gyre007··on Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton [pdf]
This reminded me of my Hopfield networks implementation in Go [1]. The algorithm is rather simple but fascinating nevertheless and works surprisingly well for reconstructing noisy images. I actually blogged about it as well [2]. But as many are discussing here Deep Memory networks based on Boltzmann networks are more powerful yet they don't seem to have found much use case either

gyre007··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
I devour Borges' books. I thik my most favourite is Fictions but the library of babel was pretty good, too.
gyre007··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
I finally read it recently (few months back or so) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of the many takeaways for me was how similar the SW world is to the HW one when it comes to actual human being behind engineering -- I guess I shouldn't be surprised but for some reason, the book reinforced that notion in my head. I'm sure I will read it again at some point.
gyre007··on When Dark Mode for YN?
I used to be a big user of dark mode on every site that hd it available. Nowadays I just turn it off. I find it incredibly annoying and I’ve also realised that my eyes don’t hurt as much as I’ve read abou they should. I suppose YMMV
gyre007··on YC criticized for backing AI startup that simply cloned another AI startup
I have been surprised recently how many competing companies YC have founded recently. I know VCs do this all the time but I still find it a bit strange - not sure how I would’ve felt if the same fund backed my competitor. That said, YC have always said that they were backing founders not ideas so …
gyre007··on YC criticized for backing AI startup that simply cloned another AI startup
I don’t thinks its the worst, but it did feel in bad taste. YC have put money and trust in them, so why would they kick them down? Would you? They haven’t committed any crime so why would they distance themselves (Note: I am not a YC founder or affiliated with YC in any way)
gyre007··on AI chipmaker Cerebras files for IPO
I don’t know enough to say they’ll fail or be successful but I am wondering who will underwrite this IPO — they must have balls of steal and confidence gallore
gyre007··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Would love if you could make it for Zed.
gyre007··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
This is wonderful, though I wouldnt want to move to Berlin I find this really useful to learn about Germany. I also find it funny because it epitomises how broken the EU is. It should not be this hard to move within the EU, alas, here we are. Thank you for putting this together for the folks that need it!
gyre007··on Rewriting Rust
One of the things that hit me when I was picking up Rust was that I felt like it had every imaginable feature one could think of - I dont know if Rust team said no to anything (yes I know they obviously must’ve done) - and yet people wanted more and more (some justifiably, others less so) as the language “felt” incomplete or that the features thatd be used by 2% of devs are totally necessary in the language that is “understood” by 1% of developer populace. I’m not saying the author is wrong here, just pointing out how a complex language somehow needs to be even more complicated. Spoiler: it doesn’t. Zig is simpler, arguably faster, with much less drama in the community. I wish more funding went to Zig.
gyre007··on System Intiative is generally available
I would be fine with discovering the existing resources actually, if SI can do that. The reason I mentioned Terraform is because my infrastructure is fully managed by it so I thought that would be the easiest path, but if SI can automagically discover all the resources that’d work just fune for us. Thanks, need to give it (SI) a go!
gyre007··on System Intiative is generally available
This is a very bold take on Infra management which has become a real PITA even at small orgs - Cloud really did a number on us.

One thing I'm personally wondering about is whether I can import my Terraform state file - because that'd be a pretty good starting point for many orgs.

Regardless, I'm curious how this pans out. Though we've had a few different iterations of IaC in the past decade or so, the infra crowd has been known for being sceptical when it comes to adopting new things than your usual software engineer, especially something that is more like a step change than a gradual evolution.

Very happy someone's taking on this task with a very fresh approach.

gyre007··on Show HN: Time Flies
I love this! I wouldn't be surprised if this is the result of the author getting nerd-sniped somehow :-)
gyre007··on Stephen Fry – AI: A Means to an End or a Means to Our End?
You don't have to agree with [all of] Stephen Fry's opinions in this piece to say this is extraordinary writing.
gyre007··on Why Oxide Chose Illumos
I never said it was a post by Oxide.
gyre007··on Why Oxide Chose Illumos
Yeah I came here to say that Bryan worked at Sun so why do they even need to write this post (yes, I appreciate the techinical reasons, just wanted to highlight the fact via a subtle dig :-))
gyre007··on Serverless-registry: A Docker registry backed by Workers and R2
OCI is demonstrably broken as a specification body as demonstrated by the referrers API. Distirbution spec as it is at the moment is just a very poorly written technical doc.
gyre007··on Serverless-registry: A Docker registry backed by Workers and R2
Cost of storage and egress cost are wildly more expensive on ECR compared to CF+R2
gyre007··on Show HN: Trayce – Network tab for Docker containers
Looks very cool. I think you should write a docker extension https://www.docker.com/products/extensions/
gyre007··on Ted Chiang has won the PEN/Faulkner Foundation's short story prize
I loved Stories of Your Life and Others. It had some really great stories. Exhaltation on the other I found mediocre. Stories are either elaborate or very tiresome.
gyre007··on A Joint Statement from UniSuper and Google Cloud CEO, Thomas Kurian
This is as comical as it would get by Google Cloud. “Unprecedented” event, only it’s happened so many times that at this point stories like these can’t surprise anyone.
gyre007··on New black hole visualization takes viewers beyond the brink
Honestly, this is one of the best things I’ve watch this year
gyre007··on Embedding models
Nice! I've been waiting for this. I've added support for it to my little Go module [1] which has minimum deps and now provides API clients for 5 embeddings providers

gyre007··on Sholto Douglas and Trenton Bricken – How to Build and Understand GPT-7's Mind
I wholeheartedly agree with this. He comes well-prepared and you can sense his curiosity about the topics he discusses with his guests. This particular episode was very insightful as always!
gyre007··on On UniFi Captive Portals
> What you notice when you start digging into these third-party tools is that they all ask you for admin access to your UniFi Console (which also needs to be publicly accessible)

I've never owned Unifi, but wow, this is pretty bonkers!

gyre007··on Show HN: Podcast RSS Generator
Nice, I have been looking for something like this.
gyre007··on Mitchell reflects as he departs HashiCorp
Incredible run! Thanks for all the tools you’ve given us. But more importantly all the relentless passion for automation has been very inspiring! Chapeau, sir! All the best in whats next for you.
gyre007··on Spain lives in flats: why we have built our cities vertically
I want to second this. Living in flats sounds cute for most of the people who never lived in ones that are being built with cheap materials and thin walls. It's all nice and dandy until a sill neighbour moves in and then you've got nowhere to hide.
gyre007··on Lima: A nice way to run Linux VMs on Mac
Big fan of OrbStack here, too.
gyre007··on Understanding classifier-free guidance for style transfer
It's pretty wild how much value Automatic1111 webuid enabled to create.
