICA for publicly trusted onion certs. I actually use a HARICA certificate on the onion mirror of this very blog, so I promise HTTPS on onions has crossed my mind before.
h0ek··on AI is not your biggest cyber threat. Your shitty patching process is
A slightly sarcastic take on AI hype, CISOs, security theatre, broken processes, legacy IT, SOC reality and why automation changes the speed of attacks more than the nature of the problem.

Great job. Looks awesome.
h0ek··on AI adoption and Solow's productivity paradox
Yeah, maybe the CEO doesn’t see any impact on productivity — but mine definitely changed. I actually have more time for my own stuff now, because AI quietly handles part of the work for me. Of course, if productivity is measured by how many PowerPoint slides get presented to the board, then sure — nothing changed. Especially when HR reports say “everything looks the same” — because no one is tracking how much work is silently being offloaded to AI. And just to avoid overworking myself, I even asked AI to write this comment so I could focus on something else in the meantime.

h0ek··on I was asked to leave an event for female founders because I had my baby with me
Congratulations on fully understanding the situation. There are a lot of such failed provocations unfortunately. Like the short movie in Poland with the lady on the bus who showed a piece of footage in which the bus driver asks her out of the vehicle, and it was an article along the lines of ‘he asked me out of the bus because I was with my child’, while the entire surveillance footage of the bus reveals that the driver asked the mother to fasten her pram with a seatbelt in a suitable place. She refused and the driver asked her out because she did not comply with his instructions and rules related to transport. People who have children completely fail to understand or do not want to understand people who have made a conscious decision not to have them.

Thanks for this comment, your commentary is uplifting.

h0ek··on I connected Windows XP to the Internet; it was fine
It is still possible to use an Amiga and connect it to the Internet. It is still possible to use VHS tapes and watch films on them. I am not sure why you would want to do this. Maybe your computer is fine now, but if you are targeted by an attacker, you make it easier, or if someone steals your laptop, I guess there is no encryption by default. Better to use Linux on old machines. And in 2024 we have great emulators or virtual machines for more than 10 years to make old games work fine. Cool that you made it work, but I have no idea why. Maybe for fun, or testing, but for everyday use, nah, thx.
h0ek··on Leaf blowers are a scourge. Why is it hard to get rid of them?
In Poland, the town where I live, the problem is even funnier. They use these blowers to push the leaves from the pavements and streets onto the lawns every day at 8 a.m. and nobody collects the leaves. When the guy finishes his work, the wind blows the leaves back onto the pavements and streets. When we reported this to the council, no one saw a problem and the cleaner was happy because he had work every day. The leaves are only collected once before winter, when there are no leaves on the trees.

h0ek··on Anonymous Tor Phone
Yeah I know. This is really scarry, but it still works pretty well and each month you can hear news about some scams for money on auction or local offers portals similar to Ebay, where people pay for something, never get products and money are lost as action was done over the weekend money went to the fake account registered for some homeless guy, who register account and sold access to some cyber criminals. For example they sold 12 Iphone 14 for very cheap price, and before it was reported to the police and bank company to block accounts, money was not there already. They track money, and its already exchanged for crypto or took from ATM by another poor guy (recorded by bank cameras), who was hired just to withdraw money for percent of amount he withdraw. Sic stories but works.

Funny is how much is this SF for you. In country where I live these people are called "słup". Literally "pole". In english it would be something related to "bogus company". People who for money, drugs or alcohol do stuff for you. Like buy and register sim card. Provide you their identity details with ID. For 200 USD they can even go to the bank and create account providing all details to you. You even can register fake companies on these people if you get them flat, clean clothes and something to drink every week :) It is so many scams in central and east Europe, that for me funny and SF is that if you do not understand something or you didn't see it, it's a fake in your opinion.

Thanks all for great comments. I am glad that this silly article made such a lot of bad and good ideas. So many anger and so funny stuff. And most important so many great suggestions and points to discuss that I didn't address. Please remember that this is just an article and not a recipe for being totally anonymous, and that each person can accept, or not some risk. I showed my way. Which is not best, but works for me. I am not a genius or person who tells you how you should act or do stuff. But I was judged by many. Its funny how things in the internet works and how quickly people says opinions, good and bad and even shitty. And sometimes how seriously take everything :) it's always big wave of good feedback mixed with hate when some of my article get on main page of hacker news :) I will review all comments and update article in next two weeks with all good ideas. Thank you all. Even people who wish me death by burning at the stake. Lol.
h0ek··on Anonymous Tor Phone
Hahah, awesome idea. In the past I wanted to stick phones to the trees in the random forest and made my own onion mobile phone network. But cars are better because moving all the time.

h0ek··on Short story about my Steam Deck
For many years I didn't use any ADS on that blog. From some time I am using Google ADS and I don't make millions, however, the profits from these ads, although small, cover server maintenance costs and pay off the time spent on writing. I was convinced that everyone uses blockers and only bots make me profitable ;) If there are more negative comments about the ads, I will opt out of them.
h0ek··on Short story about my Steam Deck
Thanks for the feedback. Yes Google Ads are implemented :( On PC you can avoid it by installing uBlock Origin plugin and on the mobile phone you can setup private DNS from AdGuard or NextDNS. I was using both and for me AdGuard is great solution. You don't need to install any aps in Android or iPhone there is a field in settings called Private DNS/DNS. Google ADS cover my server maintenance. Maybe in the future I will remove ads from the website. I tried to arrange them so that they were not too intrusive, but this is Google and squeezes them everywhere :)

Hello Joe_Boogz,

Blog is using Hexo (https://hexo.io/) and a little modified Cactus theme (https://probberechts.github.io/hexo-theme-cactus/). If some of the websites looks interesting to you and you would like how they are built you can use Wappalyzer (https://www.wappalyzer.com/)

h0ek··on Windows Defender is enough, if you harden it
TBH in one company we worked on Windows laptops. I was rebooting my laptop on every Friday and my friend once a month. His everyday task took much longer and laptop was slower, after reboot both was fast and fresh. That small dumb experiment made me sure windows machines needed a regular restart. Same with Android phones. When I set scheduled phone reboot on every Saturday evening it started to work without any issues. (https://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-000462382710-ibx95g-t500x500....) :D
